Overview
Interns in this eight week* program participate in research under the guidance of a senior ETS staff member in any of these areas:
•measurement theory
•validity
•natural language processing and computational linguistics
•cognitive psychology
•learning theory
•linguistics
•speech recognition and processing
•teaching and classroom research
•statistics
•international large scale assessments
Interns also participate in seminars and workshops on a variety of topics. Each intern is required to give a presentation about their project at the conclusion of the internship.
Program Goals
•Provide research opportunities to individuals enrolled in a doctoral program in the fields described above.
•Increase the number of scholars and students from diverse backgrounds — especially traditionally underrepresented groups such as African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and American Indians — conducting research in educational measurement and related fields.

Award
$5,000 stipend*
Up to $1,000 round-trip travel reimbursement from the intern's university to Princeton $1,500 housing allowance for interns residing outside a 50-mile radius of ETS facilities*
*Some of the projects in the area of natural language processing require a 12-week internship.
The descriptions for these projects will specify 12 weeks. Award duration for 12-week internships is June 1, 2010 – August 20, 2010. The award stipend is $7,500, and the housing allowance is $2,250.
Eligibility
Current full-time enrollment in a doctoral program in any of the areas specified above. Completion of at least 2 years of coursework toward the PhD or EdD prior to the program start date.
Selection
The main criteria for selection will be scholarship and the match of applicant interests and experience with participating ETS researchers and projects. For specific descriptions of internship projects, review the application.
ETS affirmative action goals will be considered. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered

On the application form:
Choose up to two research areas and provide written statements about your interest in the particular area of research.
Attach a copy of your curriculum vita (preferably as a PDF)
Attach a copy of your graduate transcripts*
Provide the names and e-mail addresses of two individuals who are familiar with your work and who agree to complete a recommendation form. ETS will send the form to them via e-mail.
*You will need to have your official graduate academic transcripts sent by your institution directly to ETS at the address below. You will also need to attach an unofficial copy to the application form.
Letters of Recommendation
On the application form, please provide the names and e-mail addresses of two individuals who are familiar with your work and who agree to complete a recommendation form. ETS will send the form to them via e-mail. The individual supplying the recommendation will have 10 days to return the form to ETS. For this reason, it is very important that you get prior approval from each individual to use their name and e-mail address and to inform them of the return requirements.
