Overview
David L. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. students to become more proficient in the cultures and languages of world regions critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships provide American undergraduate and graduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation.
As students of other cultures and languages, Boren Scholars and Fellows significantly advance their international competencies that are needed to communicate more effectively across borders, to understand other perspectives, and to analyze economic and political affairs.
In exchange for this funding, students must commit to seek work in the federal government for a specified period of time. After spending at least one year in a government position with relevance to national security, some choose to remain in the federal arena while others use their newly acquired skills as global professionals in the business, medical or engineering fields as well as countless others.
Boren Scholarships
Boren Scholarships allow U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests but underrepresented in study abroad.
Eligibility
Any U.S. citizen enrolled as an undergraduate in an accredited U.S. institution may apply. Boren Scholars must complete their programs before graduation.
Study Abroad Program
Most applicants participate in pre-arranged study abroad programs administered by a U.S. institution, a consortium of U.S. institutions, an overseas institution, or a third-party provider. Students should work with their study abroad offices or Boren campus representatives to identify the best study abroad opportunities.
Length of Study
Boren Scholarships are available for full academic year or semester programs. To promote cultural and linguistic immersion, longer periods are recommended and preference will be given to applicants studying abroad for at least six months. Special In itiative for Science an d Technology Students Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors may also apply for summer programs of eight weeks or longer.
Scholarship Benefits
Maximum scholarship awards are:
❖ $10,000 for a semester
❖ $20,000 for a full academic year
Boren Fellowships
Boren Fellowships encourage U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their education, and can include language study, research, and academic internships.
Eligibility
Any U.S. citizen enrolled, or applying to enroll, as a degree-seeking graduate student in an accredited U.S. institution may apply. Boren Fellows must complete their program before graduation.
Program Design
Most applicants design their own programs, in consultation with their academic advisers. Successful programs have included language study, research at the master’s, pre-dissertation, or dissertation level, academic internships, and any combination of the above. Funding for domestic language study is available for candidates who demonstrate that such funding is critical to their overseas plans and that no other means exist for them to obtain such training.
Program Length
The length of Boren Fellowships is determined by the project the candidate designs, but may be no shorter than one academic term, no longer than 12 months overseas, and no longer than 24 months for combined overseas and domestic study.
To promote cultural and linguistic immersion, we encourage significant time abroad, but recognize that in many disciplines, including science and technology, as well as in the professional schools, summer study may provide the best option.
Fellowship Benefits
Maximum fellowship awards are:

❖ $24,000 for a full academic year
❖ Domestic-only funding is limited to $12,000 and the maximum for domestic and overseas study may not exceed $30,000
