Fulbright New Zealand Senior Scholar Awards

Overview

Fulbright New Zealand Senior Scholar Awards are for academics, artists or professionals with distinction to lecture and/or conduct research in the US.

Eligibility

A small number of awards are granted each year for New Zealand scholars to lecture and and/or conduct research at an American institution for three to five months each year.

Full awards are granted to applicants without any additional financial assistance during the award. Partial awards are granted to applicants receiving financial assistance, usually in the form of paid sabbaticals from their home institution.

Preference may be given to applicants for partial awards. These awards are not intended for the main purpose of studying for American degrees, completing doctoral dissertations or attending conferences.

To be eligible, you must:

- show professional distinction, leadership potential and the ability to be a cultural ambassador for New Zealand
- have a PhD or the equivalent professional or artistic training or experience
- not have held another Fulbright award in the past two years, and otherwise comply with the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board's policy on Previous Fulbright Grants
- meet the citizenship requirements for this award:


Citizenship requirements

- You are eligible to apply for this award if you:
- are a New Zealand citizen
AND are not a permanent resident or citizen of the US
AND are not currently living in the US*

* Applicants outside New Zealand who are unable to attend an interview in person may be disadvantaged.

Preference for Fulbright awards is given to candidates who have not had extensive recent experience in the US.

Fulbright awards will not be granted for medical programmes which include any clinical activities involving direct patient care.

Entitlement

- US$3,250 per month for partial awards or US $6,500 per month for full awards for 3-5 months
- international travel of US$2,000 for grantee and US$2,000 for one dependent
- basic health and accident insurance cover up to a maximum of US$100,000
the opportunity to participate in various programmes and activities available to Fulbright scholars in the US

Application process

- Complete the application form below and send it to us by the deadline
- Attach a curriculum vitae and three letters of reference
- Interviews will be held in Wellington in July. You must provide a full medical certificate if selected for interview
- You will be advised of the outcome of your application within eight weeks
