Iceland: PhD Fellowship in Systems Biology of Inborn-Errors of Metabolism, University of Iceland

Overview

The Center for Systems Biology, University of Iceland (www.systemsbiology.is, CSB UoI), is looking to recruit a highly motivated PhD student in Bioinformatics/Systems Biology. The research at the CSB UoI focuses on 1) human metabolism and 2) industrial biotechnology. The Center is an interdisciplinary center with the Schools of Medicine, Engineering and Natural Sciences participating.

Metabolic network reconstructions play a key role in Systems Biology as they provide a framework for investigation of the mechanism underlying the genotype-phenotype relationship. Inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) are individually rare but collectively numerous. Newborn screening programs worldwide allow early detection of amino acid and fatty acid disorders with a low false positive rate. The successful candidate will develop modeling methods to predict normal and abnormal biofluid metabolite concentrations, using a published human metabolic reconstruction. Comparison of predicted concentrations with newborn metabolomic screens, obtained in collaboration with University Hospital, will help to identify infants with known and novel IEMs. The computational model will be used to increase the diagnostic capacity of newborn screens and will be used to predict therapeutic interventions, including nutritional regimes and candidate drug targets. The overall aim is to improve the quality of life for individuals with IEMs.

Job description

- Development of computational methods to integrate metabolomic measurements with human metabolic model.
- Computational modeling of abnormal human metabolism for various IEMs.
- Development of a comprehensive knowledge of inborn error metabolism.

Our Offer

- Working in a scientifically stimulating, innovative, dynamic, well- equipped, and international surrounding.
- In-depth training in cutting edge technologies used in systems biology.
- Numerous training opportunities in (molecular) biology, systems biology and bioinformatics.

The position is available immediately. Please send a cover letter, a brief description of research experience and interests, a curriculum vitae and contact information for three references in pdf file format to Ines Thiele, PhD (systemsbiology@hi.is).

All applications will be answered and applicants will be informed about the appointment when a decision has been made. Salary for the positions will be according to collective wage and salary agreement.
