UK: PhD Opportunities at University of Cambridge - Doctoral Training Centre in High Performance Structural Metallics

Overview

This new DTC has been set up in collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc and the Universities of Swansea and Birmingham. This builds on the longstanding University Technology Partnership (UTP) researching into materials for gas turbines applications.

• Up to 7 fully funded places to study for a PhD available in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge
• Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering required (depending upon research topic)
• Four years funding
• £13,290 plus up to £5,000 pa additional funding available
• Fully funded for UK residents - Fees for EU residents
• Working with Rolls-Royce plc on Materials for Gas Turbines applications
• Excellent track record of recruitment into the Company
• Integrated training courses taught at all three Universities
• For more information on the projects and how to apply see http://www.msm.cam.ac.uk/

PhD opportunities available for Oct 2010

Elastic and anelastic behaviour of high performance alloys

(supervisor: Dr Richard Harrison)

Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy (RUS) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) allow exceptional insight to be obtained into the elastic and anelastic properties of materials. The observed acoustic spectra can be interpreted to provide detailed information on both the bulk material behaviour as well as microstuctural changes.

In this project these techniques will be applied to characterise the temperature dependence of the elastic and anelastic properties of a series of high performance nickel-base and titanium-base alloys and determine the effect of microstructural parameters including phase transitions, precipitation, grain size and processing texture on the material response.

How to apply

For more information on the projects and how to apply see http://www.msm.cam.ac.uk/
