Overview
The University of Northampton invites applications for a PhD studentship, to undertake research into transition from primary to secondary education for pupils with special educational needs in English schools under the supervision of Professor Richard Rose.
The successful applicant will be based in The Centre for Education and Research, an approved research centre based within the School of Education at The University of Northampton.
Value of this studentship
£12,500 per annum (with an additional £5000 research expenses budget spread over three years) and tuition fees for 3 years, starting September 2010
The research project will focus upon support systems developed by schools, the roles of individuals in providing support and the efficacy of these in a range of school provisions. Data will be collected to investigate a wide range of perspectives on transition, including those of parents, professionals and the pupils themselves. This project will run parallel to Project IRIS (Inclusive Research in Irish Schools) a three year longitudinal study which is jointly managed by the Centre for Education and Research in partnership with Trinity College Dublin and the Institute for Child Education and Psychology Europe. The successful candidate will support the work of Project IRIS and will have access to shared data and instruments.
A commitment to working in partnership with schools, young people and families throughout the research will be essential, as well as a demonstrable commitment to children and young people with special educational needs.
Eligible Candidates
Applicants should possess a good Honours or Masters Degree in an education or relevant subject area and have experience working in a school. As part of the duties will involve visiting colleagues in Ireland, freedom to travel overseas is also essential.
