The U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem is pleased to announce the Academic Year 2011 competition for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program. The Fulbright FLTA program is an integral part of the Fulbright student program. The nine month, non-degree program will host around 125 Arabic FLTAs from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, the Palestinian Territories, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
The FLTA program, funded by the State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), is aimed at strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities, and some high schools, while providing future foreign teachers of English with the opportunity to refine their skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of U.S. society and culture. FLTA fellows spend nine months during the academic year serving as teaching assistants at U.S. educational institutions while also taking courses in English teaching and American Studies as non-degree students. FLTAs also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities and community outreach projects. FLTA fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the program. FLTA Fellows are required to return to their home countries upon completion of the nine-month program; FLTA candidates from the following disciplines are considered: 1) American Studies; 2) Journalism and Media, and; 3) American or English Literature. Candidates must be teachers or teachers in training in these fields and will be required to explain how their experience as an FLTA will share back to their students, peers, family, and friends. All other FLTA eligibility rules apply to these candidates as well.
FLTA fellows may teach up to two language classes and are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester, one of which must be in American studies. The remaining coursework must relate to their careers in English language teaching. FLTA fellows will also be expected to facilitate cultural events, language clubs and language tables.
FLTA fellows will be required to attend a regional orientation arranged by ECA during the summer of 2011 before arriving in the United States in August. FLTA fellows will also be required to attend a mid-year enrichment workshop that will be hosted by ECA in the United States to share and discuss foreign language best practices and their current teaching experiences with other FLTA fellows.
Eligible applications:
• Applicants must be citizens, nationals or permanent residents qualified to hold a valid passport issued by the country from which applicant is applying; No American passport or Green card holders are eligible.
• Applicants must be residing in their home countries throughout the nomination and selection process;
• Applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English, and at minimum must possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree by June 1, 2011 to allow time to submit an official transcript prior to the start of the FLTA Program;
• Satisfactory TOEFL or IELTS scores should be obtained from candidates prior to inviting them for the interview stage, if possible.
• Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 550 (paper based TOEFL); 213 (computer based TOEFL – CBT); 79-80 (internet based TOEFL – IBT) or 6.0 (overall score international English language testing system – IELTS);
• Applicants must demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity, and professionalism;
• The FLTA program does not support dependents or family members.
• Applicants must be at least 21 years old and no more than 29 years old at the time of application;
