Germany: Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in Applied Mathematics, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg

Overview

This is a 36-month position at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg to do a PhD in "Modeling, Analysis, and Optimization for Dynamic Electrowetting". The position is funded by the Initial Training Network FIRST ("Fronts and Interfaces in Science and Technology") of EU.

Program Description

Electrowetting is the generic term for a number of effects which allow to manipulate tiny amounts of liquid (drop transport, splitting and coalescence) by applying electric fields without the need of any tear-and-wear elements such as valves, pumps etc. It is the aim of this project - supervised by Günther Grün - to derive and to analyze new models for electrowetting, taking in particular different mass densities of the involved fluids into account. The cases of charged droplets and of electrolyte solutions surrounded by non-conductive fluids shall both be addressed.

In the framework of appropriate quasi-stationary model versions, optimal control of droplet motion may be studied as well. The successful applicant shall
- take part in the research and training activities of the Applied Mathematics Group at Erlangen related to FIRST,
- meet regularly with his/her PhD advisor,
- prepare publications of his/her findings and present them in seminars and at conferences,
- participate at the joint training activities (summer schools, specialized courses etc.) organized by the network FIRST.

He/she will also have the opportunity to undertake a secondment of various months to the University of Madrid (Complutense). There, he/she will continue his/her doctoral project under the direction of Marco
Fontelos who is a close collaborator of Günther Grün in the mathematics of electrowetting.
For more details, please contact Günther Grün (email: gruen@am.uni-erlangen.de).

Benefits

Salary and mobility allowance are at the standard rate for Early Stage Researchers in ITN networks of EU. This means a living allowance of ca. 34.500 € per year and a mobility allowance of 500 € (or 800 € under family obligations) per month. In addition, there is an annual personal travel allowance dependent on the distance from the country of origin, and ESRs employed for at least 12 months are entitled to a single 2000 Euro Career Exploratory Allowance payment. Substantial funding is provided for participation in conferences and other research and training activities.
