The Centre for HumanIT at Karlstad University (provided the requisite decisions are made) invites applications for

Ph.D. candidate position in "ICT4D", i.e. Information and Communication Technology for Development

A Ph.D. candidate position is available at the Centre for HumanIT within one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Information Systems, or Media & Communication.

The HumanIT centre focuses on two main areas of human aspects on ICT: the role of IT in international development and privacy and surveillance in the digital age. The vacant position concerns the first area.

Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the requirements for general and special eligibility. The general eligibility requirement is the following, a master's degree of at least 240 ECTS credits of which at least 60 ECTS cr are studies at master's level, or if a person in some other way in the country or abroad has acquired largely equivalent knowledge.

Desirable knowledge or experience:

- for an applicant with a background in Computer Science it is desirable with a focus on communication technology which improves attractiveness and access to remote or developing areas (such as Mesh Networks, Long Distance Wireless, Sensor Networks);
- for an applicant with a background in Information Systems is a focus on mobile support for information processing desirable;
- for an applicant with a background in Media & Communication is a focus telecommunication policies and/or the social uses of new ICT desirable.

Admission:

On the basis of individual assessment of the candidates' abilities to successfully pass the research education. The earliest date for filling the position is the 15th August 2010. The position is limited to 5 years corresponding to 4 years of full time research studies; for the remaining 20% the PhD student should also take on other research, teaching, or administrative tasks besides his/her PhD research.
