UK: 4 year PhD at King's College London - Medical Education

Overview

Project title: Interprofessional Learning in Clinical Simulation (CS): Exploring, understanding and justifying the process
King's College London - Medical Education
Supervisors: Dr Elaine Gill, Dr Peter Jaye, Dr Gabriel Reedy
Funded by King's College London School of Medicine

Stipend: £15,740

Clinical Simulation (CS) is developing a central role in medical education and is has an increasing role in meeting patient-safety needs. Justifications for this methodology are as yet not entirely clear. Important issues regarding learning processes, nature of learning and cultural interactions between various professionals in these settings are of interest to clinicians and educationalists internationally. The study will add rich and original perspectives on the CS debate.

Research question aims to explore:

•Mechanisms and processes of learning in a range of CS settings.
Addition to current understanding of how CS effects changes in skill, cognitive ability and clinical practice.

•CS in medical education as an ongoing cyclical process, rather than a solely linear one.
•Long-term impact of continued interaction and learning in interprofessional groups of students and faculty.
•CS as part of a pedagogically progressive trend of encouraging active participation in learning.
•Educational theory and practice to provide a foundation for design, implementation and evaluation processes.
•The notion of a 'clinical culture'
•The role of clinical simulation in meeting patient-safety needs
•Development of interprofession assessments - OSCEs.

Results of the study will:

•Strengthen pedagogical grounding in CS in medical curricula.
•Contribute to the professional development of medical educators.
•Create a transferable framework for clinical education across professions.
•Provide an accredited pathway for a potential Medical Educator.

The proposed supervisors bring a mix of expertise. Dr Reedy - experience in education; Dr Gill - experience in clinical communication and KHP/IPE Lead; and Dr Peter Jaye, KHP Simulation Lead will ensure a supportive contribution to the student experience.

The proposed studentship will fit within the current emerging strand of research into the nature of and effectiveness of CS in clinical educational settings in KHP. Together with the proposed Fellowships in Medical Education and linked research being conducted across KHP, the studentship will contribute to the development of a centre of research focused on providing in depth understanding of the range of perspectives that impact on CS in differing educational contexts and settings.
