UK: PhD Studentship at University of Reading - School of Systems Engineering

Overview

Smart Energy at Home: Managing Domestic Energy with Novel Analysis Methods and Efficient Power Electronics.

In order for the UK to meet its energy-use targets and legal obligations, UK domestic energy consumption must be reduced by 7-10% within 10 years. Furthermore, the Energy and Green Economy Bill, as announced in the Queen's speech in May, will promote enhanced energy efficiency, including the roll-out of smart meters. The country is committed to reducing energy use, and using energy more efficiently, and one key approach to meeting this goal is the deployment of the smart grid.

The aim of this PhD research is to investigate ways to monitor and manage energy use in a domestic or small-scale environment such as a home or commercial property in order both minimise that energy use and the demand on the grid; this environment would consist of energy generation and storage as well as loads. The PhD research would involve data analysis and modelling as well as the design and development of novel power electronics hardware. In addition to pure research, the PhD work would also have a strong emphasis on delivering methods and solutions that could be implemented in real applications to aid the deployment of the future smart grid.

Eligible candidates

Requirements: Bachelors or Masters Degree that includes Power Electronics as a major subject, with previous experience of the design, simulation and testing of electronics circuits. Knowledge of modelling and optimisation techniques is highly desirable.

Benefits

The studentship provides a maintenance allowance of £12,500 per year including tuition fees and expenses. Full funding is restricted ONLY to candidates from the United Kingdom or European Union member of states.
