UK: Glasgow Caledonian University - PhD Research Studentship at School of Engineering and Computing

Overview

Opportunity for a PhD Studentship in: Involving users in their own rehabilitation through the capture of real-time wireless data.

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD research Studentship within the School of Engineering and Computing. The studentship is for a period of three years, subject to satisfactory progress and provides payment of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate plus an annual stipend of £14,275*. The successful candidate is expected to undertake up to 6 hours of academic support activity per week.

*please note that only students from the EU/UK or who have the residency status can be considered (due to funding restrictions).

Project Description

The ability to move and perform the physical tasks of normal daily activity is a crucial factor for a healthy and fulfilling life. Across the lifespan illnesses and ageing factors affecting the musculoskeletal or neurological systems of the body can reduce one’s capacity to live an independent life. The problem addressed in this PhD is specifically aimed at the development of a low-cost, real-time motion-capture system. The approach taken will be to use sourceless sensors to establish the orientation of the human anatomical segments, from which posture is then determined. Orientation is obtained by combining this information using an algebraic format that can be directly applied to find the posture of the patient.

The main objectives of the PhD are:

1.To investigate the movement data and technical complexities that will be required for the capture of human anatomical segments.

2.To provide the means via different devices (e.g. wireless sensors, games consoles, PC, Java enabled digital television boxes etc) for the patient to visualise their body movements during exercise. Wireless technology must be used to connect the sensors to a body area network.

3.To provide a simple skeleton model that will present a coarse representation of the patient. A kinematical approach will be used in the first instance to manipulate the skeleton. At this stage feedback of individual movement performance can be provided infrequently, sufficient to allow the plotting of progress.

4.The final step is for this PhD student to work alongside a multimodal PhD student in order to develop therapeutic applications. The multimodal student needs frequent, individual data to be recorded with inexpensive movement assessment equipment recording key parameters either iii) ‘off-line’ in the home or iv) ‘on-line’ in the clinic or hospital.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a good honours degree (minimum 2.1) or Masters in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, who will have good analytical and programming skills and a strong interest in some or all of the following: wireless technologies for pervasive systems, healthcare wireless systems, and multimodal Interaction. Solid programming skills in C++/Matlab/ J2ME/Java are highly desirable. For informal enquiries and further details of this project please contact the group by email at: mmig@gcal.ac.uk (Dr Lynne Baillie).
