Overview

Each year, the Radcliffe Institute welcomes a group of fellows from around the world—women and men, scientists, artists, historians, sociologists, economists, and literary scholars—who form a multidisciplinary community. Animated by important questions in fields ranging from genomics, to human rights, to poetics, to mathematics, the Institute is a place of intense intellectual engagement and great energy. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue their scholarly or artistic projects within a community that challenges them to think and to communicate in transformative ways.

Within its broad mandate to include all academic fields and the creative arts in its research and programs, the Institute sustains a special commitment to the study of women, gender, and society.

Cluster Applicants for the 2013–2014 Fellowship Year

The deadline to apply as a cluster is May 1, 2012.

As a fellowship cluster you would spend the year pursuing your cluster's research interests or project. The Institute encourages the inclusion of junior faculty. You can take a look at previous fellowship clusters here.

All members of the cluster (excluding creative artists) must have been awarded their doctorates by December, 2011. Only scholars who have published at least two articles in journals or edited collections or one refereed journal are eligible to apply. Please note specific eligibility requirements here.

In order to gain consideration to apply jointly, the convener(s) of such a group should submit:

• a letter of intent (one to three pages) describing the group’s focus and aims
• a list of participants
• a copy of each participant's curriculum vitae

Selection Process

Former fellows of the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program (1999 to present) are not eligible to apply.

Each application is reviewed in a dual-tiered process by peers in relevant disciplines. Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant's record of achievement and promise. Applicants are notified by e-mail of the results of the selection process in March.

Terms and Conditions

Stipends are funded up to $70,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow's home institution.

USA: Yale University Postdoctoral & Predoctoral Scholarships/Fellowships

Overview

Predoctoral Fellowships

International Security Studies at Yale (ISS) awards up to two Smith Richardson Predoctoral Fellowships each spring. These fellowships begin each September with a term of one academic year.

The Smith Richardson Predoctoral Fellowship is designed for advanced doctoral candidates from universities other than Yale. Awardees are given an opportunity to interact with the ISS community and take advantage of Yale’s unique academic resources. The fellowship targets students in the field of security studies, with an emphasis on international, diplomatic, or military history.

Fellows must be in residence in New Haven or its environs during their fellowship year. Eligible candidates will have completed the archival research for their doctoral dissertation, and winners will be expected to use the award to make substantial progress in writing their dissertation. Applications from non-U.S. citizens are welcome, but successful applicants bear final responsibility for all immigration-related issues.


The stipend is $24,000 per year, with an additional $3,000 in research expenses. ISS provides each fellow with shared office space and single membership in the Yale Health Plan if the fellow’s home institution does not provide transportable health coverage. Fellows will not be eligible for Yale financial aid or degrees, nor will they be allowed to take or teach classes.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Brady-Johnson Program in Grand Strategy, which operates under the auspices of International Security Studies, awards one or more Henry Chauncey Jr. '57 Postdoctoral Fellowships each spring. These fellowships begin each September with a term of one academic year. By mutual agreement of the fellow and ISS, the fellowship may be renewable for a second year.

These fellowships will provide opportunities for research and teaching in the field of “grand strategy” broadly defined. Fellows must be in residence at Yale, and must have successfully defended their doctoral dissertation before the appointment begins. The Program welcomes applications from both mid-career and junior scholars. Scholars who have previously held an ISS fellowship are eligible to apply.

Fellows will be expected to conduct their own research and to teach at least one course on a subject relevant to grand strategy during each year in which they hold the fellowship. The stipend will be at least $50,000. The fellowship will provide shared office space and access to Yale facilities as well as membership in the Yale Health Plan.

2012-2013 Hungarian Government Scholarships for International Students

Overview

2012-2013 Hungarian Government Scholarships (Scholarization): Hungary through the Balassi Institute, the Hungarian Scholarship Board Office offers scholarships for foreign students and lecturers in higher education institutions as well as research fellows who intend to gain further professional experience in Hungarian higher education institutions or research institutes. Scholarships can be applied for in two different ways:

Work plans and bilateral agreements

The Office of the Hungarian Scholarship Board (hereinafter HSB) welcomes applications by citizens of countries (and territories) that have a valid/effective educational work plan with Hungary, or a bilateral agreement signed by the Hungarian Ministry of National Recourses and the relevant ministry of the given country (or territory). Dissemination of all information regarding the application procedure and deadlines as well as assessment and shortlisting of applications is conducted by the scholarship authority or the Ministry of Education in the relevant home country (or territory). Applications forwarded by partner scholarship offices shall have a priority. However, applications submitted directly to the HSB Office shall also be accepted in the framework of the Pool system outlined below.


Scholarship Pool

In 2005 the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Hungary established the ‘Scholarship Pool’ allowing for applications for all HSB scholarship types from the following countries/territories:

Albania, Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Korean Republic, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Chile, Republic of the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States of America.


Citizens of the following countries may only apply through their national scholarship offices, on the basis of bilateral agreements:

Columbia, Yemen, Mongolia, Palestine and Vietnam.

Available scholarships

The following scholarships are available in the academic year 2012-2013:

A - semester/partial studies (3-10 months)

Available for: undergraduate (BA/BSc) and graduate (MA/MSc) students (enrolled at foreign higher education institutions), especially those majoring in Hungarian Language and Literature and students participating in a single degree track university programme (such as General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Studies, Veterinary Studies, Architecture, Studies in Law, etc.). Before application, students are required to have completed minimum two semesters at their home institutions. For ‘Type A’ scholarship students may apply only on one occasion during their Bachelor’s studies, and once during their Master’s studies.

Financial provisions

HUF 40 460 stipend per month, paid by the host institution*; student hostel accommodation in a university residence hall paid by the scholarshp-holder.

B - postgraduate studies, research (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

Available for: applicants holding a Master’s degree or an equivalent university degree, including PhD students who intend to do research for their dissertation and wish to stay in Hungary for less than 10 months. (However, PhD students cannot earn credits during the scholarship period at the host university.)

Financial provisions

HUF 79 200 stipend per month and HUF 70 000 accommodation allowance per month.
For scholarships lasting 21 days or less: accommodation allowance and a stipend of HUF 3 000/day.

C/1 - full PhD programme (36 months)

Only students proficient in Hungarian can apply. The scholarship is conditional upon successful entrance exam / admission to the respective doctoral school.

C/2 - partial PhD studies (10 months)

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme at an accredited higher education institution in their home country or in a foreign country (but not in Hungary).

Financial provisions

HUF 93 000 stipend per month paid by the host institution*; student hostel accommodation in a university residence hall paid by the scholarshp-holder.

D - postdoctoral studies, research (1-10 months)

Applicants must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree.

Financial provisions

HUF 118 800 stipend and HUF 80 000 accommodation allowance per month, paid by the Balassi Institute HSB Office.

E - research stay (3-21 days or 1-10 months)

Available for associate professors or high-ranking academics as well as researchers holding minimum a PhD or an equivalent degree.

HUF 118 800 stipend and HUF 80 000 accommodation allowance per month.
For scholarships lasting 21 days or less an accommodation allowance and a stipend of HUF 3 000/day will be granted. These amounts are paid by the Balassi Institute HSB Office.

F - summer courses in the summer of 2012 (2-4 weeks)

Only courses published in the list of ‘Summer Courses 2012’ on the HSB website can be selected. You may select three different courses but your scholarship will allow you to participate only in one course.

Tuition-free course, free accommodation and meals.

CASES OF NON-ELIGIBILITY

Foreign citizens with a residence/immigration permit or in the course of applying for such a permit in Hungary
Foreign citizens with permanent residence in Hungary
Foreign citizens employed on a permanent basis as defined by the Hungarian Labour Law

Students applying for programmes not financed by the Hungarian State
Students admitted to higher education host institutions where tuition fee is required.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

Scholarships offered by the HSB allow for studies or research in any field of arts or sciences at an accredited Hungarian higher education institution or research institute to be determined in advance.

Semester/partial and postgraduate studies as well as doctoral programmes must be carried out in higher education institutions or research institutes where no tuition fee is required.

For ’type A scholarship’ students may apply only on one occasion in the course of their Bachelor’s studies, and once during their Master’s studies. Type A (semester/partial studies) and type C1/C2 (full PhD and partial PhD studies) scholarships cannot be extended. Type B (postgraduate studies), D (postdoctoral studies, research), and E (research stay) scholarships may be extended exceptionally, only under special circumstances, on one occasion.

HSB scholarships are valid only for studies and research purposes in Hungary. Scholarship-holders must stay in Hungary during the entire period of their studies or research.

Scholarships are awarded for the summer of 2012 or the academic year 2012-2013 and must be completed by 30 June 2013 at the latest.

USA: Penn Predoctoral Fellowships for Excellence Through Diversity

Overview

The University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the first Predoctoral Fellowships for Excellence Through Diversity. This program is designed to provide mentorship and access to Penn’s resources for doctoral students in the humanities or social sciences, enrolled at universities other than Penn, as they complete their dissertations. It supports scholars from a wide range of backgrounds, who can contribute to the diversity of Penn and the higher education community. The Fellowships support graduate students in the final stages of dissertation research or writing for residency at Penn for an academic year, normally September through August. They offer an opportunity for scholars who plan on an academic career to take advantage of Penn programs and faculty expertise and to have access to libraries and the resources of the Philadelphia region. Each scholar will be hosted by a department or program and assigned a faculty mentor. Recipients can be in the stage of either dissertation research or writing.

The Fellowship provides a stipend of $27,000, health and dental insurance, office space, library privileges, and a $3,000 research and travel fund. The application deadline is April 15, 2012.

This year, three of these new Fellowships will be awarded. Candidates must:


• Be a US citizen or permanent resident.

• Be enrolled in a PhD program in the humanities or social sciences, at an institution other than Penn, have passed their PhD qualifying examinations, and have an approved dissertation proposal.

• Be a student of exceptional academic merit who belongs to a group underrepresented in higher education;  and/or comes from a socially, culturally, or educationally disadvantaged background or have faced other significant personal obstacles; and/or pursues academic research on cultural, societal, or educational problems as they affect disadvantaged segments of society.

Applications consist of:

• A personal statement describing the student’s work, dissertation, and any other information that the student would like to present to the selection committee. The statement should begin by addressing the importance of the student’s topic and approach and then explain the dissertation’s aims, methodologies (how the student will conduct the research), originality, and contribution to its field

• A dissertation abstract.

• Two letters of recommendation, one which must come from the dissertation advisor, commenting on the student’s performance, potential, and expected time to degree.  At least one of the letters must address the student’s contribution to diversity in higher education.  These can be sent separately by the recommenders. 

• Official graduate transcript(s).

• Current curriculum vitae.

USA: International Scholars Program

Overview

Each year the Society for the History of Technology designates up to four International Scholars for a two-year term. The International Scholars program is administered by the International Outreach Committee.

Background and Mission

In 1992 the Society for the History of Technology inaugurated the International Scholars program with these goals:

1. Foster a stronger international community for the study of the history of technology
2. Strengthen the society's role as an international society for the history of technology
3. Identify and help non-U.S. historians of technology participate in the meetings and governance of the Society
4. Provide formal recognition for the work of non-U.S. historians of technology so that their respective governments and national academic communities might provide greater support for their society-related activities
5. Afford special recognition for younger, non-U.S. scholars as they begin their careers in the history of technology
6. Foster an international network of scholars in the history of technology that will benefit all members of the society

Nowadays the mandate of the International Outreach Committee is slightly different. More attention is given to scholars from countries outside the U.S. and Western Europe, not only to foster their individual careers but also to support local networks and activities for and by scholars working on the history of technology. International
Scholars shall act as ambassadors for the Society in their countries and regions, both by informing the Society about the state and developments of the history of technology in their regions, and by helping to disseminate information about the Society and its activities.

Eligibility and Selection Process

To become a SHOT International Scholar, you must reside and work in underrepresented countries at the time of selection. Graduate students, post-docs, and visiting scholars who are living and working in the United States or Western Europe are not eligible to become International Scholars; however, they are eligible to apply once they return to their home countries. Of these potential candidates, anyone at any rank, from graduate student up through senior scholar, is eligible to become an International Scholar.

Individuals may be nominated as International Scholars by any member of the Society, and we also encourage self-nomination. To nominate yourself or someone else as an International Scholar, please send a letter and a brief curriculum vitae to EACH member of the International Outreach Committee and to SHOT secretary Bernie Carlson atshot@virginia.edu. Letters must include:

• why you would like to be an International Scholar,
• how you plan to advance the mission of the International Scholar program
• the current state of history of technology research in your home country and your home institution, and
• how your research will enrich existing knowledge in the field.

Each year in March a call will be send out to recruit new International Scholars. The deadline for nominations is set towards the end of April. In consultation with the President and Secretary, and in accordance with criteria established by the Executive Committee, SHOT’s International Outreach Committee shall be responsible for the selection of the International Scholars, with the selection to be approved by SHOT’s Executive Council. New candidates will be selected beginning of June.

Benefits and Support

International Scholars shall receive regular SHOT membership at no cost during their two-year term. At each annual meeting, SHOT will host a special gathering to welcome current International Scholars, introduce them to SHOT officers, and discuss with them SHOT’s international outreach and the international intellectual dimensions of our field.

International Scholars will participate in an email discussion list of all current International Scholars and the International Outreach Committee. Through the list International Scholars can seek support in writing paper abstracts for SHOT's annual meeting and other activities in their task as ambassadors for the Society.

Conditions

As a condition of appointment, SHOT requires International Scholars to submit at least one paper proposal for SHOT's annual meeting during their two-year term. While paper proposals from International Scholars will not automatically be accepted for the annual meeting, SHOT encourages the program committee to give these proposals special consideration.

SHOT also requires International Scholars to submit a travel grant application for each of the two SHOT annual meetings during the two years of their appointment. International Scholars receive highest priority for SHOT funding. Travel grant funds will help pay for travel expenses for International Scholars to attend the annual meeting and for basic conference registration, although not for lodging. To inform the SHOT community about the state and developments of the history of technology in their regions, progress in disseminating information about the Society and stimulating scholarly activities in the history of technology, International Scholars commit themselves to at least one publication in the SHOT Newsletter or on the SHOT web site.

Turkey: 2012 Fellowships for International Students

Overview

Travel and research grants in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technological Sciences, Medical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities (*) will be awarded to highly qualified PhD students and young post-doctoral researchers to perform part of their research in Turkey.

ELIGIBILITY

1. Be a foreign citizen, non-Turkish citizen (people who have dual citizenship are not eligible)
2. Be accepted by one of the universities or research institutes in Turkey
3. Certify that he/she has sufficient command of language in which the research will be pursued
4. For PhD students: To be enrolled in a PhD program abroad
5. For post-doctoral researchers: not to be over the age of 35 as of application year
6. PhD degree with GPA minimum 3.50/4.00 for post-doctoral researchers who got their PhD degrees from Turkish universities

DURATION OF AWARD

Maximum duration of this fellowship is 12 months.

VALUE OF AWARD

Maximum living allowance for this fellowship is 2.250 TL/month. If it is approved by TÜBİTAK - Department of Science Fellowships and Grant Programmes (BİDEB) Evaluation and Support Commission, travel costs and health insurance may be partially covered.

10. A brief report prepared by the host scientist in Turkey on the proposed research project(signed)

APPLICATION

Online applications must be made at: http://ebideb.tubitak.gov.tr  Online applications must be made until 6 p.m. on the application deadline since the system will be automatically closed at 6 p.m.

After the online application form is filled and the documents above are uploaded, the applicant must sign the printout of the form and send it to TUBITAK-BIDEB along with the documents above.

Applications not fulfilling cited conditions, lacking any of the required documents or those arriving after the deadline will not be processed.

DEADLINES

• 1st Term : 2 March 2012
• 2nd Term : 5 October 2012

THE START OF FELLOWSHIPS AND THEIR CONTINUATION

• Fellowships must be started within 1 year after the allocation. Otherwise, the fellowship will be cancelled.

• The fellows are monitored through study reports signed by the fellow and the coordinating scientist.

OBLIGATIONS

• Depending on the total duration of the grant, fellows should send a “development report” about their research every 4 months. Also, fellows must submit a “final report” at the end of the scholarship period. All reports must be signed by both the co-working scientist(s) and the fellow.

• If the development reports are delayed, the fellowship payments will be halted. If the fellow does not send development reports within 3 months from the date the payments are halted, fellowship may be cancelled by BIDEB’s Evaluation and Support Commission.

• The support received from TÜBİTAK must be clearly acknowledged in all publications concerning the study realised during the fellowship period. Copies of the publications (if any) concerning the work should also be sent to BIDEB.

• The fellow is obliged to notify BIDEB about any other financial support he/she gets from an institution other than TUBITAK within 15 days from the beginning of the support. If the fellow is supported financially by another institution, the amount of future payments is decided by BIDEB’s Evaluation and Support Commission and the fellow may have to pay back to BIDEB.

• If the fellow decides to leave before the end of the scholarship period, the fellow or his/her supervisor has to notify BIDEB 15 days prior to the departure. No payments will be made after the departure date. If any payments are made after the departure date, payback is required.

• Fellows have to pursue their studies full-time during the fellowship period. If the Fellow leaves Turkey during the fellowship period, he/she is obliged to inform TUBITAK about the dates and duration of his/her visits abroad. If the visit does not exceed two weeks in each six months of the fellowship period, full stipend is continued. Otherwise, stipend is halted during the period of absence.

If the fellow does not fulfill what caused to halt in 3 months, his/her fellowship is certainly halted by BIDEB’s Evaluation and Support Commission.

Malaysian Government (MIS) Scholarships for International Students

Overview

The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract the best brain from around the world to pursue advanced academic studies in Malaysia. This scholarship aims to support Malaysian Government's effort to attract, motivate and retain talented human capital from abroad.

Talented international students with excellent academic records and outstanding co-curricular backgrounds are welcomed to apply for this scholarship and further their studies in any selected and well-established Malaysian public and private universities. This scholarship is divided into two (2) categories of study: Postgraduate and Post-doctoral Studies


ELIGIBLITY CRITERIA

	To be eligible for Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS), applicants must fit the following criteria:-
	i.	Not be more than 45 years of age during application.
	ii.	Obtained a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a CGPA of 3.5/4.0 at Bachelor Degree Level for Masters Degree applicants and for PhD candidates must possess CGPA 3.5/4.0 or very good result at Masters degree level in a similar field of intended PhD study. In addition, for post-doctoral programme, the selection will be evaluated based on the number of books produced, refereed/non refereed journals, portfolio and patent copyright. The Post-Doctoral candidate must have excellent reputation in research and possesses knowledge related to the research to be carried out.
	iii.	Took one of the following English Language Proficiency Test not more than two years before the date of application. The list of tests and minimum scores required:
		-	IELTS Academic Test with a score of at least 6.5; or
		-	TOEFL paper-based test with a score of at least 580 or computer-based test with a score of at least230 or internet-based test with a score at least 92.
	iv.	In excellent health condition and certified by a Certified Doctor/Medical Professional. The cost of medical examination is to be borne by the applicants
	v.	Wrote a proposal that is relevant to the needs and interests of Malaysia (research-based programme only)
	vi.	Has applied for and gained admission to postgraduate and post-doctoral studies in Malaysia (conditional letters of offer will be accepted at the time of application or has a confirmation of acceptance or affiliation with the universities in Malaysia).

VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIPS

	Each scholarship consists of:-
	i.	Air tickets from recipient’s capital city to Malaysia
	ii.	An approved tuition fees
	iii.	Monthly maintenance allowance
	iv.	Annual grant for books and internal travel
	v.	Medical / Health Insurance
	vi.	Installation and Termination grant

	Field of studies are in the following priority areas:
	i.	Science and Engineering
	ii.	Agriculture and Fisheries
	iii.	Economics and Islamic Finance
	iv.	Information and Communication Technology
	v.	Biotechnology

	ix.	Health excluding nursing, medicine, clinical pharmacy
		* Applicants may choose any related course within the field/areas mentioned above

SELECTION CRITERIA

	Applications will be considered according to the following selection criteria:-
	i.	High-level academic achievement.
	ii.	The quality of the research proposal and it’s potential contribution towards advancement of technology and human well being.
	iii.	Excellent communication, writing and reading skills in English Language.

GENERAL CONDITION OF AWARD

	i.	Scholarship holder must undertake full-time studies for postgraduate and post-doctoral studies at a campus of Malaysian Universities.It is the responsibility of the scholarship holders to confirm admission to the university.
	ii.	Scholarship holders must not change their programme during tenure of the scholarship except with written permission from their university and the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia.
	iii.	Scholarship holders must follow the approved programmes and abide by the university’s rules, regulations and codes of conduct.
	iv.	Any suspension from the university will result in immediate suspension of award. Monthly allowances are not payable during suspension, including suspension due to illness.
	v.	It is the responsibility of successful candidates to apply for and meet the requirements for the issuing of an appropriate entry visa including medical examination. The offer of the scholarship does not guarantee the granting of a visa.
	vi.	Scholarship holders must maintain satisfactory progress and good standing as stipulated by their host university and degree programme, or the scholarship will be withdrawn.
	vii.	The scholarships are tenable in Malaysian universities and research must be carried out in Malaysia.
	viii.	Scholarship holders are not allowed to take any paid employment during their tenure unless with written approval from the host university.

	All applications should be made ONLINE through Ministry of Higher Education’s website athttps://payloan.mohe.gov.my/MIS/ starting from 16th January 2012 until 30th April 2012.
	STEP 1
	i.	REGISTER your Passport Number or National Identication Number, password and email address.
	ii.	LOGIN to online application form and fill in all section completely.
	iii.	Please ensure all informations are correct before you print the application and logout.
	STEP 2
	Please attach printed application form together with the following documents:
	a.	Recent passport size photograph.

	c.	A certified copy of current passport showing evidence of citizenship.
	d.	A certified copy of academic transcript, testimonials and/or references relating to the relevant study, co-curriculum activities, achievements.
	e.	A clear and precise study or research plan

	You are required to complete the two Letters of Recommendation from two referees, Endorsement Form and Medical Report. Please bring printed ONLINE application form and required documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the relevant agency responsible for the MIS scholarship in your country to get the endorsement.
	STEP 3

	ii.	You are required to attach the documents and click SUBMIT button to submit the application. You will see the notification message when the process is done. All the application is fully online.
