Overview
Study Abroad Advisors and Financial Aid Advisors play a crucial role in ensuring that students have successful and competitive applications for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. In addition to certifying applications, advisors counsel students throughout the application procedure as students choose their study abroad programs, determine financial need and finalize post study abroad options and projects.
Here, you will find resources on how to advise Gilman Scholarship applicants. As an advisor, you are fully supported by the Gilman Scholarship Program and we welcome you to become active participants by signing up for our newsletter, sharing best practices, attending workshops and serving on selection panels. For further information, please send an email to gilmanadvisors@iie.org.
How to Certify an Application
There are four components to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program Application:
- Online student section;
- Online study abroad advisor certification;
- Online financial aid advisor certification; and
Three paper copies of the student's transcript/s.
All four components must be completed in order for a student's application to be accepted. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered and extensions cannot be granted.
For deadline information please refer to the Fall or Spring and Summer timeline.
What are advisors asked to certify?
The financial aid advisor will verify that the student is currently receiving a Federal Pell Grant and the estimated amount of financial aid, in grants and scholarships that the student may apply to their study abroad program. The study abroad advisor will verify the study abroad program information provided by the student, and that the program they are applying to is an approved, undergraduate credit-eligible program at the student's home university.
Process for certifying applications:
Any study abroad or financial aid advisor that may be certifying students' applications must create an account in the online application at http://gilmanapplication.iie.org/. Once your account has been created and verified, students from your institution will be able to select your name from a drop-down list. For more information on creating an account, download Tips for Advisors using the online application (PDF).
All applicants are advised that prior to submitting their application they should contact both the financial and study abroad offices to confirm which advisors they should select in their application.
Once a student submits the online application, the financial aid and study abroad advisor listed by the student will automatically receive an email. The email will notify you that one of your students has submitted an application.
To certify a student's application, log in at http://gilmanapplication.iie.org/ Once you have logged in you will be able to view a list of your students who have submitted applications. Click on the icon to the left of the student's name to certify the application.
We encourage all advisors to submit certifications as quickly as possible. This ensures timely processing of your student's application and allows time for any questions or issues to be addressed as quickly as possible. For deadline information please refer to the Fall or Spring and Summer timelines
The Gilman Scholarship application procedures do not require institutions to designate a single financial aid and/or study abroad advisor to certify all Gilman applications from an institution. If an institution wishes to designate only one financial aid advisor and only one study abroad advisor to approve all applications, then only that advisor's account will be verified in the online application system by Gilman staff as a “Certifying Advisor”. If you would like to be listed as the only designated financial aid or study abroad advisor for your institution please contact us at gilmanadvisors@iie.org .
Gilman Advisors have until April 13, 2010 to certify Gilman applications. Visit the Gilman website's Resources for Advisors page at www.iie.org/gilman for assistance, or please feel free to contact the Gilman Program by email gilmanadvisors@iie.org or call 713-621-6300 ext.16. Our office hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm Central Time.
