Norway: PhD Position in Control, Information and Communication Systems for Environmental Surveillance of Marine Environment using Underwater Robotics

Overview

The Strategic University Program (SUP) on Control, Information and Communication Systems for Environmental and Safety Critical Systems at Department of Engineering Cybernetics in cooperation with the NTNU AURL (Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratory) and CeSOS offer one PhD on research topic of Control, Information and Communication Systems for Environmental Surveillance of Marine Environment using Underwater Robotics.

Scientific areas will be within; environmental monitoring, deepwater archaeology, ecology research, deepwater mineral extraction and complex underwater operations.
Research topic will be within one of the following:

• Hybrid control for guidance, navigation, and control of underwater vehicles like ROVs and AUVs
• Cooperative control and information optimization between AUVs and surface vessels

Eligible Candidates

The candidates should finish MSc in control engineering, marine technology or similar from a reputable university. He/she is expected to have good background in control of mechanical systems. Experience in numerical simulation programming, preferably Matlab®/Simulink®, will be an advantage. In addition, the candidate should be familiar with theoretical work concerning marine control systems. In particular candidates with knowledge about underwater vehicles will be preferred.


The successful candidate will be required to work in the Department of Marine Technology in cooperation with Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Technology and Science (NTNU). Personal qualifications will be emphasized.

The employment period is 3 years, and will start summer/fall 2010.

The position is placed at code 1017 and is remunerated according to wage levels 45 to 51 on the Norwegian State salary scale, with a gross salary from NOK 355 400 to NOK 394 200 per year. There is a compulsory 2 % deduction to the pension fund.
