Switzerland: African Borderlands Research Network Exchange Visit Grants Basel

Overview

ABORNE, the African Borderlands Research Network (http://www.aborne.org/) is an inter disciplinary network of over 130 academic researchers and institutions in Europe, Africa and North America. Its members are from all disciplines of the social sciences, with an emphasis on anthropology and history. They share a long-term interest in all aspects of international borders and trans-boundary phenomena in Africa. The emphasis is largely on borderlands as physical spaces and social spheres, but the network is also concerned with regional flows of people and goods as well as economic processes that may be located at some distance from the geographical border. Since April 2009, ABORNE is funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF) through its Research Networking Programme (RNP).

As part of this programme, ABORNE is offering two exchange visit grants to the location of the annual conference. The next annual conference will be in Basel, Switzerland, from 8-12 September 2010. Applications are invited for two grants covering September and October 2010 each. In compliance with ESF funding rules, applicants from countries that contribute to financing for the RNP will be given preference. These are currently Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and the UK.

Duty and responsibility

Applicants should work on a research project on an African borderland. They should be willing to interact with scholars working at the Centre for African Studies in Basel during a two-month stay and to contribute to the annual conference. Applications from senior and junior scholars are equally encouraged.

Value of this program

The grants cover travel expenses to and from Basel up to EUR 500.- and a monthly stipend of EUR 1.600.-. We will try to provide office space and computer access at Basel University and assist with accommodation, but all accommodation and living costs have to be covered by the grant.

How to apply

Applicants should send a two-page outline of their research project (including a passage on how the grant would contribute to it), a CV and a list of publications to Gregor Dobler (gregor.dobler@unibas.ch). Applicants prior to their PhD should also provide the contact details of two senior scholars willing to write a letter of recommendation.
Applications have to be received by February 28, 2010.
Successful applicants will be informed of the decision taken by ABORNE’s Management Committee by April 15, 2010.
