Overview
The AIA/AAF Minority Disadvantaged Scholarship provides assistance to high school graduates, college freshmen, and community college students from a minority and/or financially disadvantaged background who intend to pursue a NAAB-accredited professional degree (5-year BA or BA + MA) in architecture.
Eligibility
Applicants must be legal residents of the United States and either:
- High school seniors entering a NAAB accredited professional program in architecture
- College freshmen attending a NAAB accredited professional program in architecture, or
- Technical school or community college students that have completed high school or its equivalent and intend to transfer to a NAAB accredited professional program
Entry Requirements
The following is required from each candidate:
- A letter of recommendation completed by any of the following: an architect, an AIA component, a community design center representative, a guidance counselor or teacher, a director of a community, civic, or religious organization, or the dean, administrative head, or professor at an NAAB-accredited professional program
- A completed 2010 application form
- A copy of transcripts of all high school and college records, including SAT or ACT scores
- A copy of a written acceptance from an NAAB-accredited professional program in architecture; verification need not accompany the application and can be provided at the time of acceptance
- A personal statement outlining your Interests, experience, and career plans related to architecture
- A statement describing your disadvantaged circumstances
One freehand drawing on an 8 ½ " x 11" page depicting any subject but cannot be drafted, or done using computer-aided design
Completed portion of the last page of the application by the high school guidance counselor or the administrative head at the NAAB- accredited professional program
Award
Up to twenty scholarships are awarded annually.
