UK: PhD Opportunities in Developing Novel Nickel Base Superalloys For Turbine Discs, University of Cambridge

Overview

This new DTC has been set up in collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc and the Universities of Swansea and Birmingham. This builds on the longstanding University Technology Partnership (UTP) researching into materials for gas turbines applications.

• Up to 7 fully funded places to study for a PhD available in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge
• Degree in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering required (depending upon research topic)
• Four years funding
• £13,290 plus up to £5,000 pa additional funding available
• Fully funded for UK residents - Fees for EU residents
• Working with Rolls-Royce plc on Materials for Gas Turbines applications
• Excellent track record of recruitment into the Company
• Integrated training courses taught at all three Universities

Developing novel nickel base superalloys for turbine discs

Considerable efforts are now being made to improve the efficiency of gas turbine engines. One approach by which this can be achieved is by increasing the temperature of the gas stream. However, this is limited by the thermal stability and strength of the materials currently used for turbine disc and blade components.

In this project new compositions of nickel base superalloys will be developed and that may serve as successors to existing alloys for turbine discs and allow higher operating temperatures to be tolerated. The research will require the preparation of a range of alloys with subsequent examination using a range of techniques including electron microscopy with EDS & WDS, X-ray diffraction and mechanical testing.
