Overview
Applications are invited for the SU2P Entrepreneurial Fellowship. SU2P is a collaboration between the Universities of Glasgow, St. Andrews, Heriot Watt and Strathclyde in Scotland together with Stanford University and Caltech in the United States.
The Fellowships are to enable exceptionally talented early career researchers to spend one year at Stanford University or one of its affiliated laboratories. The aim of the Fellowships is to allow successful applicants to develop and grow their entrepreneurial skills under mentoring provided by Stanford Photonics Research Centre (SPRC). A range of priority research themes has been identified and including but not limited to:
• Stem cell imaging
• Solar cell devices and technology
• Lasers and nonlinear optics
• Integrated photonics
• Photonic sensors.

Eligibility
Candidates should already hold a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant subject or expect to hold such a degree by the start of the Fellowship. Candidates will normally be expected to be early in their research career and within three years of being awarded their PhD by the closing date for applications. Holders of established research and lecturing posts may apply but the fellowship should not be regarded as a means of taking up a routine sabbatical. The award of a Fellowship will be conditional upon the grant of an appropriate UK visa if necessary, and an appropriate visa by the United States Consular authorities.
Terms of Appointment
The Fellows will be an employee of the sponsoring Scottish University and will be bound by the employment terms of that institution. While at Stanford University the Fellows will be treated as visiting scholars and will be bound by the Stanford University terms for visitors: http://rph.stanford.edu/su18a.html. The Fellows will be hosted by the Stanford Photonics Research Centre and will be based in one of their affiliated research groups. Fellows are required to report to the SU2P Executive Committee at least once during the year and on termination of the Fellowship.
Appointments will be for a one year fixed-term period at Stanford University. (Exceptionally, an application for an extension may be considered by the SU2P Executive Committee but in no case will the period in Stanford exceed two years.) In addition the Fellows will be expected to spend 4 months at their Scottish University host on their return from the US. This will be a 4 month extension (to 16 months) of their fixed term period but will be subject to approval (by the SU2P Executive Committee) once the Fellows have completed their first 6 months at Stanford University.
Salary
The salary will be agreed by the sponsoring Scottish University and will be on the appropriate research staff scale. In addition a maximum allowance of up to £15k is available for travel, relocation and expenses agreed between the Fellow and approved by the employing institution. Health insurance must be arranged by the Fellow in consultation with the employing institution.

Candidates are responsible for ensuring that completed referee forms are returned by the referee direct to the same email address by the closing date. It is intended that the 2011 Fellowships will start between October and December 2011.
