PhD Student Position at Chalmers University of Technology

Overview

The Division of Electric Power Engineering at the Department of Energy and Environment is seeking a new PhD student to start in spring of 2011. The research will be conducted on the project “Modelling of the electric drive train”. The position is funded by The Swedish Wind Power Centre, SWPTC. The centre has been founded to support Swedish industry with knowledge about construction issues regarding wind power. SWPTC will also educate future engineers within the subject. The goal of the center is to be able to build both partial and complete wind power systems in Sweden. Behind the SWPTC are Chalmers University of Technology along with several industrial companies such as ABB, SKF, Triventus Energiteknik, Göteborgs Energi, GE Wind (Sweden), Marström Composite and DIAB.

The Electrical Power Engineering research group is heavily involved in research towards wind power applications, with the aim to reduce the environmental impact of power production. The group is working in the area of electric power systems and electric drives for wind turbines.

About the position

In this position you will be a part of a larger project team within the Swedish Wind Power Technology Centre. The aim of this project is to develop well and suitable models of the electric drive system for integration with the mechanical system in a wind turbine. There are several different drive system used today, the project will develop and adopt models of the most common ones. In the later stage of the project is the goal to optimize and integrate the electrical and mechanical system for the future wind turbine. Validation against measurements of the used models is an important part of the project. Measurements in a 4 MW wind turbine are a part of the project. The work involves model development for generators, power electronic converters and analysis due to dynamic/transient behaviour in the grid. Also diagnostics methods will be developed; by using the models developed in the first part of the project, to investigate the possibilities to find failures in the wind turbine, both mechanical as well as electrical ones.

PhD student positions are limited to five years and will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Qualifications

To be qualified the applicant must have
- a M.Sc. degree in Electric Power Engineering or documented equivalent thereof
- an excellent knowledge of both written and spoken English
- interest to cooperate within the Centre
- experience and interest to taking input from other disciplines (such as mechanical)

English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses, while graduate courses are taught in English. For non-Swedish speaking applicants, it is recommended to learn Swedish within a few years.

Application procedure

The application shall be written in English and include the following items:
1. An personal letter of a maximum one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position
2. Curriculum Vitae
Other documents to submit:
3. Attested copies of education certificates, including grade reports and other documents
4. Letters of recommendation from academic institutions and/or previous employers (optional)

The documnet must be marked with the applicant's name and reference number 2010/348 as well as the name of the documents (personal letter, diploma, CV, recommendation).

The application shall be sent electronically as pdf or zipped documents. Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form.
