Overview
Getty Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for emerging scholars to complete work on projects related to the Getty Research Institute's annual theme. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute, where they pursue research to complete their dissertations or to expand them for publication. Fellows make use of the Getty collections, join in a weekly meeting devoted to the annual theme, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.
Eligibility
Applications for Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral fellowships are welcome from scholars of all nationalities (please see below for information on the GRI-NEH residency requirements). Getty Predoctoral Fellowship applicants must have advanced to candidacy by the time of the fellowship start date and should expect to complete their dissertations during the fellowship period. Successful Predoctoral Fellowship applicants who are awarded their degree after the application deadline but before the fellowship begins, or who receive their doctorate while in residence, automatically become Postdoctoral Fellows. Postdoctoral Fellowship applicants must not have received their degree earlier than 2006.
Terms
This year the Getty Research Institute will provide two new residential Postdoctoral Fellowships, made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). These fellowships are funded by the NEH but are part of the Getty's annual scholar and fellow program.
Please note that the GRI-NEH Fellowship is identical to the Getty Postgraduate Fellowships in all but the following details:
Applicants must be United States citizens or foreign nationals who can document that they have lived in the U.S. for the three years immediately preceding the fellowship application deadline (from November 1, 2008); The GRI-NEH Fellows are in residence for ten months from September 2012 to June 2013; and The stipend for the ten-month (September to June) GRI-NEH fellowship is $42,000, inclusive of contribution to healthcare coverage. The GRI-NEH Postdoctoral Fellowship also provides workspace, housing, and transportation comparable to other Getty fellowship programs.
Complete application materials are now accepted through an online application process. The next deadline for these fellowships is 5:00 pm PST on November 1, 2011.
Applicants are notified of the Getty Research Institute's decision approximately six months following the deadline.
Getty Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis. Applications will be evaluated by the Getty Research Institute (or in the case the GRI-NEH Fellowship by an external selection committee of qualified scholars convened and staffed by the Getty Research Institute) based on: (1) the overall quality of the application; (2) how the proposed project bears upon the 2012-2013 annual research theme, Color; (3) the applicant's past achievements; and (4) how the project would benefit from the resources at the Getty, including its library and collections.
Applicants must have access to a Web browser that allows cookies. The following browser versions or later are strongly recommended: Internet Explorer 7.0 (for PC); Safari 3.2 (for Mac); Mozilla Firefox 3.0.
