UK: 10 Doctoral Studentships on offer in Digital Entertainment at the University of Bath

Overview

The program lasts 4 years. 75% of your time will be based in a company working and doing research on real projects. You will be supported by access to options from a suite of Master’s programs from both universities. The taught program will be negotiated by you, your academic supervisors and the host company so it can be tailored to your particular research needs.

We have enough initial funding for 50 students with intake spread over the next 5 years. We accept applications on a rolling basis. However, in order to allow time for finding a suitable project in a company, we advise you to apply by 19 March 2010 to start the degree in October 2010. It is possible that you begin working in your host company before you begin the taught program.

You will gain either an Engineering Doctorate or a Professional Doctorate depending on your research focus.

Package

If successful you will receive your tuition fees, a tax free annual stipend of £14,790, and a laptop.

Companies

When we receive your application we will look to match your skill base and research interests with a company. The company will be involved at every stage of the application process and they hold the final say in whether they wish to work with you. We recognise there are many reasons why a position may not be suitable and if you are unsuccessful we will work with you to find another organisation. However we cannot guarantee to find you a host company.

We have a number of companies across computer animation, visual effects and computer games supporting the CDE and interested in taking students in the first cohort. We are actively seeking industrial partners and are working with several regional organisations.

Application

Can I get financial support from the Centre for the Professional or Engineering Doctorate?

The Centre is very generously funded by ESPRC for paying both stipends and fees. The stipend is what you are paid to cover your living expenses such as accommodation, food etc. The fees are what the University is paid on your behalf to register you for the degree and to support you in your research.

The programme is open to all and we welcome international applicants. Access to the fee and the maintenance stipend does not depend on nationality but it does depend on residence.

1. UK residents (including non-citizens who have lived in the UK for three years, not in education, before the start of their Doctorate) will receive fees and stipend.

2. EU nationals who have been in full time education in the UK for three years before the start of their Doctorate will receive fees and stipend.

3. EU nationals who have lived in an EU country (not the UK) for three years will receive fees only.

4. Overseas students from countries outside of the EU are eligible for neither fees nor stipend. You must be able to show in advance that you can support yourself and pay your own fees throughout.

Please note that the residency rules are determined by the HM Government in the light of EU law. The concept of establishing a "relevant connection" with the country is the main determinant of residency. In the event of any ambiguity, it is the Government’s interpretation which determines in which category you fall. We may not vary the rules or negotiate alternative arrangements.”
