UK: Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher in Membrane Enhanced Tide Synthesis, Imperial College

Overview

We are seeking two high quality research students / Early Stage researchers to join a dynamic multidisciplinary team committed to excellence, working on a recently funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network entitled " MEMTIDE - Membrane Enhanced Tide Synthesis - A New Paradigm Peptide/Oligonucelotide Synthesis Technology. The research programme will be carried out within the Department of Chemical Engineering, one of the world’s leading institutions in both the teaching and research of chemical engineering and technology.

Salary in the range of £28,000 – 35,000 p.a.

The overall aim of the MEMTIDE Initial training Network will be to create a new generation of synthesis technologies for peptide and oligonucleotide (“tide”) manufacture, with focus on the use of emerging membrane technology to effect critical separations. Under the supervision of Professor Andrew Livingston, the Marie Curie Researchers appointed to the project will help to develop new nanofiltration membranes with improved chemical stability, and closely controlled molecular discrimination properties. Novel synthesis strategies for tides, which utilise membranes for key separations will be created and researchers will consider both step change improvements to solid phase tide synthesis, and the realisation of a completely new concept of tide synthesis based on solution phase synthesis coupled to membrane purification.

Eligible Candidates

To be eligible the applicants should be in the first four years of their research career, and not in the possession of a PhD. Applicants must have a good Masters degree (or equivalent) in a chemical engineering, chemical technology, chemistry or a related subject. Successful applicants will be required to enrol for and be expected to complete a PhD degree at Imperial College during the period of employment. The FP7 mobility rules specify that UK Nationals must have resided outside the UK for at least three out of the past four years.

In line with the FP7 Rules, researchers will receive a highly competitive living and mobility allowance, a career development allowance and allowances for travel and for participation in the training and research events of the Network.

How to apply

Our preferred method of application is online via our website http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment (please select “Job Search” then enter the job title or vacancy reference number, EN20100031JU, into “Keywords”). Please complete and upload an application form as directed.

Applicants are asked to upload a one page statement on past research experience and details of three referees familiar with your recent academic work. Should you have any queries please contact Angela Lonergan, a.lonergan@imperial.ac.uk

Closing date: 18 March 2010
