Overview
The UNU is an international community of scholars, engaged in research, postgraduate training and dissemination of knowledge in furthering the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. The mission of the UNU is to contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations and its Member States. Key goals are to serve as an international community of scholars; a bridge between the United Nations and the international academic community; and as a think-tank for the United Nations system; to contribute to capacity building, particularly in developing countries; and to serve as a platform for new and creative ideas.
UNU-IAS Objectives:
UNU-IAS was inaugurated in April 1996. It conducts research, postgraduate education and capacity development, both in-house and in co-operation with an interactive network of academic institutions and international organisations. The thematic direction of UNU-IAS concerns the interactions of social and natural systems. The current research agenda focuses on strategic paths to sustainable development and under this broad theme projects focus on biodiversity, sustainable development governance, urban ecosystems, science and technology policy options for developing and least developed countries, and sustainable development education. Responsibilities:
The Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow will be expected to be fully involved in the academic activities of UNU-IAS in the area of international governance for sustainable development. Substantial amount of time will be in carrying out research and research supervision of the postdoctoral and doctoral fellows at UNU-IAS, as well as assist in fundraising efforts. The Fellow will report directly to the Director of UNU-IAS.
Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. (no ABDs), preferably in the areas of social/environmental sciences or international environmental law/international relations, though doctoral graduates from natural sciences, who have worked with international agreements or regimes are also encouraged to apply
• Demonstrated research experience in the area of international agreements or regimes, particularly their relations with development and environmental issues
• A sound record or potential for publication in the area of international agreements and international regimes
• Research management skills and teaching experience are desirable
• Ability to prepare funding proposals
• Fluency in English and a working knowledge of other UN official languages desired,
• Applications from women and candidates originating from developing countries are encouraged
Remuneration:
This is a full-time position on a contractual basis and a locally recruited post. A monthly stipend can range from JPY 350,000 to 600,000, depending on the candidate’s academic qualifications and years of work experience.
Duration of Contract:
Initial contract on a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) for the first year, with the possibility of renewal based on good performance and subject to requirements.
