Overview
PhD Scholarship in New Neonatal Porcine Diarrhoea: Characterization of the intestinal lesions and identification of the aetiology
A 3 year PhD position in Pathology is available at the National Veterinary Institute (DTU). The place of work is Copenhagen, Division of Veterinary Diagnostics and Research. The candidate will be on the staff of the Research Group for Bacteriology and Pathology.
Job description
The aim of this PhD project is to characterize the histopathological changes of the intestinal mucosa associated with New Neonatal Porcine Diarrhoea (NNPD) with respect to determination of the possible infectious or non-infectious nature. The characterization will include both qualitative and quantitative analyses achieved by histopathological and immunohistochemical studies of epithelial cell division (proliferation) and death (apoptosis). Furthermore, the PhD-student will identify and quantificate potentially pathogenic bacteria, including Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium difficile and Escherichia coli, associated with the intestinal mucosa by use of fluorescence in situ hybridization targeting ribosomal RNA. Based on the results the PhD-student will take part in establishing diagnostic criteria for NNPD.
The PhD project is part of a larger research project aiming to clarify the aetiology of an emerging new kind of neonatal porcine diarrhoea reported from several countries, including Denmark. The project will elucidate the infectious agents that affect the incidence and the disease caused by an interaction between different viruses, bacteria and toxins. The project is testing new methods for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the disease. The project will use new, high-tech methods of analysis and the potential multifactorial nature of the disease will be clarified through an interdisciplinary collaboration.
Qualifications
Applicants with the following qualifications are preferred:
- A master's degree in either veterinary medicine, biology or a comparable discipline or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree
- Experience in porcine medicine, pathology and molecular methods.
- An interest in animal diseases, intestinal pathology and microscopy.
- Fluency in English
- Good social skills, innovative and interested in communicating research results
Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval and the candidates will be enrolled in the Life Science PhD programme of DTU.
