Netherlands: Lorentz Fellowships promoting interdisciplinary research

Overview

The Lorentz Fellowship programme is a joint venture between the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences and Humanities in Wassenaar (NIAS) and the Lorentz Center in Leiden. The programme was launched in 2006 to promote interdisciplinary research that bridges the gap between the humanities and/or the social sciences on the one hand and the natural sciences on the other. Lorentz Fellowships are awarded by NIAS to scholars whose research projects cross the boundaries of the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences. Project proposals are welcomed that approach research topics from interdisciplinary viewpoint and incorporate a variety of disciplines. Lorentz Fellowships are generally awarded for a full research year, from 1 September - 30 June, although one semester of five months is also possible.

The Lorentz Fellowship carries a stipend in the case of non-Dutch scholars. The exact amount of the stipend varies according to the rank, academic position and current salary (and other sources of income) of the applicant. The aim is to ensure that Lorentz Fellows have sufficient funds to live in reasonable comfort while at NIAS. Both the Institute and the Lorentz Center are willing to contribute towards this goal. However the value of the stipend will never be higher than 50% of the gross salary paid to a researcher of equivalent rank at a Dutch university with a maximum of € 4300 per month.

Value of this fellowship

Lorentz Fellows affiliated to a Dutch university will receive an amount of € 25,000 in case the fellowship duration is a full academic year, or € 12,500 in case the fellowship runs for one semester. This amount is paid to the Fellow's university department to compensate for the Fellow's teaching duties. The conditions of this arrangement are smiliar to the arragement for regular NIAS Fellows from Dutch universities, see here.

Funding is also available to cover (a substantial part of) the costs of organising the workshop.

Scholars whose research interests could be served by carrying out a project that matches the interdisciplinary profile of the Lorentz Fellowship can apply by downloading the application form. See additional information about the benefits of a Lorentz workshop. Applicants for regular NIAS Fellowships may sometimes be asked to convert to a Lorentz Fellowship if their research project is considered suitable. All applications will be reviewed by our interdisciplinary advisory board.

Applicants are expected to highlight the interdisciplinary aspects of their research. Research and workshop proposals should be written in clear English, avoiding disciplinary related jargon, and accessible to readers from all disciplines in keeping with the interdisciplinary aims of the Lorentz Fellowship.

Note: Holding a Ph.D. degree is a prerequisite for eligibility.

Selecting the link to the right will enable you to download and save the application form. The form can be completed in Word format. Before completing the application form and sending it in, please take time to read carefully the information about the Lorentz Fellowship as given in this website. Applications should be sent by e-mail. No application materials will be accepted by fax.

Please note, that NIAS is a residential institute and that Lorentz fellowships are awarded for advanced research only during a full academic year, running from 1 September till 30 June, or for one semester of five months. NIAS does not provide fellowships for training programmes or educational purposes. Nor does it offer courses, or financial support to conduct research elsewhere.
