Overview
The University of Nottingham has a well funded PhD position on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (TEAM) led by University College Dublin. TEAM deals with Training in European Asset Management. The justification for TEAM is that transport demand, both for passengers and freight, is growing strongly worldwide. If we are to meet economic growth targets, and facilitate integration of the European Union, it's important that the European transport network can deal with this continuing growth in demand. However, transport growth using the technologies of today is unsustainable (see: www.ucd.ie/team).
TEAM involves a series of PhD research projects that address key issues facing the transport industry of tomorrow.
Project 1.5: Finite element modelling of pavement fatigue due to heavy vehicle loading
More realistic pavement deterioration models will be developed aimed at better predicting the accumulation of fatigue damage and permanent deformation in asphaltic materials under repeated traffic loading. The models will be validated against larger scale laboratory experiments which are more simulative in nature (eg wheel tracking).
For further details of this project see: http://www.ucd.ie/team/research_projects.htm.
Eligible Candidates
Candidates should have a background in engineering or a related discipline and all applications should include the following documentation:
• Completed application form (see: www.ucd.ie/team/doc/TEAM_Application_Form.doc)
• Two completed referee forms (see: www.ucd.ie/team/doc/TEAM_Referee_Form.doc)
• Transcripts of all university records
• Full details of any English language qualifications
Informal enquiries may be addressed to: TEAM@ucd.ie. For more details please access: http://www.ucd.ie/team.
How to apply
Applications should be sent via email or post (please note with regard to REFERENCES, electronic references WILL NOT be accepted, hard copies to be sent by post ONLY) to: Sue Murphy, UCD Urban Institute Ireland, Richview, Belfield, Dublin 4, Republic of Ireland. Closing date: 11 March 2010.
Value of this program
Early Stage Researchers funded under the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks scheme typically receive a salary of approximately €34,000 plus other travel and research benefits. Please note that Marie Curie eligibility criteria will apply, please see: http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/understanding/marie-curieinbrief/home_en.html. Candidates should also note that these criteria encourage international mobility. The TEAM ITN will seek to ensure that an appropriate gender balance is achieved across the Network.
