Overview
Applications are invited for a University of Plymouth PhD Studentship in the School and Biomedical and Biological Sciences. The successful student will join one of the UKs premier laboratories on the eco/toxicology of nanoparticles, with a long history of dietary exposure studies on contaminants, especially metals. The overall aim of this study is to explore the mechanisms of nanoparticle (NP) uptake across the gut and relate this to the food and food chain risks to humans. The work will focus on TiO2 and some other nanometals, with the opportunity to learn perfused intestine techniques, intestinal cell culture, and the chance to use the data in the context of human health and environmental risk assessments. Applicants should have a good degree (2:1 or 1st class honours) or equivalent in an appropriate biosciences subject.
Funding
This PhD studentship will start immediately for a fixed term of 3 years. The student will receive a stipend of approximately £13,290 per annum and tuition fees (approximately £3,400). The studentship will only fully fund those applicants who are eligible for Home/EU fees with appropriate qualification. Applicants eligible for overseas fees would have to cover the difference (approximately £6,600) between the Home/EU tuition fee and the tuition fee for an overseas student.
Scientific Enquires can be made to Professor Richard Handy, School of Biomedical and Biological Sciences, University of Plymouth by emailing richard.handy@plymouth.ac.uk or phoning 01752 584600 01752 584600.
