Overview
The International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies (ICCHS) at Newcastle is a recognised centre for interdisciplinary research and consultancy into museum, heritage and gallery studies.
Our well established MA programmes are vocational and provide students from all over the world with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to work in a variety of roles, from curators, education officers and managers to cultural policy makers. The programmes benefit from our experience in and engagement with the sector and we also use a wide variety of external lecturers who are all practitioners in the field, working for organisations such as the National Trust, the V&A, English Heritage, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.
For 2011 entry we expect to have four studentships available through the AHRC’s Professional Preparation Master's scheme. This scheme supports students undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma or Master’s course that focuses on developing high level skills and competencies for professional practice. A full award covers fees and an annual, tax free stipend of up to £8,845 (2011/12 rates). A partial award covers fees only. If you are a part time student, support is pro rata. To see if you would be eligible for a full or partial award, please see the AHRC's student eligibility criteria.
Eligibility
You should meet the AHRC’s student eligibility criteria* and be intending to undertake one of the following programmes at Newcastle University in September 2011:
• MA Art Museum and Gallery Education
• MA Art Museum and Gallery Studies
• MA Heritage Education and Interpretation
• MA Heritage Management
• MA Museum Studies
*Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will not be eligible for this funding.
Person Specification
An upper-second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) from a recognised university or college. Those able to demonstrate considerable work experience in the museum, gallery or heritage sectors are equally encouraged to apply. Most students have acquired some preliminary experience of work in museums, galleries or a heritage organisation, usually as volunteers, and this is recommended, though not a prerequisite for acceptance onto our courses.
How to Apply
You must complete the University’s online Postgraduate Application Form, quoting the reference code AHR11 in the relevant section of the ‘your details’ tab on the online application form.
You should pay particular attention to the personal statement and the sections outlining previous relevant work and your educational background. You should provide detailed information on the breakdown of your marks for your previous degrees including, where possible, the final classification.
Your application should include:
• A personal statement of no more than 500 words. The statement needs to show your commitment and knowledge of the sector you wish to work in, including details of relevant work experience in your chosen sector; and explains clearly how the qualification will enhance your professional skills to enable you to enter that profession.
• Contact details for two referees. You should choose your referees carefully as they will be required to write a reference that provides detailed and evidenced comment about you and your suitability for your chosen programme.
Please do not send a CV as this is not part of the application process and will not be considered.
Closing date for applications: 2nd March 2011. However you are strongly advised to submit an application well in advance, as incomplete applications may not be considered after this date.
Considering Your Application
We will consider your application in two parts. First, we will let you know if you have received an offer of a place on your chosen programme.
Secondly, we will let you know if you have been shortlisted for one of the AHRC Professional Preparation Master’s studentships. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview, likely to be held in late March/early April 2011. Please note that we will not be able to pay any expenses incurred in travelling to Newcastle for interviews.
