Fellow in Mental Health Research at Australian National University

Overview

The Centre for Mental Health Research aims to improve the mental health of Australians through research and development, training, policy and the dissemination of health information. To expand the research profile of the Centre, applications from individuals working in epidemiology, e-health, ageing, or health services research would be welcome, although it is not a requirement that the applicant work in one of these areas. The centre has a focus on theoretical, applied and translational research.

The successful applicant will have a solid research record, relevant academic qualifications, and the capacity to attract grant funding. A willingness to supervise research students and to participate in the life of the Centre and the College are also desired attributes.

Grade Level C

Salary Package $93,589 - $104,348 pa plus 17% superannuation


PURPOSE STATEMENT:

A Level C Academic (Research Intensive) is expected to make independent or original contributions to the research effort within his/her field of expertise and to the organisational unit or inter-disciplinary area of which he/she is a part. This position will also help bridge the current gap between early career academics and students, and high level and profile researchers.

An academic at this level is expected to play a major role in research including the exercise of some leadership in research.

ROLE STATEMENT:

Specific duties required of a Level C Academic may include:

1. The conduct of research and the production of conference and seminar papers and publications with occasional contributions to the teaching program within the field of the staff member's research;
2. Supervision of research-support and administrative staff involved in the staff member's research and where appropriate the supervision of the research of less senior research-intensive academic staff;
3. Involvement, where appropriate, in the promotion of research links with outside bodies, including the preparation of research proposal submissions for external funding;
4. Significant role in research projects at a national level including, where appropriate, leadership of research teams or management of projects;
5. Responsible for overseeing the financial management of grants received for his/her research projects;
6. Significant involvement in professional activities including, subject to availability of funds, attendance at conferences and seminars in the field of expertise;
7. Supervision of major honours or postgraduate research projects within the field of the staff member's area of research;
8. Various research-related administrative functions;
9. Attendance at meetings associated with research or the work of the organisational unit to which the research is connected and/or departmental and/or faculty meetings and a major role in planning and committee work;
10.Other duties as consistent with the classification of the position.
Selection criteria
1. A PhD or equivalent in a field relevant to mental health or ageing combined with subsequent research experience and training and a proven strong record of publications, conference papers, reports or other contributions in population based mental health

2. Evidence of commitment to participate and succeed in competitive and non-competitive research grant schemes coupled with demonstrated successful research outcomes.

3. Demonstrated experience in the supervision of doctoral students, or a willingness to develop such capacity coupled with the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team of people from diverse backgrounds to achieve research objectives

4. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as proven expertise in outreach to research stakeholders or a capacity to develop such expertise.

5. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies, and a commitment to their application in a university context.
