Overview
MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology) offers scholarship to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities. If you would like to apply for the MEXT scholarship, please see the following procedures.
1. How to apply for the MEXT scholarship
Scholarship recipients are recruited and initially screened by a Japanese embassy (or consulate general, depending on the country).
The preliminary screening (documentary examination, written test and interview) is made at the embassy between May and August 2011. The embassy then recommends the selected candidates to the MEXT through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the beginning of September.
Application Guidelines for Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarships 2013
・ The deadlines of the applications differ according to the country. Please contact Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country.
・ Because the application processes differ according to the country in which the Japanese embassy is located, please inquire at the Japanese embassy or consulate general in your country for the details.
2. Applicants who wish to enroll at IUJ
If you wish to enroll at IUJ, you are required to pass the preliminary selection examination.
Then please contact admissions and submit the following documents to obtain a letter of acceptance*
by August 3, 2012.
* Until FY2005, each applicant was requested to contact a professor of the University of his/her choice to obtain a letter of acceptance in advance. Please note that this procedure has been changed. From FY2006, only the applicants who have been selected as the preliminary candidates by the Japanese Embassies/Consulates General are required to obtain a letter of acceptance to the university of their choice.
Each candidate who has passed the preliminary selection examination is required to contact the Japanese university of his/her choice and make the utmost effort to obtain a letter of acceptance by the end of August. (Universities do not accept any request for a letter of acceptance after the end of August.)
Note: IUJ will accept MEXT scholars only for the period needed to complete the degree for which the scholar plans to enroll. An additional 6 months of Japanese language training is not necessary for MEXT scholars who enroll to IUJ.
