Overview
Applications are invited for PhD studentships, available immediately, in the following areas within the Institute for Materials Research & Innovation (IMRI) at the University of Bolton.
•Smart materials and systems
•Fire retardant materials
•Speciality composites
•Technical Textiles
•Healthcare and medical devices
In recognition of a successful outcome in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, the former Centre for Materials Research and Innovation has been enhanced and awarded Institute status within the University of Bolton. Major research activities in IMRI, falling within the scope of the above identified PhD studentship areas, include intelligent and advanced textiles, composites, fire retardancy, nanomaterials, auxetics, photovoltaics, piezoelectrics, electro-rheological, materials modelling, smart and sensored materials, biomaterials, bioanalytical chemistry and MEMS.
IMRI has a strong national and international reputation, and is supported by access to state-of-the-art infrastructure including materials, flammability, processing, clean room, nanomaterials characterisation, textiles and composites laboratories, complemented by a suite of materials modelling capabilities. IMRI has an established track record of funding for collaborative multidisciplinary research activities and facilities from HEFCE, Research Councils (EPSRC), TSB, EU and industry sources. Regional Development Agency-funded collaborative activities are performed through the Northwest Composites Centre and Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry.
Requirement
Applicants should hold a good Honours Degree in an Engineering, Physical Sciences or related discipline.
