Overview
The doctoral programme prepares researchers for developing and defending a thesis.
Every year, 160 research grants are awarded by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates.
The 1st year of the programme is devoted to acquiring a solid background for the doctoral work and to the design of the proposed research. The second and third years are dedicated to research, field work, data collection and writing of the thesis under close supervision. The fourth year is dedicated to finishing and defending the thesis, and part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeship, and teaching opportunities.
A Ph.D. from the European University Institute is an internationally recognised qualification.
Economics
The programme is based on formally taught coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.
Teaching takes place at a level which allows researchers to pursue successful academic careers in top universities and international organizations.
Basic and advanced graduate courses are taken by 1st-year researchers. The Department, together with visiting professors from top universities, also offers a wide range of advanced and specialized graduate courses for researchers in the 1st and 2nd years.
Law
The programme reflects the European and international character of the Department and its comparative and contextual approach to law.
In the 1st year, researchers start work on their research projects and are supported by a methodology seminar and by advanced courses and Ph.D. seminars.
Courses and seminars are interactive, research-oriented and cover the main areas of the Department’s work.
Researchers present and discuss their work, and take part in conferences, workshops and working groups.
History and Civilization
The Department offers a structured 4-year programme with seminars on key and current historiographical and methodological issues and in-depth exploration of central themes of European history in the 1st year.
In the 2nd-4th years researchers pursue their own research, in collaboration with their supervisors and other professors in the Department. They present their work in seminars and workshops.
Law provides training in research skills, IC&T and multimedia skills.
Political and Social Sciences
The programme puts a strong emphasis on the theoretical and methodological tools required for Ph.D. research.
It begins with a common core course on approaches and methods in the social sciences and with more specialized courses in applied research design.
Courses in quantitative and qualitative methods are available in the 1st and 2nd years, while field work and data collection normally take place in the 2nd and 3rd years.
