Overview
One Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position in Medieval German is available for a period of three years from 1 September 2010, tenable at the University of Oxford, on a project entitled 'MITT: Mobility of Ideas and Transmission of Texts: Vernacular Literature and Learning in the Rhineland and the Low Countries 1300-1550', conducted jointly by the Universities of Antwerp, Freiburg, Lecce, Leiden and Oxford.. Candidates will be registered for D.Phil. training while employed by the University on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, and will be expected to undertake original research on a specified topic, participate in network conferences and workshops and generate quality research output. The research project will be hosted at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford, under the supervision of Dr Almut Suerbaum and Prof Nigel Palmer: (1) Writing Saints and Saintly Writing. A second project, (2) Literary Topography: Late-medieval Strasbourg, has been running since October 2009.
Candidates must possess a good degree in a related subject, at a level equivalent to the Oxford MSt in European Literature. To qualify as an Early Stage Researcher applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers starting at the date of obtaining the degree formally entitling them to embark on a doctorate in the UK. According to Marie Curie ITN rules, the positions at Oxford University are open to all nationalities except UK nationals.
Funding
The EC funding for this position, which is calculated in Euros, provides a comprehensive package based on a total sum in the region of €35,000-45,000 per annum (depending on employer deductions which will vary according to exchange rate), including an annual living allowance, a mobility allowance (to cover the expenses associated with working in a different country), a travel allowance and a career exploratory allowance. Under the terms of the EC funding, which aims to promote mobility within the research community, to be eligible for the post you must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years; the post is restricted to non-UK nationals.
The fellowship is full-time and available from 1 September 2010. The post is currently fixed term until 31 August 2013 due to fixed-term funding.
