Overview
Applications are invited from well-qualified candidates for two four-year PhD studentships within the areas of brain and cognitive ageing, and cognitive epidemiology. They will begin in September 2010. The first year will be spent in a relevant MSc programme, and the next three in research towards the PhD. One studentship will be based in the College of Humanities and Social Science, and one within the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Applicants will have a good honours degree, as appropriate to the chosen research topic; for example, in Psychology, Epidemiology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Genetics, Molecular Biology/Medicine, Statistics or another cognate discipline. The successful candidates' chosen PhD projects will be based on research aims of this Centre. Its broad aims are to discover the mechanisms which underlie individual differences in brain and cognitive ageing, and how cognitive differences influence health outcomes. The Centre's groupings include cognitive epidemiology, human cognitive ageing, stress, hormones and cognitive ageing, animal models of cognitive ageing and neural health, genetics and statistics of brain ageing, and human and animal brain imaging.
The successful PhD students will have supervisors spanning at least two of these groupings. The successful applicant will join a vibrant, successful, highly-collaborative community of researchers across the University in the areas of cognitive ageing and cognitive epidemiology, and will be expected to participate in Centre events. The studentship will be held in association with the University of Edinburgh Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, supported by the BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC and MRC, which is based in the Department of Psychology, and spans two Colleges. The Centre Director is Professor Ian Deary.
Value of this studentship
This is a University of Edinburgh, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC and MRC funded award and will provide an annual stipend for four years (1st year MSc, years 2-4 PhD) of £13,490 per year (subject to confirmation), plus University fees for home students, or fees only for EU students. International students are not eligible to apply.
