Overview
The GLAAD Fellowship Program was created to develop new leadership in the movement for LGBT equality and provide a unique opportunity to build experience in media advocacy. GLAAD Fellows are given a great deal of responsibility and are directly supervised by experts in communications, journalism and media advocacy on GLAAD’s staff.
GLAAD’s Asian Pacific Islander Fellow (API) will support the work of the API program by developing and managing projects, providing monitoring and logistical support and engaging in our media advocacy efforts. GLAAD’s API Fellow will work with state groups, API LGBT groups and allied groups and assist them with their media work. The Fellow will also build and sustain relationships with the Asian Pacific Islander News Media. The Fellow will research media contacts, pitch stories, track media contacts, write blog posts, assist in writing op-eds and letters to the editor and develop contact databases.
GLAAD's fellowship program requires a commitment of one year and a minimum of 25-30 hours per week.
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program at least half-time as a graduate or undergraduate student, or have successfully completed a graduate or undergraduate degree within the 12 months preceding the application deadline.
Responsibilities:
• Support the Director of Field and Community Media with long term projects by conducting research, contacting media outlets and compiling data
• Provide research support and media analysis on deadline for breaking stories related to API LGBT and LGBT lives (news contacts, transcripts, clips)
• Plan, write, edit, and proof written materials including news summaries, releases, alerts, letters, blog posts, board reports and other documents as needed by API media activists.
• Contribute to media planning and messaging strategy sessions with API LGBT groups and allied advocates
• Identify, assess and recommend strategies for media outlets that impact API LGBT communities
• Work collaboratively with Media Field Strategists when a state event occurs in their region to mobilize media coverage
• Establish a database of API based media clips related to a variety of LGBT issues for use in Media Spokesperson trainings
• Brainstorm and implement strategic story pitches and placements in media outlets.
• All fellows will be asked to perform some general administrative functions from time to time for the organization
• Complete other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
• Journalism, Communications and Public Relations majors a plus
• Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter.
• Interest in and knowledge of a range of API cultures, communities and traditions
• Knowledge of and commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Strong media monitoring, research and analysis skills.
• Demonstrated leadership in progressive and/or LGBT communities.
• Demonstrated experience managing research and data.
• Confident, professional phone manner for dealing with reporters and media outlets.
• Computer proficiency in word processing, database, email and Internet research.
• Inclusiveness is a vital part of GLAAD’s work. Candidates must have skills necessary to collaborate within a diverse and inclusive environment.
• Fluency in English – oral, verbal, reading and writing
• Strongly Preferred: Fluent oral, verbal, reading and writing skills in one language such as Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean or Japanese.

Reporting:
The Asian Pacific Islander Media Fellow reports to the Director of Field and Community Media and has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Compensation:
Fellows are paid a monthly stipend of $1,000. GLAAD Fellows are responsible for their own housing and living expenses. 2009 GLAAD Fellowships run from when the position is filled in January 2010 through December 31, 2010.
