USA: Media Advocacy & Research Fellowship in the United States

Overview

The GLAAD Fellowship Program was created to develop new leadership in the movement for LGBT equality and provide a unique opportunity to build experience in media advocacy. GLAAD Fellows are given a great deal of responsibility and are directly supervised by experts in communications, journalism and media advocacy on GLAAD’s staff. GLAAD’s Media Advocacy & Research Fellow will support the work of the entire Media Programs team by developing and managing projects, providing monitoring and logistical support and engaging in our grassroots media advocacy and anti-defamation efforts.

GLAAD's fellowship program requires a commitment of approximately 12 months and a minimum of 25-30 hours per week. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program at least half-time as a graduate or undergraduate student, or have successfully completed a graduate or undergraduate degree within the 12 months preceding the application deadline.


Responsibilities:

• Monitor assigned media outlets and compile, analyze and respond to coverage of issues pertaining to the LGBT community as directed.
• Support staff members on long term and short term media advocacy projects, which may include research, gathering data on media outlets and other related tasks.
• Work with staff on the planning, writing, editing and proofreading of external constituent and media communications, including releases, action alerts, letters to media professionals, blog posts, news snapshots and other materials as needed.
• Support outreach to LGBT advocates and media professionals as needed to pitch stories and place spokespeople.
• Provide research support as requested on breaking stories, including news contacts, transcripts and clips.
• Participate in the planning, development and execution of media advocacy and anti-defamation and media advocacy campaigns.
• All fellows will be asked to perform some general administrative functions from time to time for the organization, up to and including front desk coverage on a sporadic basis.
• Complete other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks to meet deadlines, and desire to be a self-starter.
• Knowledge of and commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality issues.
• Experience with quantitative & qualitative research methods (preferred)
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent critical thinking and analytical ability.
• Strong media monitoring and research skills.
• Demonstrated leadership in LGBT and/or advocacy communities.
• Confident, professional phone manner.
• Computer proficiency in word processing, database work, email and Internet research. Additional experience with video editing and web design a plus.
• Inclusiveness is a vital part of GLAAD’s work. Candidates must have skills necessary to collaborate within a diverse and inclusive environment.

Reporting:

The Media Advocacy & Research Fellow will report to the Director of Messaging and has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation:

Fellows are paid a monthly stipend of $1,000. GLAAD Fellows are responsible for their own housing and living expenses. 2010 GLAAD Fellowships run from when the position is filled in January 2010 through December 31, 2010.
