PhD Scholarship in Nursing Science, Canada

Overview

This PhD scholarship program in nursing science aims to support clinical research carriers in suicide prevention. It wishes to foster the development of nursing knowledge and practices at the clinical level in regards to the prevention of suicide.

Budget

A scholarship of the amount of 40,000$ will be granted for the 2011-2012 year.
Time period

The scholarship will start in September 2011 and will cover the 2011-2012 scholar years.

Eligibility

• Submit a research proposal relevant to the prevention of suicide;
• Be a member of the Ordre des infirmiers et infirmières du Québec (OIIQ);
• Be registered in a PhD program at a Quebec institution in nursing science or clinical science, and be supervised by a nursing science teacher;
• (if the candidate is in his/her first scholar year): be registered in classes or activities for a minimum of 9 credits in the course of the scholar year;
• (if the candidate as started his Phd research); present a letter with a summary of the research
progress written by the supervisor.
• the student and his/her supervisor must be a member of the RQRS


Evaluation

The PhD scholarship program is offered on a competitive basis and demands will be evaluated by a peer review committee of the Nursing science axis of the Reseau québecois de recherché sur le suicide.

Criteria for evaluation

• academic excellence
• knowledge in the field of mental health (classes and clinical experience)
• relevance of the research proposal to suicide research
• research experience
• scholarships, prizes and awards
• publications and presentations

Scholar’s engagement

• the student must complete his/her PhD program within 5 year;
• the student must be member of the RQRS throughout his/her PhD program;
• the recipient must practice as a full time nurse in Quebec for a minimum of one year in the three years following the PhD graduation. If this engagement is not fulfilled, the RQRS may ask for a reimbursement of the total amount of the scholarship;
• handout a copy of the PhD thesis to the Nursing Science axis of the RQRS
• present to the RQRS of FRESIQ a short paper describing the PhD results for diffusion or scientific publication purposes;
• participate at the annual congress of the RQRS at least two times, including one oral presentation to present the final results of the PhD thesis
• provide full-time inscription proofs for every semester for which scholarship is given. The scholarship will be paid at the beginning of each semester upon inscription proof reception.
• provide information about the ongoing research to the public, and material information to the RQRS or the FRESIQ.

Authors rights

Authors rights are the property of the scholarship awardees. Published articles, oral presentations and all references to the financial assistance of his/her research project must mention the financial support of the RQRS.

The RQRS and the FRESIQ have the rights to communicate a summary of the research project to their partners and to use it in their activities reports, including on their website.

Documents needed

Applications must be submitted to the coordinator of the RQRS, Mr Jean-Claude Moubarac (jeanclaude.moubarac@douglas.mcgill.ca), before April 8 th2011, at 17 h, and must include:
• copy of master and Phd (if applicable ) grades
• curriculum vitae (including clinical experience, scholarships received and publications).
• research proposal (5 pages max.) including a) introduction; b) methods; c) results anticipated;
d) relevance for suicide prevention
• Two letter of recommendations including one from the student supervisor
