UK: Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme for Developing Countries

Overview

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme is a joint initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID), and UK universities, to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the United Kingdom.

Glasgow Caledonian University offers these scholarships jointly in conjunction with Windle Trust International, an organisation that equips refugees and others affected by conflict in Africa. Windle Trust International is responsible for recruiting candidates for these scholarships on behalf of Glasgow Caledonian University.

Awards are available for full time graduate study. Courses must be Masters programmes.

Value: There are 2 fully funded scholarships available for the following postgraduate programmes:

MSc International Development (subject to approval)/ MSc Energy & Environmental Management/ MSc International Project Management/ MSc Wireless Communication Technologies/ MSc Public Health/ MSc Clinical Nutrition & Health/ MSc Health & Social Care (Physiotherapy)/ MSc Diabetes Care & Management/ MSc Food Bioscience/ MSc Biomolecular and Biomedical Science


Eligibility: To be considered for the Commonwealth Scholarship at Glasgow Caledonian University, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants should be from the countries of East, Central or the Horn of Africa and be resident in Kenya or Uganda as a refugee, OR be a Ugandan national who demonstrates a clear long-term link with Acholiland - either born in Acholiland and/or have lived or worked there for at least 5 years.
  • Have a very good first degree, with a grade equivalent to a British upper second or first class
  • Have at least 2 years of relevant work experience since completing undergraduate studies
  • Demonstrate leadership potential and excellent personal qualities
  • Be committed to returning to Africa to put into practice the skills and knowledge learned for the benefit of the community, society and regions as a whole.
  • Priority will be given to those under the age 40, although reasons may need to be submitted to make exceptions for older applicants.
    • Have sufficient proficiency in the English language (both oral and written) to effectively pursue the proposed course of study
    In addition to the above requirements, ALL applicants are required to fully meet any other specific criteria of Glasgow Caledonian University and the Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme and that may not have been listed.
