UK: Oxford University Studentship Position in Radiation Damage in Materials for Nuclear Power

Overview

The Oxford Materials Department is expanding our major research effort in nuclear materials in order to contribute to what will be one of the most important topics in stabilising the world's energy supply over the next 50 years. Currently 4 academic staff, 6 postdoctoral researchers and more than 20 students are working on different aspects of materials design and critical degradation mechanisms in the nuclear industry. This new studentship is funded by a generous gift from a department alumnus, and the aim of the project will be to contribute experimental data to the development of new models for materials behaviour under the extreme conditions expected in new reactor designs.

One of the key challenges in the study of existing and new materials for application in nuclear reactors is to understand the impact of radiation damage on the mechanical properties. This project will develop and use novel methods for the study of nanoscale structural defects and radiation induced segregation in ion, proton and neutron irradiated samples from European and other international collaborators. The student will have the opportunity to become an expert in advanced electron microscopy techniques, and may use self-ion and proton irradiation facilities at Surrey University and at the French JANNUS laboratory to undertake controlled radiation damage experiments. There will also be opportunities for participating in a major European research project involving 15 partners in the nuclear industry.

Supervisors: Prof. Chris Grovenor, Dr. Sergio Lozano-Perez

Applications will be considered as and when they are received and this position will be filled as soon as possible, but the latest date for considering applications will be 16 July 2010.

Amount awarded

The 3½-year studentship provides full fees at the Home/EU rate and will pay you a stipend of £13,590 per year in the first year and at least this amount in subsequent years (pro-rata for the final six months). Only citizens of the UK or EU are eligible for this studentship.

Enquiries and application

Any questions concerning the project can be addressed to Professor Chris Grovenor (chris.grovenor@materials.ox.ac.uk). General enquiries on how to apply can be made by e-mail to graduate.studies@materials.ox.ac.uk. You must complete the standard Oxford University Application for Graduate Studies and further information and an electronic copy of the application form can be found at

UK: Cardiff University President's Research Scholarship

Overview

Cardiff University is pleased to invite applications for a PhD studentship in Drug Discovery. This project will be based primarily within the HPV Research Group, which is a highly active and rapidly expanding unit composed of both basic scientists and clinicians. It will involve close collaboration with the laboratory of Prof. Chris McGuigan, which has world leading expertise in design of nucleoside analogue drugs.

Project Background

The incidence of HPV associated neoplasia (pre-cancer) is increasing. HPV associated Vulval Intraepithelial Neoplasia (VIN) is a painful and distressing condition, and is a precursor of vulval cancer. The main treatment for VIN is currently surgery, but a topical treatment (applied to the affected skin) would have obvious advantages. This project will use a novel model system based on cell culture to assess the potential of nucleoside analogue drugs. This challenging project will develop expertise in cutting edge technologies, including cell culture, drug design and evaluation, and biomarker discovery and validation. It could also have significant impact on treatment of VIN. Evaluation of these compounds in a primary culture system is novel and provides a unique opportunity to examine these drugs in a physiologically relevant, but experimentally tractable system. This project's immediate aim is to improve treatment of VIN and prevent malignant progression, but it is likely that the results will be relevant to treatment of other HPV associated cancers.

The specific aims of this project are:

1.To determine the efficacy and mode of action of the nucleoside analogue Cidofovir in treatment of HPV associated disease.
2.To identify structural variants of Cidofovir with increased activity against HPV associated neoplasia.
3.To investigate the effects of the demethylating agent Decitabine on HPV gene expression and disease.
4.To identify biomarkers which predict response to these two classes of therapy.

This project ties in with a current clinical trial (RT3VIN) evaluating use of Cidofovir in treatment of VIN. Both groups share the aim of Cardiff University School of Medicine, to pursue the highest standards of research, education and training, to enhance the health of the people of Wales and the wider world. The School of Medicine is one of the largest in the UK, with over 2,100 undergraduate and postgraduate students currently enrolled. The HPV Group is part of the Cancer Studies IRG which gained the highest possible rating (5*) in the Research Assessment Exercise in 2001.

Full proposals can be viewed at:

http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/presidents/drugdiscovery/index.html

Funding and Eligibility

This is a Cardiff University President's Research Scholarship. The award includes full UK/EU tuition fees plus a doctoral stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£13,290 p.a. for 2009/10,updated each year).

Academic Criteria: We are seeking high calibre candidates for these awards and applicants would normally be expected to have a First Class Honours degree or a 2.1 plus a Masters (or their equivalents). Relevant previous experience may also be considered.

Due to the broad scope of the project (molecular / cellular biology, virology, and cancer) we expect applicants to have undergraduate qualifications relevant to one, but not necessarily all of the subject areas covered by the study. Full training will be provided in all aspects of the work.

Residency: Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open all UK/EU nationals.

How to apply: Interested candidates should forward a current CV and covering letter by email to Dr Ned Powell powellng@cf.ac.uk (Informal enquiries about the project are also welcomed.)

Application Deadline: 1st August 2010

South Africa: Research Infrastructure Support Programmes (RISP) Grants

Overview

Research Infrastructure Support Programme

In 2006, the National Research Foundation (NRF) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DST) initiated the Research Infrastructure Support Programmes (RISP) Grants that support the acquisition, maintenance and development of state-of-the art research equipment. Two sub-programmes, the National Equipment Programme (NEP) and the National Nanotechnology Equipment Programme (NNEP) were established. In addition to these programmes, the need was identified for a strategic research infrastructure to support research focusing on the five grand challenges, Science and Technology missions and strategic research areas as identified in the National Research and Development strategy.

National Equipment Programme

The NEP is designed to improve the competitiveness of South African research and training by contributing to the improvement of research infrastructure, the expansion of research and training capacity and the promotion of national collaboration in line with identified research priorities. This equipment programme focuses on large and/or specialised equipment that will advance scientific research and train students to compete in a knowledge-based economy. Thus funding is considered for expensive multi-user equipment and equipment that will advance multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research. The applicant’s institution is required to contribute one-third towards the purchase price of the equipment.

National Nanotechnology Equipment Programme

The NNEP is dedicated to positioning South African research globally in the emerging areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology by promoting multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional research and human capacity development in the critical socioeconomic areas of Water, Energy, Health, Chemical and Bio-Processing, Mining and Minerals, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing. Equipment support under this programme is focused on equipment for characterisation, research and innovation.

UK: Renewable Energy & Environment PhD Studentship at Plymouth Marine Laboratory

Overview

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) is a multidisciplinary, internationally renowned, strategic marine research centre. We are offering a PhD studentship to a highly motivated graduate who is committed to developing their scientific career.

Funding

This PhD is funded by the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), and in conjunction with UKERC, PML is offering a PhD project that relates to renewable energy and the environment. The project title will be: Quantifying the costs and benefits of offshore renewable energy generation on marine ecosystems.

The UK has significant potential to develop further its marine and estuarine renewable energy sources because of its extensive coastline, high winds and relatively high tides. Offshore wind is becoming well established with a massive increase in capacity. The current status of our environmental understanding of the impacts and benefits of offshore energy generation is driven by legislation to protect sensitive species (e.g. Habitats Directive), based on requirements of planning and licence applications. Most research reports have provided preliminary evidence on which to undertake project scale mitigation for e.g. fine-tuning the footprint to avoid bird migration or in relation to individual species. At present, device development companies, utilities and investors widely view environmental issues as a hurdle to be overcome at the environmental impact assessment stage after key design, placement and infrastructure decisions have been taken. However, because these technologies are new there is little information on how such schemes will interact with the environment. Consequently, there is a need to develop methods, which integrate socio-economic valuation of ecosystem goods and services into technology evaluation to enable a holistic assessment of the impact of renewable energy production and GHG mitigation technologies on the UK carbon footprint. The main objective of this project is to investigate the impacts of offshore wind farms on ecosystem goods and services in order to develop management recommendations that would enhance offshore renewable energy generation while minimising its impacts on the marine environment. A combination of ecological research with socio-economic valuation will be undertaken including the use of monetary and non-monetary valuation techniques to quantify and value marine ecosystems goods and services.

PML has strong affiliations to, and excellent collaborations with many UK universities. The successful candidate for this studentship will be registered with York University.

Eligible candidates

You must have, or expect to obtain, a good honours degree in relevant subjects and preferably some form of post-graduate training or relevant experience.
You must meet the eligibility criteria, specified by NERC, see the website for further information

www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/available/postgrad/eligibility.asp Any applicant who does not qualify for full NERC funding will need to prove they can secure additional funding to support their application before inclusion in the selection process.

At PML you will benefit from access to the latest computer, networking and communications technology, modern laboratory instrumentation, the National Marine Biological Library (NMBL) and two modern inshore research vessels. In addition, PML runs a lively Sports & Social Club, providing a variety of free and subsidised facilities and activities. For further information on PML refer to www.pml.ac.uk

Denmark: 3-years Postdoc Position in Molecular Cell Biology at University of Copenhagen

Overview

In the Section Cell and Developmental Biology a full time postdoc position is open for the period of 3 years starting 1st of August 2010. The project is financed by a grant from the Forskningsrådet for Sundhed og Sygdom given to a group of scientist in the Section.

Position

The position is connected to a project entitled: Neuronal regulation of serum osmolarity – project part: The role of calmodulin in the regulation of the TRPV4 channel.

Members of the Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) vanilloid channel family have been suggested as osmosensors in special regions in the brain. The proposed project will mainly focus on the TRPV4 channel as a primary sensor/modulator of the neuronal activity of the omolarity sensing brain region. Part of the project, to be carried out in the laboratory of Martin Berchtold at the Biocenter deals with the regulation of TRPV4 by Calmodulin (CaM). As TRPV4 has been proposed to be regulated by CaM a main goal is to study this regulation in a genetic model system (chicken DT-40 cell line) established in our laboratory. We will construct DT-40 clones (with adjustable CaM expression) stably expressing TRPV4 in wt and mutant form. This will be followed by analysing osmoregulation, cell volume regulation and TRPV4 channel activity using patch clamp methods in close collaboration with the group of Else Hoffmann at our section. The project also includes analysis of the molecular nature of the interaction between CaM and TRPV4, as well as analysis of the downstream signaling following Ca 2+ /CaM dependent TRPV4 channel activity.

Eligible candidates

The candidate for this position should have a PhD and profound knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology and preferably also in cell signaling and protein interaction analysis.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. For post docs salary is based on seniority and between 383.670 and 407.006 DKK and an annual supplement up to DKK 49.280 before pension contribution. Negotiation for further supplement will be possible.

Additional information on Danish postdoc appointments, including salaries and taxation, is available at http://www.ku.dk/pers/hrm/

Applications must be in English and include in the following order:

- Curriculum vitae
- Description of current and previous research (max. 5 pages)

Denmark: 4 PhD stipends at Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

Overview

The Centre for Social Evolution addresses general questions about the evolution, structure and functioning of societies, and uses mostly social insects as model systems. All research programs are interdisciplinary and use approaches from genetics (DNA analysis, genomics), evolutionary theory (kin-conflicts, geographic mosaics, host-symbiont conflicts), organic chemistry (recognition compounds), epidemiology (disease pressure), and microbiology (interactions with fungal or bacterial mutualists).

The Centre has vacancies for PhD fellowships in the following areas:

Project 1:
An interdisciplinary approach to decipher communication and recognition strategies in social insects

Social insects live in a world of odours and use complex patterns of cuticular hydrocarbons for recognition. Chemical analysis, mathematical models and behavioural experiments will be used to understand the nature and the structure of the signal that can communicate colony identity in the most efficient and parsimonious way. Ants and other social insects (wasps, bees) will be used as model organisms. This is a project in collaboration with the Laboratory of Experimental and Comparative Ethology (University of Paris 13, France) and the Center for Nonlinear Phenomena and Complex Systems (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium). Further information: PDEttorre@bio.ku.dk

Project 2:
Conservation genetics of large blue butterflies – the interaction of life history and host ant specificity

The large blue butterflies have an unusual life history in which they spend most of their lives as social parasites within nests of Myrmica ants. This, together with their reliance on specific host plants, means that they are naturally rare, particularly sensitive to environmental disturbance, and hence the focus of much conservation effort. This project will examine how the generally low genetic diversity found in these butterflies is related to their life history strategy (feeding method and dispersal) and the number of species of Myrmica ants that they parasitize. The project will aim to provide concrete guidelines for the conservation of genetic diversity of large blue butterflies. Further information: DRNash@bio.ku.dk

Project 3:
Invasive supercolonies of ants – analyzing the costs and benefits of losing family structure

Some ants are among the world's worst invasive species. The key to their success appears to be a special form of social organization where colonies are not based on families but form large networks of collaborating nests. The project will seek to understand the evolution of such supercolonial ants by applying a wide range of methods, including population genetics and genomics, chemical analyses of communication cues, and breeding and behavioral experiments. The project is comparative in outlook and will use the pharaoh ant as model system, to take advantage of CSE's collection of laboratory colonies representing worldwide genetic diversity. Further information: JSPedersen@bio.ku.dk

Project 4:
Conflict and cooperation in fungus-farming symbioses

The fungus farms of attine ants and macrotermitine termites are among the most spectacular mutualisms that evolved. Earlier studies have shown that these symbioses have likely been evolutionary stable because they have various means to secure monoculture farming, so that life-time commitment between a single ant family and a single clone of fungal symbiont is the norm. The project will focus on the fungal symbiont of leaf-cutting ants and seek to clarify the genetic mechanisms by which these interactions are maintained. It will involve a combination of laboratory-based molecular and mycological techniques and field-work in Central America. Further information: JJBoomsma@bio.ku.dk

Eligible candidates

The scholarships are open to both Danish and international applicants. Normally, we will expect applicants to have obtained an MSc degree in evolutionary biology or a related field, to have a good grasp of theoretical concepts, and at least some expertise in the one or several of the practical fields and approaches listed in the introduction of this advert. It is also possible to enrol candidates at the 4+4 scheme with a 3-year BSc degree and 1 MSc year behind them. However this will involve additional years of study, a midway qualification exam, and lower wages for the first two years.

An assessment committee to evaluate the applications will be appointed. Each applicant will be notified of the composition of the committee and will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns her/him. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant, but project-relevant experience will be an advantage. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of the Centre for Social Evolution and Head of Department, based on the recommendations made by the evaluation committee.

Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science, University of Copenhagen and to start their enrolment not later than 30 September 2010.

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 300,174 per year (April 2010 level) plus pension contribution and the possibility to negotiate wage.

The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Further information can be obtained via the email addresses attached to the project descriptions.

Denmark: Postdoctoral position in Microbial Activity by Single Cell Detection, University of Copenhagen

Overview

The overall objective of the proposed project is to establish a platform for more robust fermentation processes and production organisms by understanding and controlling heterogeneity. It is essential to optimise fermentation parameters for achieving the most efficient production process. In most research projects on this topic, the population of microorganisms was considered homogeneous. However, research has shown that a typical population of microorganisms in a fermentation is heterogeneous. Due to continued technological developments in different fields, for example in genetics and molecular biology (reporter systems), flow cytometry and microfluidics (micro-bioreactors), we have now finally reached a phase where the investigation of the effect of cultivation parameters on the heterogeneity of a microbial population has become possible, which is the focus of this project.

The central project hypothesis is that there exists an optimum level of heterogeneity leading to a robust fermentation process with sustained high productivity. To investigate this hypothesis, reporter systems for cell growth and productivity will be constructed for industrially relevant model organisms (E. coli and Saccharomyces cerevisiae), which will allow to obtain a distribution of these properties for the population, e.g. by using flow cytometry. The effect of cultivation parameters on these properties will be investigated via experiments in continuous culture micro-bioreactors. Both physiological adaptations to the signals it perceives in the culture, and genetic change allowing selection of optimally adapted forms to conditions in the culture will be researched. Experimental results at microscale will be extrapolated to labscale and pilotscale.

The position is for 2 years and funded through a recently established international network project “POPCORN”. The project will be carried out at Section for Microbiology, Departmenet of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Denmark: Postdoc position in plasmid transfer and stability, University of Copenhagen

Overview

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is today recognized as being the most important factor for the rapid global dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. Plasmid-encoded antibiotic resistance giving rise to multi-resistance pathogenic bacteria may complicate the treatment of bacterial infections in humans. However, little is still known about the mechanisms controlling conjugal transfer and stability of resistance plasmids between different bacterial hosts.

The postdoctoral position includes the study of various molecular mechanisms and factors (plasmid donors and recipients, plasmid host range, regulation of transfer genes etc.) favouring or minimizing horizontal gene transfer and plasmid stability in order to screen for compounds that can reduce plasmid-borne spread of antimicrobial resistance.

The work will include the construction and design of several fluorescence marker-based molecular reporter systems. In addition, the postdoctoral candidate will be expected to develop high throughput screening assays for measuring HGT and plasmid stability using flowcytometry.

The position is for 1,5 year and funded through a recently established “Anti-Resistance Center”. The project will be carried out at Section for Microbiology, Dept. of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
