Marie Tharp Fellowship at Columbia University

Overview

Overview: The Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University invite applications for the Marie Tharp Fellowship 2011-2012. This fellowship is part of a greater EI/LDEO effort at promoting the advancement of women scientists. The purpose of the award is to provide an opportunity for earth scientists to conduct research at Columbia University for a period of 3 months. Fellows will have an opportunity to work with faculty, research staff, post docs, and graduate students during their fellowship. Each fellow is expected to participate in EI/LDEO activities and make a scientific presentation during their residence.

Background: The fellowship is named after Marie Tharp, who was the first to map details of the ocean floor on a global scale. She published the pivotal interpretation of mid-ocean ridges that was crucial to the eventual acceptance of the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift. Tharp came to the Lamont Geological Observatory (now the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory), where she began work on mapping the ocean floor. Her map of the ocean floor is still a foundation for research and education in the ocean sciences.

Eligibility: The competition is open to junior and mid-career scientists in the earth sciences. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application. The goal of this award is to promote women in science. Faculty (full-time or adjunct) and researchers at Columbia University are not eligible to apply.

Details: The duration of the Marie Tharp Fellowship is for 3 months over the period September 2011 through August 2012. Fellows are encouraged to visit for three consecutive months, but they may choose to take their fellowship in two separate visits. The fellowship must be taken in residence at one of the earth science units of the Earth Institute (see end for complete list of eligible units) and will provide up to $30,000 for support of the fellow during the three-month period.

Budget: Fellows can use this award to pay salary, research expenses and travel, up to a total of $30,000 over a three-month period. The following maximum individual limits are proposed: Salary $25,000 (including fringe); Research Expenses $25,000; Travel: $5,000. That is, if you request a salary of $24,000 then you can request only up to $6,000 for research and travel expenses. In case of compelling reasons, the fellow may submit a written request to the LDEO Directorate to waive one or more of these limits.

Application Procedure: Applicants must submit a proposal (maximum three pages) describing the proposed project and with whom at Columbia they would like to work. It is strongly recommended that applicants contact their Columbia collaborators prior to submission. The proposal must be accompanied by a Curriculum Vita, a proposed budget, and two letters of reference. Please use the budget guidelines given above. All application materials must be submitted by March 31, 2011 via email to Kuheli.Dutt@columbia.edu. All materials must be submitted as a single combined PDF document. Incomplete applications will not be considered. References may be either included in the combined document or sent via email separately.

Selection Criteria. All proposals will be reviewed by a committee of scientists and administrators at EI and LDEO. The criteria for selection will be based on scientific excellence and potential contribution to LDEO / EI research activities. The following specific points will be considered: a) Quality of scholarly record as evidenced by publications and reference letters; b) Feasibility and quality of the proposed research as evidenced by the research proposal and reference letters; c) Relevance of the proposed research to the LDEO/EI Research activities as evidenced by the research proposal.

Canadian Window on International Development Awards

Overview

These awards reflect the fact that the boundaries between international development policy and domestic policy increasingly parallel similar problems in developing countries so that both Canada and the less developed countries benefit from research on these issues. The complexities of national economic and social development in Canada are increasingly evident, and are often related to international issues. Similarly Canadian trade, investment, immigration and other policies often affect development in less developed countries. These awards will support research that illustrates these interrelationships.

In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, Fellowships and Awards is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia.

Special Feature of this Award

Successful candidates will propose comparative research requiring data from both Canada and a developing country to better understand the common, interrelated problem/issue, identified by the applicant. Selection will favor proposals that demonstrate:

•the relevance of the research topic for Canada and for the developing country or countries being studied; and
•the close linkage between the international and national component of the topic.
Successful proposals will also identify the potential for Canada and the developing country to learn from one another in dealing with the shared problem or issue

Two Types of Canadian Window on International Development Awards

1) IDRC offers one award for doctoral research that explores the relationship between Canadian aid, trade, immigration, diplomatic policy, etc, and international development and the alleviation of global poverty.

2) A second award will be granted for doctoral or master’s research into a problem that is common to First Nations or Inuit communities in Canada and a developing region of the world.

Eligibility

Applicants must:
•Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status in Canada, or hold a citizenship of a developing country;
•Be registered at a Canadian university;
•Be conducting the proposed research for a doctoral or Master’s dissertation;
•Must have completed course work and passed comprehensive examinations by the time of the award tenure.
Please note: Master’s level students are only eligible to apply for the award pertaining to research into the First Nations or Inuit communities and a developing country.

Duration

Award tenure corresponds to a period of field research, which will be no less than 3 consecutive months in a developing country and, in general, no more than 12 months.

Value

A maximum of $20,000 per year will be awarded, to cover justifiable field research expenses. Candidates must propose a budget that covers the costs of fieldwork in Canada and/or other developing countries.

Please note that living expenses incurred at the researcher's home base will not be supported.

Number of Awards

2 to 3 per year, depending on the final budget of the proposals.

Deadlines

April 1, 2011 (awards will be announced in September 2011).

Applications

Candidates must secure a short statement (no longer than 1 page, single-spaced, using a 12 pitch font) from their thesis supervisor which:
1) explains how he or she sees the proposed research conforming with the overall objective of this award to better understand an aspect of Canada’s development in the light of comparative research on social, economic, political, cultural etc. issues in a developing region of the world;
2) explains how the candidate’s proposal fits within the research interests of the department in which the student is registered.
Applications will be evaluated according to criteria, such as relevance to sustainable and equitable development and to IDRC priorities, quality of the research proposal and suitability of the candidate.

Re-applicants, whose research proposal was reviewed and was unsuccessful, must explain, in a covering letter, what changes have been made since the last application and specify where to find the changes in the proposal. Please note that Centre policy stipulates that an individual cannot apply more than twice, if unsuccessful, for the same IDRC award. However, this policy does not apply for Internship Awards.

If there are ethical questions connected with the research, the applicant may, at IDRC’s discretion, be required to submit the appropriate approval for the Ethic’s Committee of the University.

Please submit all documents listed in the List of Supporting Documents to be Submitted.
Complete applications must be received at the Centre by the deadline. Incomplete applications will NOT be considered for the competition. Applications must be sent to the following address:

India: Doctoral Fellowship in Management

Overview

The IIFM stands in a responsible position to meet the requirements of the changing scenario in the forestry and allied sector. It is constantly striving to update itself and accordingly respond to the needs of all concerned stakeholders. Given the emerging, and much-needed, emphasis on biodiversity conservation and ecological and economical role that the forests play, IIFM suitably modifies its focus, activity frame and course structure to successfully meet these needs. The National Forest Policy of 1988 strongly advocated ‘participatory regime’ in forest management and opened avenues for non-government agencies to work in forestry and related environmental and socio-economic sectors. Involvement of NGOs in the areas of social forestry, watershed development, joint forest management, and collection and sale of NTFP, thus, started expanding. All these activities not only require human-power, possessing a desired blending of skills of forestry and management sciences but also need the professional assistance and guidance for capacity building, project implementation and monitoring. King Faisal International Prize (KFIP)

Overview

Following its inception in 1397H / 1977G, the King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) has quickly established itself as one of the world's most prestigious awards. This reputation could not have been accomplished without, firstly, the strict adherence to nomination and selection procedures to ensure that all the winners are selected solely on the basis of merit, and secondly, the continuous support of academic institutions both nationally and internationally Through the Prize, the King Faisal Foundation seeks to show its appreciation to those individuals who have rendered exceptionally outstanding services to Islam and Muslims, and to scholars and scientists who have made significant contributions and advances in areas that benefit developing and Islamic countries, and humanity at large.

Each year, Islamic organizations, universities and other learned circles throughout the world nominate individuals for any of the five categories of the Prize. The winners are usually announced in January, and receive their awards two months later in a special ceremony held in Riyadh under the auspices of the King of Saudi Arabia. This ceremony is one of the most important annual events organized by the King Faisal Foundation.

Prize Categories

Each of the five Prize categories consists of a certificate, hand written in Diwani calligraphy, summarizing the laureate's work; a commemorative 24 carat, 200 gram gold medal, uniquely cast for each Prize; and a cash endowment of SR750,000 (US$200,000). Co winners in any category share the monetary grant. The Prizes are awarded during a ceremony in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of the King of Saudi Arabia.

King Faisal International Prize laureates have earned numerous other prestigious national and international prizes for their efforts. In some cases, King Faisal International Prize has preceded other international awards, including even the Nobel Prize, thus validating the rigorous and unbiased selection process.

Petrach Senior Fellowship in Eurasian Studies

The Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs announces a competition for one fellowship designed to "top off" the sabbatical/leave salary or another portable fellowship of a senior scholar for the academic year 2011-12. Fellows are expected to be in residence at IERES (http://www.gwu.edu/~ieresgwu/) for the entire period of the fellowship, to conduct research or writing on an academic project related to Eurasia (including in part Ukraine), and to contribute actively to our lively IERES intellectual community through participation in the institute's seminars, talks, and other events. There are no teaching obligations. Preferred candidates will be widely recognized as leaders in their disciplines, with a strong record of peer-reviewed publication. In the US, this would usually mean a tenured academic appointment, and in Eurasian systems a degree of doktor nauk. While the Fellow's research does not have to focus on Ukraine, part of the study should relate directly to it. All disciplines are eligible. Fellows will be awarded a shared office at IERES, university affiliation, library access, limited administrative support, a stipend of $3,300 per month for the period September 2011 - May 2012, and one roundtrip airfare to cover their arrival in and departure from Washington, DC. To apply, candidates should send a cover letter (maximum three pages) describing the proposed research/writing activity to be done at IERES and a CV by email to Caitlin Katsiaficas, caitlin@gwu.edu, with the subject heading "Petrach Senior Fellowship Application." The deadline for receipt of all application materials is February 28, 2011. Questions may be directed to Ms. Katsiaficas at 202-994-6342. This fellowship is funded by IERES's William and Helen Petrach Endowment.

Davis and Hoffman Postdoctoral Fellowships in European or Eurasian Studies

The Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs announces a competition for two junior post-doctoral fellowships for the academic year 2011-12. These fellowships are intended to support recent Ph.D. recipients as they bring their dissertation research to publication or embark upon a first post-dissertation research project related to IERES's areas of coverage (Europe and the part of Eurasia corresponding to the postcommunist world) at the outset of an academic career. Fellows have no teaching obligations, though are expected to be in residence at IERES (http://www.gwu.edu/~ieresgwu/) for the entire period of the fellowship and to contribute actively to IERES's lively intellectual community through participation in the institute's seminars, talks, and other events. Preferred candidates will combine strong signs of leadership within their own discipline and area expertise, though comparative social science projects including at least one substantial case from Europe/Eurasia will also be strongly considered. Scholars will be awarded desk space at IERES, university affiliation, library access, limited administrative support, a stipend of $3,300 per month for the period September 2011 - May 2012, and one roundtrip airfare to cover their arrival in and departure from Washington, DC. To be eligible, the applicant's doctoral dissertation must have been defended by the start of the fellowship period, but no earlier than 2007. All disciplines are eligible. To apply, candidates should send a cover letter (maximum two pages) describing the proposed research/writing activity to be done at IERES, two letters of recommendation (sent separately by the recommenders), and a CV by email to Caitlin Katsiaficas, caitlin@gwu.edu, with the subject heading "Davis-Hoffman Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition." The deadline for receipt of all application materials is February 28, 2011. Questions may be directed to Ms. Katsiaficas at 202-994-6342. These fellowships are funded by the Maria H. Davis European Studies Endowment and a gift from A. Michael Hoffman.

The participation in the interview week in Dresden is indispensable if you wish to be considered for admission to the IMPRS-MCBB.

Financial support

PhD students of the International PhD Program will receive financial support for the duration of their thesis. Financial support is granted via one of two types of funding, (i) fellowships or (ii) working contracts. The type of funding a student receives is dependent upon the specific source of funding for each student, and is defined by the available resources of the hosting group leader and the hosting organization. Due to the availability of resources, the type of funding may change during the course of the PhD thesis. Fellowships are tax free and do not include any contributions to social insurances. Health insurance is compulsory and individual arrangements are to be made by the fellow (with the help of the PhD program office). Individual arrangements for pension schemes are optional. Contracts are taxed, and contributions to health insurance, pension scheme and social benefits are included and automatically deducted from the income. The current monthly fellowship rate is to 1150 Euro and raises to 1300 Euro over time. Contracts are according to 50% TV-L E13 or 50% TvöD E13 (German tariff for employees in civil service). Irrespective of the source of funding, the initial net income (after deduction of compulsory insurances respectively tax and contribution to social insurances) is approximately 1000 Euro per month. As a rule, financial support within the International PhD Program terminates with the final exam of the doctorate proceedings.

Application requirements

We welcome applications from ambitious, highly qualified and motivated students of all nationalities. We expect outstanding academic performance and prior research experience along with the potential and enthusiasm to conduct challenging, top-class research towards a PhD.
