An award recipient must act in the dual capacity of a student in learning and as an unofficial “Japanese Ambassador of Good Will.” In this respect, an awardee is expected to maintain high standards of achievement while serving as a bridge of understanding and friendship between the peoples of the United States and Japan.

QUALIFICATION: Selection of a candidate for the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship is to be based solely on qualifications, without respect to economic status, race or religion, and shall be limited to those who are academically qualified to proceed with graduate studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Moreover, there shall be no limit as to age, and applicant may be married or single, but must be a Japanese citizen.

FIELDS OF STUDY: A scholarship may be awarded for study in the fields of history, economics, business, anthropology, culture, political science, sociology, religion, philosophy or any other subject area connected with Japanese and/or American culture, the learning of which might lead to better understanding and friendship between the peoples of Japan and the United States.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: The scholarship recipient will receive up to a two-year scholarship. The second year of the scholarship will depend on the recipient meeting satisfactory academic and personal conduct standards (see Revocation of Awards paragraph below). Additionally, recipients can, at their option, elect a one-year scholarship instead of the two-year scholarship. The amount of the scholarship shall be $15,000 per year. In addition, a Pacific Asian Scholarship at the University of Hawaii, which covers tuition expenses, has been awarded to CPA scholars. If the Pacific Asian Scholarship becomes unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances at the University of Hawaii, the CPASF will pay tuition expenses for the scholar. In either case, the scholarship recipient will not have to pay his/her tuition expenses. Two CPASF scholarships are available for academic year 2009-2010. The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation Japan Committee will make the final selection of the scholarship recipient(s).

ACADEMIC RECORD: A transcript or other official evidence of academic record at any college or university the applicant attended must be attached to his/her application.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Recommendations from two university professors must also be attached.

INTERVIEWS: The applicant may be asked to be interviewed in conjunction with the screening and final selection process.

a. Study plan for the next year (for those applying for a second year)
b. Grade sheets or transcripts (if available)
c. Narrative summarizing activities, accomplishments, and difficulties encountered during the year. Please include any suggestions that may be useful to future scholars.

Reports are mandatory and are used to evaluate the scholarship recipient’s study progress. The first year report will help determine whether or not the scholarship will be renewed for the second year. Failure to submit a report may be grounds to deny the second year of scholarship or in the extreme, revocation of the title as Crown Prince Akihito Scholar. The second year report will help to evaluate the success of the scholarship recipient as well as the overall scholarship program.

The CPA Scholarship is for one or two years of study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and provides $25,000 per year (plus a full tuition scholarship) and up to $1,500 for one-time round-trip economy class airfare from Japan to Honolulu. UK: Chevening Scholarships Programme 2010/2011 for citizens of Ukraine

Overview

The British Government’s Chevening Scholarships are among the most prestigious awards available to international students for study in the United Kingdom. They offer an ideal opportunity for scholars not only to study their chosen subject, but also to meet and network with their peers in the unique learning atmosphere that the UK provides.

The scholarships are targeted at academically gifted high-flyers who have the potential to become Ukraine’s leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers. Most scholarships are for postgraduate Master’s degrees courses (MSc, MA, LLM) lasting for up to 12 months, but the option of undertaking a shorter period of study or research (minimum 3 months) is also available.

The programme is highly competitive. Applicants are assessed according to the merit of their applications, including their leadership ability, past achievements, qualifications (both academic and professional) and their English language ability. Successful applicants will demonstrate ambition, drive and leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisational development.

The scholarships are fully funded and cover return flights, course fees and living costs.

Shortlisted candidates will be requested to submit them at a later stage. Application forms will be reviewed and a shortlist will be drawn up by end of January 2010.

Sweden: PhD POSITION IN ANIMAL ECOLOGY at the Department of Zoology, Stockholm University

Introduction

The aim of this PhD project is to investigate the evolutionary and mechanistic causes of insect host plant preference. Host preference in insects is a complex behavioural process where several sensory modalities interact to produce a series of decisions that ultimately decides whether a particular plant should be accepted as a host or not. The project will initially focus on the butterfly Polygonia c-album, which has been the subject of a long series of host plant-related studies from the butterfly lab at the Department of Zoology. These studies – ranging from genetics to phylogenetics – offer a rich context of background knowledge for the present doctoral project.

In butterflies and many other plant-feeding insects the choice of oviposition site largely determines the feeding site of the offspring, since the ability of the newly hatched larva to move to another host is very limited. This means that this choice is also to a large extent determining the actual host range (host specificity) of the insect – a feature that has been shown to influence both host shifts and speciation rates in butterflies.

In spite of the paramount important of host plant preference, we know disturbingly little about the actual mechanisms behind host plant choice, and this project is intended to elucidate how different behavioural sequences and sensory modalities interact at different levels of resolution to produce the final choice.

Most of the project will be carried out in the butterfly lab of the Department of Zoology, or at the Tovetorp Research Station and will mainly consist of behavioural essays of adult and larval responses to different plant-related cues.

The PhD degree will be awarded in Animal Ecology at the Department of Zoology. Dr. Niklas Janz at the Department of Zoology will be the main supervisor.

Qualifications

To be qualified for research studies the applicant must have completed a research
degree (e.g. Master’s), or have passed at least 120 hp (2 years) of biological studies, including an approved independent project of at least 30 hp at advanced level (“examensarbete”) within ecology or ethology. Applicants who have in principle acquired the corresponding competence in Sweden or abroad, are also qualified.

Criteria for selection

Among qualified applicants, selection is made according to the ability to profit from the studies. The criteria to be used are the applicant’s documented knowledge in subjects of relevance for the research area, ability to master language (including both spoken and written English), analytical ability, creativity, initiative, independence and ability to cooperate. The basis for judgement

of how well the applicant fulfils these criteria is: the relevance of earlier studies for the research area, grades on courses at the university level, the quality of the independent project (master thesis or “examensarbete”), references, interviews and the applicant’s letter of intent.

Previous experience in experimental behavioural ecology or ethology is highly desirable. To be included in the application: Maximum one A4-page of personal presentation and your reasons for applying (letter of intent). Curriculum vitae. Copy of independent project report (master thesis or “examensarbete”). Copy of degree certificates and transcripts of academic records (all attested). Also provide a list of two persons who may act as references (with phone numbers and e-mail addresses).

Provide two copies of all documents and the thesis. To be considered, the application labelled “PhD ref.no. 02/09 NJ” must have arrived at the address below by November 20, 2009.

Address to which the application should be sent:
Stockholms universitet
Prefekten
Zoologiska institutionen
106 91 Stockholm
Sweden

Terms of employment:

The research education comprises 48 months at full time. The position is financed by a fellowship ("utbildningsbidrag") for the first years, and then continues with PhDemployment until the end of the PhD-program. Up to 20% of teaching may be included in the position.(If teaching is included, the position will be extended).

Europe: Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Public Policy (MAPP) for Developing Countries

Overview

Erasmus Mundus Masters Program in Public Policy (MAPP) is open to both European and overseas (third country national) students. Erasmus Mundus scholarships are provided for the best eligible applicants by the European Commission.

The Consortium

The Erasmus Mundus MAPP Academic Consortium has four partner institutions:

- Central European University, Budapest, Hungary
- Barcelona Institute of International Studies, Spain
- Institute of Social Studies, the Hague, the Netherlands
- University of York, UK

Mundus MAPP is coordinated by the Department of Public Policy, Central European University

Minimum requirements are:

BA degree (normally at least Second Class);

Fluency in English: the language requirements policy is being updated. Please come back later for details.

High motivation and interest in European and international public policy.

Although Spanish is no longer a requirement for mobility tracks involving IBEI, basic knowledge of Spanish is recommended as some electives will only be available in Spanish.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant work experience.

Erasmus Mundus scholarships for students

Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for students accepted to Mundus MAPP. The Mundus MAPP universities select candidates in a competitive process from among eligible applicants, and forward the names to the European Commission for approval under the Erasmus Mundus Programme. Please note that candidates are NOT required to apply directly to the Commission for funding (indeed this is not possible). A condition of the scholarship is acceptance to Mundus MAPP.

Candidates who are awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are required to complete the entire 2-year long Mundus MAPP program, and will receive both their degrees only upon completion of the full program. Completion of year 1 alone, for instance, will not be recognized with a degree.

Eligibility for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

There are two types of scholarship offered by the European Commission. Both categories of scholarship recipients also receive financial support from the Mundus MAPP universities in the form of partial tuition fee waivers (reduced tuition fees).

Students accepted to Mundus MAPP who DO NOT come from any of the countries listed below, and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in the countries listed below, are eligible for "Category A" scholarships:

- Member States of the European Union,
- EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein).

All other students accepted to Mundus MAPP are eligible for "Category B" scholarships, i.e., students who come from one the countries listed above, or have resided or conducted their main activity in one of the countries listed above for more than 12 months in the past 5 years.

The number of scholarships for each category of individuals (students from categories A and B) are determined in the autumn by the European Commission on a yearly basis, and varies between 7 and 17 students scholarships each year.

Financial conditions

The value of the scholarships is a total of € 48 000 for Category A, and € 20 000 for Category B for the duration of the programme (two academic years).

From this amount the Mundus MAPP consortium will deduct the Mundus MAPP tuition fee on the basis of a written agreement whereby the student authorizes CEU to collect the fee. The payable tuition fees will be:

Singapore: PhD Research Scholarships at National University of Singapore (NUS)

Overview

The Asia Research Institute is pleased to offer Ph.D. research scholarships from August 2010 in the following interdisciplinary areas:

- ASIAN MIGRATION

- CHANGING FAMILY IN ASIA

- CULTURAL STUDIES IN ASIA

- RELIGION & GLOBALISATION IN ASIAN CONTEXTS

- SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

- SUSTAINABLE CITIES

The PhD scholarship is to be taken up jointly with the appropriate discipline-based department. This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore. Please note that some departments / Programmes only have one intake per year in August (Semester 1).

Requirements

Interested applicants are required to submit their application by 15th November 2009, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. Application procedures and forms can be obtained from the NUS website via this URL: http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/edu/gd-applnres.html

How to apply

Applicants must use the application forms in the respective Faculty websites depending on the Faculty to which they wish to seek admission. They should send their applications directly to their respective faculties, indicating their interest to be attached to ARI. Applicants should not send a duplicate copy to ARI.

The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:

1) The Asian Migration cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, unskilled labour migration (both documented and undocumented), and human trafficking all raise methodological and theoretical questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in development and change.

2) The Changing Family in Asia cluster (Research Leader: Professor Gavin Jones) explores the dimensions of family change in the region, their causes and implications. These dimensions include rising ages at marriage, declining size of the nuclear family, increase in one-person households and alternative family forms, changing gender roles within families, and changes in family structures. They are studied in the context of the changing political-economic structures and changing state/family roles in provision of services and support.

3) The Cultural Studies in Asia cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) focuses on comparative and pan-Asian popular culture practices in different spheres of everyday life. It encourages the challenging of conventional disciplinary boundaries to rethink received knowledge on existing issues and addresses new topics and concerns thrown up by the rapid changes and impact on cultural practices, brought about by new technologies and the new phase of global capitalism.

4) The Religion and Globalisation in Asian Contexts cluster explores the changing patterns of religious belief, practice, and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia. The title implies a general interest in transnational and diasporic communities, engagement with modern technologies and values, as well as new global or “glocal” forms of religious activities and institutions. More specifically the cluster looks at modern forms of filial piety and the interactions between politics and religion. In addition to these substantive research areas, the cluster promotes the interdisciplinary research involving the study of social and cultural theories and diverse methodological approaches to the academic study of religion.

5) The Science, Technology, and Society cluster (Research Leader: Professor Gregory Clancey) explores techno-scientific institutions, practices, and knowledge-making regimes within Asian societies and cultures. The newest of the ARI research clusters, and thus still building critical mass, we are particularly interested in topics relating to biotechnology / bioscience / biomedicine and society; interactive and digital media; Asian techno-scientific cultures; interactions between Asian sites or projects and those elsewhere, and science & technology policy. By "Asia" we mean South, East, and Southeast Asia, but are particularly interested in projects with the potential to cross these sub-regional boundaries. Methodologically we are open to a range of approaches including historical, sociological, anthropological, geographical, and media or cultural studies based initiatives.

6) The Sustainable Cities cluster (Research Leaders: Professor Heng Chye Kiang & Professor Chua Beng Huat) is targeted at examining emergent urban situations in which social-cultural and environmental sustainability require urgent attention. Issues under scrutiny include eco-urbanism, cultural preservation, and quality of social life. The following is an inclusive list of research expertise and ideas that would be welcome: sustainable architecture, urban management & governance, urban planning, urban design, urban place-making, land-use management, transport and communication modes, the interface between technology and society (for example, in relation to emerging environmental technologies, and water and energy resource use), industrial and landscape ecology, economics and finances of sustainability of quality human health and social life, regeneration of heritage areas in extant cities.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.

Germany: Research Assistant for PhD student or Postdoc Positions at Universität Tübingen

Overview

in an interdisciplinary research project.

Declarative Languages for the Exploration of Large Network Data

In collaboration with colleagues in the cognitive and social sciences as well psychology we are working on new approaches to the analysis of, potentially huge, network data. We are particularly interested in network structures that result from communication and interaction on the Web 2.0 (social networks, discussion boards, collaborative tagging sites, wikis, etc.).

To enable non-computer scientists to creatively work with such huge data sets, this project will develop

declarative database languages for the exploration and analysis of network data structures.

Your work will build on our group's prior research efforts: the database-supported evaluation of XQuery (pathfinder-xquery.org, monetdb-xquery.org), LINQ (ferry-lang.org), and modern scripting languages (e.g., Ruby). Further relevant technology includes database distribution and MapReduce (offline evaluation of non-local social network properties) or the import of external network data via, e.g., Google's OpenSocial API or RSS feeds

Requirements

We are looking forward to grow our team and welcome applications of highly motivated candidates with an excellent university degree (Master in Computer Science or a closely related field) who are willing to support our upcoming research efforts. We expect you to be open for collaboration with non-computer scientists. Last but not least, we hope that you like systems building as much as we do.

The position has no teaching obligations — if you would like to get involved with teaching nevertheless, please let us know.

Good knowledge of German as well as English (research and publication) are a requirement.

Job Details and Application
Successful candidates will sign a contract with the Universität Tübingen under the current regulations applicable to employees in Public Service (TVÖD). This is a three-year full-time position.

You will be working in Tübingen, the traditional university town in the Neckar valley (Stuttgart region). Our group offers an informal, open, and fun working environment.

Universität Tübingen aims at increasing the number of female employees and thus especially welcomes applications of female candidates.

Applications of disabled candidates will be given priority, depending on their suitability.

Application Deadline

Please send your complete application in PDF format via e-mail to Prof. Dr. Torsten Grust. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2009.

Netherlands: NUFFIC Fellowships in PhD Positions for Developing Countries

Overview

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are demand-driven fellowship programmes designed to promote capacity building within organizations in 61 developing countries by providing training and education to their mid-career staff members. Half of the available fellowships should be awarded to female candidates and the other half should be spent on candidates from sub-Saharan Africa. Apart from this, priority is given to candidates from priority groups and/or from marginalized regions to be defined by the embassies.

The NFP is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the development cooperation budget.

Eligibility requirements

A candidate applying for an NFP fellowship for a PhD degree programme must:
■ be a national of and working in one of the developing countries on the NFP country list valid at the time of application (See general information Netherlands Fellowship Programmes);
■ be a mid-career professional with at least three years' work experience;
■ have been unconditionally admitted to a Dutch institution as a PhD student. This means that the applicant must have met all the academic requirements set by the Dutch university or institute;
■ have completed an NFP PhD Study application form and have submitted all the required documentation to the Netherlands embassy or consulate;

■ not have received an NFP fellowship or any other fellowship in the three years prior to the start of the proposed PhD;
■ offer proof that the PhD will be pursued according to a ‘sandwich’ or ‘picnic’ model, which means that a large portion of the PhD research will take place in the candidate’s home country;

■ be nominated by his or her employer, who pledges to continue paying the candidate’s salary and guarantees the candidate will be able to return to an equivalent position after the termination of the fellowship period. Partial payment of salary can sometimes be allowed as an exception to the rule. It is up to the Dutch embassy to decide if an agreement between the employer and the candidate about partial continuation of payment of salary is acceptable. It should be realized, however, that the NFP allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands;

■ not be employed by a large industrial, commercial, international or multinational organization, which can be assumed to have sufficient resources of their own to finance staff training;
■ offer evidence that he or she is sufficiently skilled in speaking and writing in the language of communication during the PhD, which may be English, French or Spanish. If this is English, candidates who have received their tertiary education in any language other than English must provide evidence in the form of a score in an internationally recognized test, such as IELTS (a score of at least 6.0) or TOEFL (a score of at least 550 points on the paper based test or 213 points on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test). An exception to this rule is made for candidates who have received their tertiary education in English, and for candidates who have previously attended a course or programme at a Dutch educational institution in this language, but no longer than two years ago;

■ be available full–time to pursue the PhD without interruption, and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
■ declare that they will return to their home country immediately after the period of study and research in the Netherlands has ended;
■ comply with country-specific rules set by RNE (for more information please contact the Netherlands Embassy or consulate in your home country).

Application procedure

The application and selection procedure consists of the following eight steps (divided in two phases).

Application for admission at a Dutch institution

1) Candidates must first apply for academic admission to one of the eligible Dutch institutions. Admission as a PhD student is granted on an individual basis. Senior academic staff or a specific PhD committee decides whether or not an applicant will be accepted. Usually the assessment is based on the research proposal submitted by the applicant.

A candidate can apply for a PhD fellowship only after a research proposal has been agreed between the candidate and the Dutch institution.

Application for a fellowship

2) After receiving their letter of admission, candidates can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP PhD Study application form to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in the candidate’s own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation.

Download the application form 2010 (64 kB)
http://www.nuffic.nl/international-organizations/docs/nfp/PhD-application-form-2010.pdf

The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate.

Candidates should NOT send their fellowship application forms directly to Nuffic or to the Dutch institution, but should forward them to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country.

3) The embassy or consulate assesses the application against the criteria for eligibility listed above. Special attention is given to:

■ whether the application stems from a multi-year agreement concluded with selected organizations;
■ the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s organization and country;
■ proof that the candidate’s employer and the Dutch institution support the application.
4) The embassy or consulate forwards an application that meets all of the criteria for eligibility to Nuffic, together with its own recommendations.

5) Nuffic selects the candidates who will receive PhD fellowships based on the relevance of the proposed research for the candidate’s employing organization and home country. Nuffic gives priority to applications which:

■ propose that the research project be co–supervised by an institution in a developing country;
■ have a proven link with other activities that are financed by the NFP or other Dutch government-funded activities;
■ are submitted by female candidates;
■ are submitted by candidates from sub-Saharan Africa;
■ stem from multi-year agreements concluded with selected organizations;
■ are submitted by candidates from priority groups and/or from marginalized regions to be defined by the embassies.

6) Nuffic informs the candidates that are not eligible or not selected, as well as the Dutch embassy and the Dutch institution of its decision. The Dutch institution informs all selected candidates about the outcome through the Dutch embassy in their home country.

7) Nuffic awards the grant to cover the fellowship to the Dutch institution..

8) The Dutch institutions administer the fellowships. They pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the PhD or a maximum of four years; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements, and give guidance to the fellowship holders.

Application deadlines

Applications for PhD research projects starting in 2011 must reach the Netherlands embassy in Uganda before 4 March 2010 and in all other NFP countries before 1 June or before 1 October 2010.

Netherlands: NUFFIC Fellowships for Master's Degree Programmes

Program content

The Netherlands’ higher education sector offers a large number of international master’s degree programmes.

They cover almost every field of study, allowing candidates to receive a postgraduate education and to earn a Dutch Master of Arts degree, a Master of Science degree, or a Professional Master’s degree.

Master of Arts and Master of Science
A Master of Arts or a Master of Science degree is an academic degree, usually awarded by traditional universities on completion of a postgraduate research-oriented course of one to two years in duration.

Professional Master
A Professional Master's degree is awarded by different types of institutes of higher education and focuses on more professionally-oriented teaching programmes. Professional Master’s degrees are usually of shorter duration than a research-oriented Master's degree programme. The duration of the programmes varies between 9 and 24 months.

E-learning courses
After a successful e-learning pilot, these programmes and courses have also been added to the NFP Course List. These are indicated on the course list with the term “E-learning”. Special conditions will apply to these courses. These conditions will be announced on the Nuffic website.

Eligibility requirements

If you want to apply for an NFP fellowship for a master’s degree programme you must:
■ be a national of and working in one of the selected developing countries;
■ be a mid-career professional with at least three years' work experience;
■ not have received an NFP fellowship or any other fellowship in the three years prior to the start of the proposed master's degree;
■ have been unconditionally admitted by a Dutch institution to one of the Master’s Degree Programmes on the course list. This means that you must have met all the requirements set by the Dutch institution;
■ have completed an NFP Master’s Degree Programme application form and have submitted all the required documentation to the Netherlands Embassy or Consulate;

■ be nominated by your employer, who pledges to continue paying your salary and guarantees that you will be able to return to an equivalent position at the end of the fellowship period. Partial payment of salary can sometimes be allowed as an exception to the rule. The Netherlands Embassy decides if an agreement between employer and candidate about partial continuation of salary payments is acceptable. It should be noted, however, that NFP allowances are not sufficient to support family members, either in the home country or in the Netherlands;

■ not be employed by a large industrial, commercial, international or multinational organization, which can be assumed to have sufficient resources of its own to finance staff training;
■ offer evidence of proficiency in speaking and writing the language of instruction. If this is English and you have received your tertiary education in any language other than English, you must provide evidence in the form of a score in an internationally recognized test, such as IELTS (with a minimum score of 6.0) or TOEFL (with a minimum score of 550 points on the paper-based test or 213 points on the computer-based test or 79 on the internet-based test). An exception to this rule is made for candidates who have received their tertiary education in the English language and for candidates who have previously attended a course or programme with a Dutch educational institution, but no longer than two years ago;

■ be available for the entire period of the programme and be physically and mentally able to take part in the entire programme;
■ declare that you will return to your home country immediately after the study programme has ended;
■ comply with country-specific rules set by the Royal Netherlands Embassy (for more information please contact the Netherlands Embassy or Consulate in your home country).

Application Procedure

The application and selection procedure for a master’s degree programme consists of the following nine steps, divided into two phases:
Application for admission at a Dutch educational institution
1) You first apply for admission to the master’s degree programme of your choice. Applications should always be directed to the Dutch institution that offers the programme. The deadlines for these applications vary. The master’s degree programmes overview shows the application deadlines for each master’s degree programme.

Download the overview of master's degree programmes starting in 2010 (274 kB)
http://www.nuffic.nl/international-organizations/docs/nfp/overview-master-programmes.pdf

2) The Dutch institution assesses your application and decides whether or not your educational background and other experience meet the specific requirements for the programme in question. The Dutch institution then informs all applicants of its decisions.

Successful candidates will receive a letter indicating that they have been (provisionally) admitted. Admission must be unconditional in terms of the candidate’s education and language proficiency. Admission may be granted provisionally, subject to the candidate finding suitable funding for the programme.

Candidates are eligible for a fellowship only if they have been admitted to their chosen master’s degree programme and meet all the criteria. Candidates can only apply for a fellowship for one programme per fellowship application deadline. Being admitted to more than one programme with the same fellowship application deadline means that candidates will have to select one programme before applying for a fellowship.

Application for a fellowship
3) After receiving your letter of admission, you can apply for an NFP fellowship by presenting a completed NFP master’s degree programme application form to the Netherlands Embassy or Consulate in your own country, accompanied by the required documentation. Your application should be submitted well before the deadline for applications set by the Embassy or Consulate.

Download the application deadlines 2010 (26 kB)
http://www.nuffic.nl/international-organizations/docs/nfp/overview-deadlines.pdf

Download the application form 2010 (59 kB)
http://www.nuffic.nl/international-organizations/docs/nfp/MA-application-form-2010.pdf

The form can also be obtained from the Netherlands embassy or consulate. Some embassies require applications to be submitted in duplicate. In other countries, applications have to be submitted to the embassy through local governmental organizations. You are therefore advised to check any local regulations with the Netherlands embassy in your country. You should NOT send your fellowship application forms directly to Nuffic or to the Dutch provider, but should forward them to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in your own country.

4) The embassy or consulate assesses each application against the criteria listed above. Special attention is given to:

■ whether the application was submitted before the deadline;
■ whether the application stems from multi-year agreements made with selected organizations;
■ whether the candidate has presented a letter of admission to the programme in question;
■ whether the information accompanying the application is complete and correct, and whether the required documentation (such as passport, diplomas and language test) is in order;
■ whether the programme is on the list of master’s degree programmes starting in 2009;
■ whether the programme has added value for the sustainable capacity development of the employing organization and the development of the NFP country;
■ whether the candidate fulfils any other specific requirements set by the embassy, consulate or country in question.
5) The embassies and consulates forward the fellowship applications that meet all of the criteria to Nuffic.

6) Nuffic decides how many fellowships will be available for each programme. The allocation of fellowships between the various programmes is based on the number of eligible applicants for each programme.

7) The Dutch institutions select the candidates who will receive fellowships. The Dutch institution informs all candidates of its decisions, and applies to Nuffic for a grant.

8) Nuffic awards the grant for the Dutch institution to cover the fellowship holders’ expenses, including the tuition fees.

9) The Dutch institutions pay each fellowship holder a monthly allowance for the duration of the master’s degree programme; they also administer the fellowships, make logistical arrangements and assist fellowship holders.

Academic application deadlines

The deadlines for admission to master’s degree programmes vary and can change throughout the year. You should contact the Dutch institution directly for further information. It may occur that the Dutch institution’s deadline for applying for admission to a programme is later than the NFP deadline for fellowship applications. Nevertheless, fellowship applications can not be taken into consideration without a letter of admission to a master’s degree programme. On the master’s degree programmes overview, each entry includes the application deadlines for academic admission. For more detail about its deadline, please visit
