United Arab Emirates: 20 Scholarships at MASDAR Institute | MIT

Overview

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is announcing its call for applications for the IRENA Scholarship Programme at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MI) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for the 2012-2013 academic year. The Masdar Institute, established in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is a graduate-level university dedicated to providing solutions to issues of sustainability, focusing on advanced energy and sustainable technologies. Masdar’s faculty, students, and staff work in a vibrant research community, integrating technology, policy, and systems.

With the support of the Government of the United Arab Emirates, up to twenty IRENA scholarships are offered annually for highly-accomplished Master of Science students in the eight programmes offered at Masdar Institute: Chemical Engineering, Computing and Information Science, Electrical Power Engineering, Engineering Systems and Management, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, and Water and Environmental Engineering.

Special consideration will be given to applicants from developing countries in order to support countries most severely affected by today’s challenges of energy access, energy security and climate change.

2012 OFID Scholarships for Students from Developing Countries

Overview

OFID (The OPEC Fund for International Development) is pleased to announce that qualified applicants who have obtained or are on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree and who wish to study for a Master's degree are welcome to apply for the OFID Scholarship 2012. The OFID Scholarship will be awarded to support two students or candidates for Master’s degree studies. The applicant may be from any developing country, and he/she must first obtain admission to pursue a Master's (graduate) degree in any recognized university/college in the world. The Scholarship is open to those students who wish to pursue studies in a relevant field of Development or Energy Studies.

Through its scholarship scheme, OFID aims to help highly motivated, highly-driven individuals overcome one of the biggest challenges to their careers – the cost of graduate studies.

Value of the scholarship

The winner of the OFID Scholarship Award will receive a full tuition scholarship of up to US$50,000. The funds will be spread over a maximum of one year, toward the completion of a Master’s degree, or its equivalent, at an accredited educational institution, starting in the autumn of the academic year 2012.



Eligibility

tips Must be between the ages of 23-32 at the time of submitting his/her application.
tips Must have obtained or be on the verge of completing their undergraduate degree with a Baccalaureate from an accredited college/university, or its equivalent.
tips Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 rating system, or its equivalent.
tips Must be matriculated at an accredited university for the upcoming academic year starting August/September 2012, and must maintain full-time status for the duration of the Master's Degree.
tips Must be a national of a developing country (please see list of eligible countries below)
tips Must select a subject of study that pertains to OFID’s core mission, such as: economics of development (poverty reduction, energy and sustainable development), environment (desertification), or other related science and technology fields.

tips STEP 1: Ensure that you fulfill the OFID Scholarship Award Eligibility Criteria.

tips STEP 2: Register within the OFID Scholarship Portal by using your email address. Please note you can log onto the portal as many times as required before finally submitting the application.

tips STEP 3: Fill out the application form. Make sure to save data each time you update your application. Once you are logged in, if the page remains inactive for more than two hours, your session will time-out and you may lose unsaved data. Do not submit your application until you have completed the entire application process!

tips STEP 4: Upload necessary documents; CV, two recommendation letters, Bachelor's certificate/transcript, acceptance letter into postgraduate program and essay.

Boren Scholarships for U.S Undergraduate Students

Overview

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.


Eligibility

Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students. You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are:

  • A U.S. citizen at the time of application
  • A high school graduate, or have earned a GED
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate degree program located within the United States accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.
  • Applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Boren Scholarships are not for study in the United States.

Boren Scholarship - How to Apply

The application deadline for 2012-13 is February 9, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. EST.

Application Checklist

  1. Contact your Boren campus representative for your on-campus deadline. Continue to work with your campus representative during the application process.
  2. Submit the Boren Scholarship application, which includes the items listed below. Before starting the online application, remember to read the application instructions.
    1. a study abroad program section
    2. a budget section
    3. two statements of purpose
  3. Submit the following supplementary materials to your campus representative. If you do not have a campus representative, you may send them directly to IIE.
    1. Completed letters of reference. Letters of reference must be signed, original letters in an envelope with the signature across the seal, when they are submitted to your campus representative or IIE. Two letters are required, and you may include a third optional letter. Click here for advice about getting strong letters of reference.
    2. Official, hard copy, transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Freshmen must also include high school transcripts.
    3. Language self-assessment - Complete this form using the Language self-assessment guide.
    4. Language proficiency form (optional)
    5. Choose one of the following:
      1. One page study abroad program description with cost information. (This may be a page from the program’s website or a photocopy of part of the program brochure.)
      2. If you set up a direct enrollment or individually arranged study abroad program, please provide two letters of support. The first letter should be from your home institution and the second letter should be from your overseas host institution.

The online application must be submitted, and the supplementary materials should be given to your Boren campus representative, by your on-campus deadline. If you do not have a campus representative, the online application must be submitted, and all original supplementary materials must arrive at the following address, by the application deadline. IIE cannot confirm receipt of materials, so campus representatives and applicants should send materials using a traceable method to ensure delivery.

Erasmus Mundus (EDAMUS) Scholarships for International Students

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus Master in Sustainable Management of Food Quality (EDAMUS) aims to develop internationally trained experts in management of Food Quality.

It answers to the increasing need to better understand and anticipate the complex problems of food quality management in European Union or at an international scale. The food quality problematic and the food health policies need to take into account various factors dealing with socio economic, social, technological and biological issues. The composition of our consortium meets this requirement.

The programme is coordinated by the University of Montpellier 1 (France), in collaboration with an international partnership: Basilicata University (UNIBAS) (Italy), Mediterranean Agronomic Institute (MAI) of Zaragoza (IAMz) (Spain), MAI of Chania (MAICh) (Greece), MAI of Montpellier (IAMM) (France) and University Mentouri of Constantine (UMC) (Algeria).

University of Tsukuba (Japan), University of Sherbrooke (Canada), MAI of Bari (IAMb) (Italy) and Institut Agronomique Veterinaire (IAV) Hassan II (Morocco) are associated members. Their support will be tutoring and monitoring of students, sponsoring, quality assessment and offer of international extensive professional networks. In addition, the professional and research sectors are involved: the Latinus network, the “Q@LI-Mediterrean Pole”, the CIHEAM, the FederBio Association (Italy), the ANPA Association (Italy), the Tuko Logistics Oy company, the Raisio Group (Finland) and the “Agglomeration of Montpellier” (France).

The EDAMUS Master delivers a coherent and integrated programme that combines the collective capabilities and skills of the partners which will help the EDAMUS students to develop their capacity to have effective and appropriate reactions towards the complex management of food quality issues. It offers a two-year academic curriculum with integrated and advanced theoretical, methodological and empirical courses. It provides knowledge and expertise in food security as well as in food safety and International Food Law and development. To connect theory with applied methodology, the last semester will be devoted to an internship in a research laboratory or in an industrial company.


The qualification consists of a multiple Master’s degree. The master’s degree is fully recognised by all the partners.

Admission is based on academic excellence. Professional attractiveness will be strongly encouraged by the multicultural and multidisciplinary approach of the Master. The students will be tutored personally and carefully welcomed by each host institution's international office. Particular assistance will be given concerning accommodation and cultural integration.

In the future, our ambition is to apply for a PhD program as an educational continuation of this Master.

4 semesters, 120 ECTS




Languages of teaching:

English and French.

Courses in local language will be offered to help the students' integration.
