L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships "For Women in Science" in Sub-Sahara Africa

Overview

This conviction has united L'Oréal and UNESCO since 1998, when they joined forces to promote women in scientific research by creating the "For Women in Science" Partnership. This unique partnership has developed into an ambitious programme:

For the first time in 2009 the For Women in Science Programme is launching of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships "For Women in Science" in Sub-Sahara Africa to assist women scientists in Sub-Saharan to realize important scientific research in all fields of science, engineering and technology. This fellowship is open to all women citizens and permanent residents from Sub-Saharan African countries.

A. About the Fellowships:

Fellowships will be awarded to women scientists in Sub-Saharan African to realize important scientific research in all fields of science, engineering and technology.
Fellowships will be awarded for PhD research projects that will result in a Doctorate degree
The research is to be conducted in any country in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Fellowships up to the maximum value of US$20,000 will be awarded.
The age limits for the candidate is 40 years
The selected beneficiaries will be awarded their fellowships at a public ceremony.


B. Application Procedure.

1. Applications must be submitted on the official application forms available from African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) based at the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology in Nairobi, Kenya or downloaded from the ANSTI website www.ansti.org
2. The following information and documents must be included in the application:

• Curriculum vitae, mentioning the applicants most important scientific publications
• Certified copies of degrees or diplomas
• Detailed description, maximum of five pages, of the research proposal (including budget)
• Scientific supervisor’s recommendation or recommendation by the head of the scientific institution where the project will be realized

3. Each application shall be signed by the Dean/Head of the unit in which the candidate will realize the research work
4. Copies of any documents (including scientific publications) that will assist the Fellows’ application may be submitted.

C. Notification of the Fellows
Fellowship beneficiaries, as well as their scientific supervisors will be notified by mail and email.
The list of Fellowship beneficiaries shall be announced in the regional media by L’OREAL.
All fellows will be invited to an award ceremony

D. Conditions of the fellowships
The objective of the fellowships is to help financially the fellows to realize promising scientific research to obtain a PhD degree.
The beneficiaries agree to include mention of the Fellowship in any publications resulting from the research
The fellowships will be paid to the beneficiaries in one installment after the fellowships official ceremony and signing the preliminary contract with L’OREAL Foundation
The fellows agree to be photographed, filmed and interviewed by the media
The fellows acknowledge that they will be photographed, filmed and interviewed by UNESCO and L’OREAL for purpose linked to communicating the “FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE” program and these photos, videos and texts will be used in publications and audiovisual means including but not limited to written press, television, internet, photographs and brochures including distribution to the media worldwide.
The Fellows expressly authorize UNESCO and L’OREAL to produce, represent and use their image, name, distinctions and titles worldwide for unlimited duration. Such authorization shall strictly be limited to non-commercial uses and be directly related to the UNESCO-L’OREAL program for Women in Science.
The Fellow shall notify the President of the Jury in case of: change of place of employment or research or resignation from the scientific project. After the reception of the notification the Jury decides if changes are allowed.

Kenya: oikos UNDP Young Scholars Development Academy

Overview

The oikos UNDP Young Scholars Development Academy 2012 provides PhD students and young scholars working on poverty, sustainable development, and the informal economy from an Organisation and Management Theory perspective a platform to present and discuss their on-going research projects with fellow students and senior faculty.

Research on inclusive business models, market development and sustainability between the informal and formal economy is a promising and challenging field for young researchers and PhD students. It calls for a multitude of methods, combination of disciplines in strategy, organisation studies, sociology, anthropology and economics, and new research designs, e.g. market ethnography in organisation studies.

The 2012 academy focus, “Matching Culture and Markets for Inclusive Development”, aims to attract papers analysing the strategies of businesses, governments, multilateral agencies, NGOs and other interest groups shaping moral markets that build on local capabilities, include the poor and create opportunities for sustainable development. The event aims to advance academic research at the nexus of informal and formal economies on the Base of the Pyramid (BoP), build networks across disciplinary boundaries, and to prepare the ground for research that is relevant for both academic and business audiences.

CHINA/UNESCO - GREAT WALL SCHOLARSHIP

Overview

China/UNESCO -- the Great Wall Fellowship program is a full scholarship program set up by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) for candidates recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). MOE entrusts China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) to manage the recruitment and carry out the routine management of this scholarship program.

CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP

This program sponsors general scholars and senior scholars, and in principle the courses will be taught in English with duration up to one year. Candidates who choose programs taught in Chinese are required to get the approval from both CSC and UNESCO on application. With the approval, their scholarship duration will be extended automatically for one year.

APPLICATION

Applicants shall apply to the National Commission for UNESCO in their home countries between January and April, 2012.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
2. Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for general scholar program must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies and be under the age of 45.
- Applicants for senior scholar program must have master’s degree or above or hold academic title of associate professor or above and be under the age of 50.


VALUES OF SCHOLARSHIP

- Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, and fee for basic learning materials; and accommodation fee for dormitory on campus;
- Living allowance;
- One-off settlement subsidy after registration for new student;
- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China;
- One-off inter-city travel subsidy.

Note:

1) Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship beyond the university’s arrangements should be self-afforded.
2) Fee for basic learning materials ONLY covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution, and other textbook and materials shall be self-afforded.
3) Monthly living allowance is granted to the students through the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
- General scholars: CNY 1,700 Yuan
- Senior scholars: CNY 2,000 Yuan

Scholarship students shall receive their monthly living allowance after registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount of that month. The graduates will get a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation date set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the next month after students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university.

Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who missed the monthly living allowance during holidays could be reimbursed upon their return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for at least one month if the students do not register on time without permission from the university in advance, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from the university over a month.

Students who have to suspend their studies for pregnancy or for health reasons are required to go back to their home countries for labor or for treatment. The international travel expenses should be covered by the students themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for up to one year, and their living allowances will be suspended during their leave. The scholarship status will not be reserved for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.

4) New students will get a one-off settlement subsidy upon their arrival in China.

- CNY 1,000 Yuan for new students who will study in China for less than one academic year
- CNY 1,500 Yuan for new students who will study in China for one academic year and above
5) Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution. The students are to cover a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.

6) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China against hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the appointed medical assistance agencies will provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. For scholarship students, the individual claim will not be accepted by the insurance company.

7) One-off inter-city travel subsidy (each for coming-in and leaving China)
A hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket for overnight trip) will be provided for scholarship students traveling.

From the port of entry upon registration to the city where the admitting institution or Chinese language training institution or preparatory education institution is located;

From the Chinese language training institution or the preparatory education institution to the city where the university for major study is located;

From the city where the institution is located to the nearest port for departure upon graduation.

Meal and excess of baggage should be self-afforded.

In principle, the port of entry is Beijing, or a port of entry near where the university is located.

8) International travel expenses: self-afforded

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

The applicants must fill in and provide the following documents truly, correctly and completely (in duplicate).

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (filled in Chinese or in English)
Applicants shall fill in and print the application form after submitting it online.
The CSC Online Application System for Study in China is available on http://laihua.csc.edu.cn .
Those who cannot apply online shall fill in the application form printed by CSC.
2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy): Applicants shall also provide proof of studying on application. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy): Languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
4. Recommendation letters: Applicants for senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors.
5. Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of the applicants’ own works. Applicants for fine arts must submit a CD of the applicants’ own works (including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).
6. A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (no less than 400 words).
7. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (the original copy should be kept by the applicant. The form printed by Chinese quarantine authority could be downloaded from http://www.csc.edu.cn). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take medical examination as it is valid for only 6 months.
The above documents should be forwarded to CSC by April 30th, 2012 via the Permanent Delegation of P.R. China to UNESCO. Individual applications are not accepted by CSC. Application documents will not be returned.

SELECTION OF INSTITUTIONS AND SPECIALTIES

Applicants can choose one academic program and three institutions as their preferences from the Chinese HEIs designated by MOE. Please check the Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program. Only the listed Chinese HEIs in the Directory are available to the applicants for their study in China.

APPROVAL AND NOTIFICATION

1. CSC will assess all the application documents and CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments on the proposed institutions, specialties and duration of study. The qualified applications will be forwarded to institutions for academic competence and they will forward their nominations to CSC for approval. The applications will be regarded as invalid and will not be accepted if applicants fail to meet the eligibility or the application documents are incomplete.
2. Applicants are required to enclose the admission notice from Chinese HEIs, if they have, in the documents submitted to CSC.
3. Scholarship applicants academically accepted by Chinese HEIs will be officially awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship with the approval from CSC.
4. Students are not permitted, in principle, to change their specialties, institutions, or the duration of study as specified in the Admission Notice.
5. CSC will send the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201) to the candidates through dispatching authorities by July 31st, 2012.

UNAOC-BMW Group Award for Intercultural Innovation

Overview

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the BMW Groupare launching the BMW Group Award for Intercultural Innovation in support of the Alliance of Civilizations, under the auspices of the United Nations (UNAOC-BMW GroupAward for Intercultural Innovation). Through this first global call for proposals, the UNAOC and the BMW Group will select the most innovative projects that promote

intercultural dialogue and cooperation around the world.

The first UNAOC-BMW Group Award Ceremony will take place in Doha, Qatar in December 2011, during the IVth Annual Forum of the UNAOC held in the presence of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and world leaders. A highly competitive selection process has been set in place to guarantee that projects are selected for outstanding achievement in creativity, excellence and proven positive impact.

Eligibility Criteria

-Projects implemented by Civil Society Organizations (CSO).

-Projects must have an intercultural approach to diversity

-Field of action must fall within one of the following thematic clusters: migration and integration; intercultural awareness; education for intercultural citizenship; the role of specific groups (faith-based; women; youth; media) in promoting intercultural understanding.

-Projects must implement new approaches and methods to intercultural understanding.

-Preference will be given to small-scale projects with the potential to create a broader impact (implemented by organizations with 20 or less employees).

-Willingness to develop ideas and expand the range of action of the project with the UNAOC, the BMW Group and other partners.

-Projects cannot have been winners in previous editions of the UNAOC Marketplace of Ideas or BMW Group Awards. Winners of past editions can submit different projects, however.

-Organizations must have been operational for a minimum of 2 years.

Projects submitted within this call should have been launched already for 12 months minimum.

-Projects can be implemented in any language.

Awards

A total amount of 50,000 USD will be split among the ten winners of the Award at the occasion of the Awards ceremony in Doha in December 2011.

In addition, selected projects will become members of the World Intercultural Facility for Innovation (WIFI), a program of the UNAOC in collaboration with the BMW Group. The goal of the WIFI is to connect inspiring grassroots projects with media, donors, governments and other partners in order to help them in scaling up, replicating and achieving a broader and greater impact.

Based on a case to case needs assessment, winners will receive during one year active guidance and support from the WIFI team in order to replicate and scale up their projects. They will also benefit from partner organizations that will sponsor Awardees in collaboration with the UNAOC and the BMW Group. This support may vary depending on the nature of the project and may include IT support, legal advice, increasing visibility, etc.

United Nations Foundation Journalism Fellowship

Overview

The United Nations Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner’s historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. The UN Foundation builds and implements public/private partnerships to address the world’s most pressing problems, and works to broaden support for the UN through advocacy and public outreach. Through campaigns and partnerships, the organization connects people, ideas, and resources to help the UN solve global problems. The campaigns reduce child mortality, empower women and girls, create a new energy future, secure peace and human rights, and promote technology innovation to improve health outcomes. In an effort to provide the latest information to U.S. journalists on these pressing global issues and offer unparalleled access to renowned policymakers and experts, the UN Foundation will host a special fellowship for U.S.-based journalists during the week of the UN General Assembly.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

This four-day fellowship, from September 18-21, will have a special focus on global health issues and will provide fellows with unequaled access to country leaders, celebrities, UN experts, and NGO representatives to report on the events and announcements being made during UN Week. The fellowship will also include access to the 2011 Social Good Summit.

With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this fellowship is designed to foster participants’ understanding of the issues surrounding international development and global health, and will provide the exclusive opportunity for fellows to participate in on- and off-the-record issue briefings, roundtables, and conversations with issue experts and high-level officials.

This fellowship is intended for U.S.-based reporters who do not have regular access to key UN experts, but are interested in global health, international development, and the United Nations. Special consideration will be given to journalists whose portfolios include health.

The Fellowship Program is not a degree or journalism training program.

• Applicants must be fluent in reading, writing and speaking English.

OHCHR Fellowships for People of African Descent

Overview

In the context of the International Year for People of African Descent, the Anti-Discrimination Section of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is launching a Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent from 10 October to 4 November 2011.

The Fellowship Programme will provide participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the United Nations Human Rights system and its mechanisms, with a focus on issues of particular relevance to people of African descent.

This will allow the fellows to better contribute to the protection and promotion of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of Afro-descendants in their respective countries and communities.

Who can apply?

· The candidate must be an African descendant.

· The candidate must have a minimum of 4 years experience dealing with afro-descendant or minority issues.

· The candidate must be fluent in English.

· A letter of support from an afro-descendant organization or community.

Selection Process

In selecting the fellows, gender and ensuring a regional balance will be taken into account. All documents submitted must be in English.

Entitlements

The selected candidate is entitled to a stipend to cover accommodation, basic living expenses in Geneva, basic health insurance as well as a return economy class plane ticket.

Joint UNDP-IMF Prize for Best Study on Remittances

Overview

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and International Monetary Award (IMF) are pleased to launch the call for paper for the UNDP-IMF Prize for Best Study on Remittances. UNDP Kosovo in partnership with IMF would like to offer researchers and students from different disciplines free access to the unique 2010 Kosovo Remittance survey dataset in order for them to produce a substantive analysis by using the data. This initiative is an opportunity to gain more knowledge about the size, forms, and effects of remittances as well as to stimulate a debate on the role of remittances and innovative strategies for increasing the impact of remittances on Kosovo’s economy.

Aims and Topics

The call for papers will focus on empirical research that makes use of the survey data to produce an analysis of the main characteristics of remittances in Kosovo, and operationally useful suggestions on how to increase the development impact of remittances in Kosovo. The papers should have the following components:

- Statistical analysis
- Practical applications on how to improve the development impact of remittances
- Concrete policy recommendations

Researchers are encouraged to complement the Kosovo Remittance survey data with other existing quantitative and qualitative data, including possible international comparisons.


Data

The survey data has been collected in December 2009 and it is based on a representative sample of 4,000 households. The survey captured information of 1) household employment, income and expenditure, 2) migrants’ as well as households’ outlook for migration, 3) the channels for transmitting remittances, their uses, as well as households’ outlook for remittances flows, and 4) effects of remittances on income, employment, access to healthcare and to education. The dataset consists of Remittance Survey data in SPSS and excel format, and Questionnaire in English and in local languages.

Those who wish to use the data for a research paper are required to give credit to "UNDP/ USAID/IMF Kosovo Remittance Survey Dataset 2010".

How to Participate

We invite researchers and students to submit the application form to ulla-maija.rantapuska@undp.org, after which the access to the data set will be provided.

A full paper should be submitted by 31 May, 2011 to ulla-maija.rantapuska@undp.org.

The paper must be in English and should not exceed 25 standard pages including annexes. The paper should include short abstract, keywords and references.

Evaluation of the Papers

The papers will be evaluated by a professional panel composed of representatives from UNDP, IMF, Central Bank of Kosovo, Government of Kosovo and academia.

The papers will be evaluated will be based on the following criteria:

- New innovative use of the data
- Critical thinking
- Applicability to Kosovo situation.

Prize and Presentation of the Awards

Announcement of the winner of the best paper will be given by the end of August 2011.

The best papers will be awarded with certificates and prizes totalling EUR 3,000 in 2011 at an event, the modalities or date of which have not been decided yet.

Fellowship at U.S. Agency for International Development

Overview

The Population Reference Bureau is accepting applications for its International Programs Fellowship at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The Fellowship is a full-time position lasting for two years and will begin in summer 2011. The Fellowship is sponsored and managed by PRB and funded through PRB’s IDEA Project (Informing Decisionmakers to Act), a cooperative agreement between PRB and USAID. The Fellow will work within USAID’s Office of Population and Reproductive Health in Washington, D.C., which works to advance and support voluntary family planning and reproductive health programs worldwide. The Fellowship is intended for recent graduates with a B.A. or B.S.; candidates with advanced degrees are ineligible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Support the Senior Policy Advisor and members of office management.
- Respond to external and internal requests for information on U.S. family planning requirements and agency family planning activities.
- Support efforts to improve compliance monitoring of family planning requirements within the USAID program.
- Complete administrative duties as assigned.


Other duties and activities will be determined by the interests of the selected Fellow and the needs of the Office of Population and Reproductive Health.

REQUIREMENTS

- B.A., B.S., or other undergraduate degree by June 2011.
- Education and/or work experience related to international population/reproductive health policy or public health.
- Strong writing, analytical, and communication skills; ability to effectively manage time and work with diverse personalities.
- Skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint.
- Dedication to advancing family planning and reproductive health issues and programs in developing countries.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly assume additional responsibilities and complete tasks with limited oversight.

In addition, experience living outside of the United States and foreign-language facility (especially French) is highly desirable. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or hold an appropriate work visa and will need to get a security clearance.

The PRB International Programs Fellowship pays a stipend of $35,000-$40,000 per year plus benefits. The position is subject to the availability of funds. The Fellowship may involve foreign travel.

UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award Africa

Overview

UNEP – the voice of the environment within the United Nations – is launching a new competition, with funding support from the Government of the United States of America, to encourage inspiring reporting on the environment by young journalists in Africa.

The competition, which is made possible through funding support from the Government of the United States of America, is open to African journalists between 25 and 35 years old, working for African news and media organisations.

The UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award is open to print, broadcast and online journalists who have reported on environmental issues in 2010.

This could include a radio report on a local sustainable development project, a news article on pollution or a television report on the effects of climate change.

Reports should demonstrate relevance to local and / or regional communities in Africa

A jury of journalists and environmental experts will select the winning entry.

The winner will be eligible for an all-expenses-paid trip to the USA*, where they will follow a unique, “green” itinerary. The winner will travel across the country, interacting with environmental projects, leading environmental journalists, scientists and public figures.

The award ceremony will take place during the 26th Session of the UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum to be held in Nairobi, Kenya from 21 - 25 February 2011.

UNDP Asia-Pacific Human Development Academic Fellowships for Asia and the Pacific

Overview

The aim of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Academic Fellowships for Asia and the Pacific is to analyse issues from the human development perspective, with a focus on fostering creative thinking and innovative research on the subject among young people. The research must focus on a well-defined aspect of human development, could be theoretical, applied, policy-oriented or a combination and must amount to a substantive contribution to human development thinking relevant for the region.

The Fellowship is intended for young Ph.D. students who are at an advanced dissertation stage working on a topic related to human development – theoretical, applied or policy oriented.

Theme – Climate Change and Human Development

Human development is about expanding human potential and enlarging human freedom. Climate change is a human development challenge, as it threatens to erode human freedoms and limit choice and plunge large numbers into overty and hardship.

Climate change is hampering efforts to deliver the MDG promise as it undermines international efforts to combat poverty and exacerbates already existing inequalities. Those, in turn, can result in an increase in conflict over sharing natural resources. Climate change is in fact an increasingly powerful driver of wider inequalities between and within countries, also between women and men.

Climate change can result in increased frequency of extreme weather events, flooding, storms, drought, increases in sea temperatures, and melting of glaciers, etc., which effect negatively agriculture and health/nutrition. This has negative implications on the livelihood of poor and vulnerable communities who depend largely on agriculture and natural resource management. In particular, women are affected in their roles of food producers and providers, guardians of health, and care givers. Reduced employment opportunities, for example for women working in agricultural fifields, constitute a net loss in income which leads to a loss in savings, making it even harder for households to cope with disasters.


The magnitude of this long term challenge can be assessed considering that an additional 1.8 billion people are expected to face water stress by 2080, with large areas of Central Asia, northern parts of South Asia and northern China facing a grave ecological crisis as a result of glacial retreat and changed rainfall patterns. Up to 330 million people in coastal and low-lying areas are expected to be displaced through flflooding and tropical storm activity. In the Asia Pacific region, in particular, over 70 million people in Bangladesh and 22 million people in Viet Nam could be affected by global warming-related flflooding.

What are the mechanisms through which the ecological impacts of climate change affect the poor? Are there examples of good practices to ensure climate and human security?

Have climate change and other environmental concerns been integrated in development planning in the context of environment protection elopment planning in the context of environm tion and sustainable development? What has been the effectiveness of policies introduced? What is a possible agenda to promote human development and climate security? These are some of the questions that could be addressed.

The Fellowship

The UNDP Human Development Academic Fellowship for Asia Pacific carries an award of US$ 10,000. The students will be required to submit to UNDP a copy of their fifinal approved dissertation. In addition, Fellows may be expected to present their work in workshops/seminars and other events arranged by UNDP (travelrelated costs will be covered separately).
The thesis will acknowledge UNDP’s support by saying: “The author acknowledges the financial support received from the UNDP Asia Pacific Human Development Academic Fellowship for the research.”

Selection Criteria

- Exceptional degree of creativity in choice of idea or topic
- Stage of development of the proposal
- Value-addition or new direction to the human development concept, methodology, analysis, application or policy relevance
- Track record of past accomplishments
- Time needed for completing the work undertaken

Selection will be based on an assessment of written proposals up to 2,500 words. A review of eligibility and assessment of the proposals submitted will be the basis for short listing. Short listed candidates will be required to participate in an interview. An independent selection committee will review the proposals and interact with the short listed candidates for the fifinal selection.

The Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (LEAP)

Overview

The Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (Borlaug LEAP) is a fellowship program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to enhance the quality of thesis research of graduate students from developing countries who show strong promise as leaders in the field of agriculture and related disciplines as defined by Title XII. LEAP is part of the overall Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Borlaug LEAP Fellowship supports engaging a mentor at a Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) system center to support and enhance the thesis research and mentoring experience. Awards are made on a competitive basis to students who show strong scientific and leadership potential, have a well coordinated proposal between their home university, a US university mentor, and the CGIAR mentor, and whose research is related to a strong research and support project within the host country. Emphasis is placed on work that has relevance to the national development of the student's home country.


Currently there are two limited release Request for Applilcations (RFAs):

1. Applications are requested for sub-Saharan African students conducting research on topics related to USAID's global hunger and food security initiative. The focus region is sub-Saharan Africa. All topics related to agriculture (as defined by Title XII) and food security are admissible. Due date for applications is October 25, 2010.

2. Applications are requested for developing country students conducting research in partnership with CRSPs (Collaborative Research Support Programs). The focus region is global. Eligibility Criteria

Who is eligible to apply?

An eligible candidate for a Borlaug LEAP grant must be

■currently enrolled as an MS or PhD student at a U.S. or developing country university
■fluent in reading, writing and speaking English (with a TOEFL score 500 or above)
Note: Limited Release Requests for Applications may have additional eligibility requirements (see below)

In addition, eligible candidates will have

■completed at least one year of graduate level course work in the graduate program the applicant is currently enrolled in with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
■a thesis-topic related to agricultural development and related fields. Title XII legislation broadly defines agriculture as:
"...the science and practice of activity related to food, feed, and fiber production, processing, marketing, distribution, utilization, and trade, and also includes family and consumer sciences, nutrition, food science and engineering, agricultural economics and other social sciences, forestry, wildlife, fisheries, aquaculture, floriculture, veterinary medicine, and other environmental and natural resources sciences."

The IARC is particularly keen to promote the development of expertise in cancer research in low- and medium-resource countries by training postdoctoral researchers from these countries who can return to apply their new skills and expertise. Therefore, applications from candidates from low- and medium-resource countries or applicants from any part of the world but with projects related to low- and medium-resource countries are encouraged. The fellowship is for a period of one year, with the possibility of an extension for a second year subject to satisfactory appraisal. Candidates are required to have spent less than five years abroad (including doctoral studies) and have finished their doctoral degree within five years of the closing date for application or be in the final phase of completing their doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D.).


The working languages at IARC are English and French. Candidates must be proficient in English at a level sufficient for scientific communication. World Health Orgainization: Visiting Scientist Award for Senior Scientists (WHO), France

Overview

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is the specialized cancer Agency of the World Health Organization (WHO). Situated in Lyon, France, the IARC houses both epidemiology and laboratory Groups allowing it to fulfil its mission: to coordinate and conduct research on the causes of human cancer, to elucidate the mechanisms of carcinogenesis and to develop scientific strategies for cancer control.

The Agency is offering the exciting opportunity of an IARC Visiting Scientist Award. This Award is for a qualified and experienced investigator with recent publications in international peer-reviewed scientific journals who wishes to spend from six to twelve months at the IARC working on a collaborative project in a research area related to the Agency's programmes. The major areas of activity are focused on understanding cancer etiology (including infections, nutrition, lifestyle, environment, radiation, genetics), developing strategies for cancer prevention (primary prevention, screening) and elucidating the underlying mechanisms of carcinogenesis through studies of molecular and cell biology, molecular genetics, epigenetics and molecular pathology. The Agency also has strong programmes dedicated to describing the global cancer burden and to the evaluation of carcinogenicity through its Monographs Programme. There is an emphasis on interdisciplinary work in the Agency's research activities.

UN OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme in Switzerland

Overview

Applications are invited for attending the 2011 Indigenous Fellowship Programme, which runs from 1-4 months for different languages (English, French, Spanish and Russian). During the Programme, selected Fellows will be based at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The Fellows will undergo interactive trainings on topics such as the work of OHCHR, the UN system and mechanisms etc. Deadlines for applications: May 31, 2010 (English speaking), June 30, 2010 (Spanish speaking), October 1, 2010 (French speaking) and October 29, 2010 (Russian speaking).

By the end of the programme, fellows will have increased general knowledge about "United Nations system, international human rights instruments and mechanisms, in particular those relevant to indigenous peoples and be capable of giving training sessions within their communities/ organizations on the knowledge acquired."

Benefits

Selected candidates for the fellowship will receive air travel support (return ticket by economy class) from their country of residence to Geneva, modest accommodation in Geneva, basic health insurance and a monthly grant to cover living expenses.

Japan: Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award for Television 2010

Overview

The ABU, CASBAA and UNICEF are calling on Asia-Pacific broadcasters and producers for entries for the 2010 Child Rights Award.

The Award is given each year to the best television programme on children's rights produced in the Asia-Pacific region. It recognises the efforts of broadcasters in pursuing both the production of top quality children's programming and better coverage of children's issues.

Programmes both for children and about children are eligible and can cover any child rights' issue. Entries can include documentaries that detail the plight of children, dramas that help break down stereotypes and discrimination, or animation that teaches and entertains. Entries must have been broadcast between June 2009 and May 2010 and must be received by 25 June 2010. The award will be presented during the ABU General Assembly on 19 October 2010 in Tokyo. The winner will be flown to Tokyo for the ceremony.

The ABU CASBAA UNICEF Child Rights Award has proved to be a tremendous success since its inception in 2001, last year attracting more than 60 entries from over 10 countries.

Italy: Call for applications for the 3rd edition of the Master programme on "World Heritage at Work"

Overview

The call for applications for the 3rd edition of the Master programme on "World Heritage at Work", offered by the University of Turin, the Polytechnic of Turin and the International Training Centre of ILO, in collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, is now open.

The programme is intended for professionals involved in the management of a World Heritage properties and/or those who are interested in such site activities as well as those who are currently involved in the preservation or promotion of cultural heritage.

Four categories of participants are invited to apply:

■ Officials already involved in projects concerning a WHS, or interested in designing and managing special projects for WHS in the future;
■ Professionals involved with research activities related to improved of the management system of a WHS;
■ Fresh graduates and junior specialists interested and knowledgeable about local cultures and indigenous traditions;
■ NGOs staff and other development officials interested to dialogue both with local authorities and with the community in further promotion and marketing of cultural ideas.
The essential Requirements for admission are a university degree (BA) as well as fluency in the English language.

The course offers a number of special features:

■ integration of theory and practice;
■ an interdisciplinary approach to culture as a resource for development, with emphasis on management of a World Heritagesite or property;
■ emphasis on operational issues in project design and project cycle management;
■ interactive presentations followed by analysis of case studies and close tutoring support


The programme will be held in Turin, Italy, at the campus of the International Training Centre of the ILO and the World heritage Site of Venaria reale.

Coursework takes place at the Centre's compact and functional campus, where participants from around the world meet, live and learn together, in a stimulating international environment. The campus and facilities (bank, post office, travel agency, laundry, gym, sports and recreation facilities) provide an ideal environment for living and studying, sharing experience and creating networks. A 4 weeks component of the programme is delivered at the WHS of Venaria Reale.The tuition fees are EURO 6000.

A number of scholarships are available for deserving participants, especially those from developing and transition countries.

Costa Rica: oikos UNDP Young Scholars Development Academy 2010

Overview

Focus 2010: Inclusive Partnerships for Sustainable Market Innovations

The second annual oikos UNDP Young Scholars Development Academy provides PhD students and young scholars (PhD rewarded in last years) working on poverty and sustainable development from a management or economics perspective a platform to present and discuss their ongoing research projects with fellow students and senior faculty.

Research on inclusive business models, market development and sustainability at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) is a promising and challenging field for young researchers and PhD students. It calls for a multitude of methods, combination of disciplines in management and economics and new research designs, e.g. experimental development economics.

The 2010 academy focus, “Inclusive Partnerships for Sustainable Market Innovations”, aims to attract papers fostering new ideas and solutions how businesses, governments and other stakeholders can actively account for environmental and social resources and limits when building markets that include the poor and create opportunities for human development. The event aims to advance academic research on the Base of the Pyramid (BoP), development and governance issues, build networks across disciplinary boundaries and to prepare the ground for research that is relevant for both academic and business audiences.


Programme and Faculty

The programme encompasses graduate student presentations, guest lectures, professional development roundtables and social events. Feedback will be given by fellow students and three internationally well-reputed researchers:

Application and Deadlines

To allow in-depth discussions the oikos UNDP Young Scholars Development Academy is always limited to 15 PhD students and young scholars working on poverty and development from a management or economics perspective. The fee is CHF 400. The oikos Foundation for Economy and Ecology will cover the total cost of accommodation, food and excursions.

Africa: USAID Community Service Learning Award for a higher education partnership with Collège Universitaire Régional de Bambey in Senegal

Overview

Higher Education for Development (HED) mobilizes the expertise and resources of the higher education community to address global development challenges. HED manages a competitive awards process to access expertise with the higher education community in coordination with the American Council on Education (ACE), the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the Association of American Universities (AAU), the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU), and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).

Funding from USAID’s Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade, Office of Education (EGAT/ED), as well as USAID’s functional and regional Bureaus and worldwide Missions supports higher education partnerships to advance global development, economic growth, good governance, and healthy societies. These partnerships provide training, applied research, program evaluation, policy analysis, and program implementation, which are critical to furthering USAID’s foreign assistance goals.

Amount Awarded

Higher Education for Development (HED) anticipates making one (1) award of up to $300,000 for three years for a higher education partnership with Collège Universitaire Régional de Bambey in Senegal. This partnership will focus on developing and implementing community service education models and techniques that support student internships and partnerships with local middle school teachers. The partnership will aim to improve middle school teaching methods on topics of health including nutrition, sanitation, and food safety. The partnership will also focus on information communication technologies (ICT) to improve middle school teaching and learning.


Partnership DescriptionThe partnership will strengthen the overall capacity of CUR-Bambey via:

◦developing targeted community service programs;
◦improving curricula;
◦promoting the link between the university, middle schools and the community; and,
◦designing programs that prepare faculty and students for program replication.

CUR-Bambey will then be able to provide effective community service curriculum, and support middle school teacher education. The partnership is also expected to help the Senegalese Ministry of Higher Education and CUR-Bambey develop teaching modules and training-of-trainers programs that cover health (e.g. nutrition, sanitation and food safety) and ICT. All materials and courses resulting from this partnership should be produced and delivered in French.

Applications must address monitoring four areas of performance:
(1) Human capacity building at the partner institutions (both for the host country and U.S. partner);

(2) Institutional capacity strengthening for the partner institutions (both host country and U.S partners.);

(3) Contributions to host-country national health and information communication technology development goals; and

(4) Cost-effectiveness of partnership activities/programs.

Applications must contain an implementation plan that can be realistically completed within three years, and a plan for making activities sustainable beyond the funding period. The implementation plan must include an outline for assessment of program impact at the conclusion of the funding period. It is expected that one of the first steps for the implementers will be to collect baseline data.

HED is organizing an online information session on April 9, 2010 with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for interested applicants. During this session, applicants may submit questions concerning this RFA to representatives of Collège Universitaire Régional de Bambey and HED using a web-based forum.
