L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships "For Women in Science" in Sub-Sahara Africa

Overview

This conviction has united L'Oréal and UNESCO since 1998, when they joined forces to promote women in scientific research by creating the "For Women in Science" Partnership. This unique partnership has developed into an ambitious programme:

For the first time in 2009 the For Women in Science Programme is launching of the L’Oréal-UNESCO Regional fellowships "For Women in Science" in Sub-Sahara Africa to assist women scientists in Sub-Saharan to realize important scientific research in all fields of science, engineering and technology. This fellowship is open to all women citizens and permanent residents from Sub-Saharan African countries.

A. About the Fellowships:

Fellowships will be awarded to women scientists in Sub-Saharan African to realize important scientific research in all fields of science, engineering and technology.
Fellowships will be awarded for PhD research projects that will result in a Doctorate degree
The research is to be conducted in any country in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Fellowships up to the maximum value of US$20,000 will be awarded.
The age limits for the candidate is 40 years
The selected beneficiaries will be awarded their fellowships at a public ceremony.


B. Application Procedure.

1. Applications must be submitted on the official application forms available from African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) based at the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology in Nairobi, Kenya or downloaded from the ANSTI website www.ansti.org
2. The following information and documents must be included in the application:

• Curriculum vitae, mentioning the applicants most important scientific publications
• Certified copies of degrees or diplomas
• Detailed description, maximum of five pages, of the research proposal (including budget)
• Scientific supervisor’s recommendation or recommendation by the head of the scientific institution where the project will be realized

3. Each application shall be signed by the Dean/Head of the unit in which the candidate will realize the research work
4. Copies of any documents (including scientific publications) that will assist the Fellows’ application may be submitted.

C. Notification of the Fellows
Fellowship beneficiaries, as well as their scientific supervisors will be notified by mail and email.
The list of Fellowship beneficiaries shall be announced in the regional media by L’OREAL.
All fellows will be invited to an award ceremony

D. Conditions of the fellowships
The objective of the fellowships is to help financially the fellows to realize promising scientific research to obtain a PhD degree.
The beneficiaries agree to include mention of the Fellowship in any publications resulting from the research
The fellowships will be paid to the beneficiaries in one installment after the fellowships official ceremony and signing the preliminary contract with L’OREAL Foundation
The fellows agree to be photographed, filmed and interviewed by the media
The fellows acknowledge that they will be photographed, filmed and interviewed by UNESCO and L’OREAL for purpose linked to communicating the “FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE” program and these photos, videos and texts will be used in publications and audiovisual means including but not limited to written press, television, internet, photographs and brochures including distribution to the media worldwide.
The Fellows expressly authorize UNESCO and L’OREAL to produce, represent and use their image, name, distinctions and titles worldwide for unlimited duration. Such authorization shall strictly be limited to non-commercial uses and be directly related to the UNESCO-L’OREAL program for Women in Science.
The Fellow shall notify the President of the Jury in case of: change of place of employment or research or resignation from the scientific project. After the reception of the notification the Jury decides if changes are allowed.

CHINA/UNESCO - GREAT WALL SCHOLARSHIP

Overview

China/UNESCO -- the Great Wall Fellowship program is a full scholarship program set up by the Ministry of Education of P. R. China (hereinafter referred to as MOE) for candidates recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). MOE entrusts China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as CSC) to manage the recruitment and carry out the routine management of this scholarship program.

CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS AND DURATION OF SCHOLARSHIP

This program sponsors general scholars and senior scholars, and in principle the courses will be taught in English with duration up to one year. Candidates who choose programs taught in Chinese are required to get the approval from both CSC and UNESCO on application. With the approval, their scholarship duration will be extended automatically for one year.

APPLICATION

Applicants shall apply to the National Commission for UNESCO in their home countries between January and April, 2012.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and be in good health.
2. Education background and age limit:
- Applicants for general scholar program must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies and be under the age of 45.
- Applicants for senior scholar program must have master’s degree or above or hold academic title of associate professor or above and be under the age of 50.


VALUES OF SCHOLARSHIP

- Exempt from registration fee, tuition fee, fee for laboratory experiment, fee for internship, and fee for basic learning materials; and accommodation fee for dormitory on campus;
- Living allowance;
- One-off settlement subsidy after registration for new student;
- Fee for outpatient medical service, Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China;
- One-off inter-city travel subsidy.

Note:

1) Costs of the laboratory experiment or internship beyond the university’s arrangements should be self-afforded.
2) Fee for basic learning materials ONLY covers the necessary learning materials prescribed by the host institution, and other textbook and materials shall be self-afforded.
3) Monthly living allowance is granted to the students through the host institution at the following rates (CNY Yuan per month):
- General scholars: CNY 1,700 Yuan
- Senior scholars: CNY 2,000 Yuan

Scholarship students shall receive their monthly living allowance after registration. New students who register before 15th (15th included) of the registration month will get the full amount of living allowance of that month, and those who register after 15th will get half amount of that month. The graduates will get a living allowance for another 15 days after the graduation date set by the university. The allowance will be terminated from the next month after students suspend their studies, drop school or complete schooling from the university.

Monthly living allowance covers school holidays. Scholarship students who missed the monthly living allowance during holidays could be reimbursed upon their return on campus. The allowance will be suspended for at least one month if the students do not register on time without permission from the university in advance, leave for non-health reasons or are absent from the university over a month.

Students who have to suspend their studies for pregnancy or for health reasons are required to go back to their home countries for labor or for treatment. The international travel expenses should be covered by the students themselves. With the university’s approval, the scholarship status can be reserved for up to one year, and their living allowances will be suspended during their leave. The scholarship status will not be reserved for those who suspend their studies for other reasons.

4) New students will get a one-off settlement subsidy upon their arrival in China.

- CNY 1,000 Yuan for new students who will study in China for less than one academic year
- CNY 1,500 Yuan for new students who will study in China for one academic year and above
5) Fee for outpatient medical service refers to the outpatient expense in the institution’s hospital or the hospitals appointed by the institution. The students are to cover a certain percentage of expense in accordance with the institution’s relevant regulations.

6) Comprehensive Medical Insurance and Protection Scheme for International Students in China is provided by MOE for the scholarship students in China against hospitalizing for serious diseases and accidental injuries. The institutions or the appointed medical assistance agencies will provide advancement service for insurance expenses, and claim for compensation with relevant payment receipts from the insurance company according to the stipulated insurance articles. For scholarship students, the individual claim will not be accepted by the insurance company.

7) One-off inter-city travel subsidy (each for coming-in and leaving China)
A hard-seat train ticket (hard-berth train ticket for overnight trip) will be provided for scholarship students traveling.

From the port of entry upon registration to the city where the admitting institution or Chinese language training institution or preparatory education institution is located;

From the Chinese language training institution or the preparatory education institution to the city where the university for major study is located;

From the city where the institution is located to the nearest port for departure upon graduation.

Meal and excess of baggage should be self-afforded.

In principle, the port of entry is Beijing, or a port of entry near where the university is located.

8) International travel expenses: self-afforded

APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

The applicants must fill in and provide the following documents truly, correctly and completely (in duplicate).

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship (filled in Chinese or in English)
Applicants shall fill in and print the application form after submitting it online.
The CSC Online Application System for Study in China is available on http://laihua.csc.edu.cn .
Those who cannot apply online shall fill in the application form printed by CSC.
2. Highest diploma (notarized photocopy): Applicants shall also provide proof of studying on application. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
3. Academic transcripts (notarized photocopy): Languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English.
4. Recommendation letters: Applicants for senior scholars must submit two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors.
5. Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of the applicants’ own works. Applicants for fine arts must submit a CD of the applicants’ own works (including two sketches, two color paintings and two other works).
6. A study or research plan in Chinese or in English (no less than 400 words).
7. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (the original copy should be kept by the applicant. The form printed by Chinese quarantine authority could be downloaded from http://www.csc.edu.cn). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to take medical examination as it is valid for only 6 months.
The above documents should be forwarded to CSC by April 30th, 2012 via the Permanent Delegation of P.R. China to UNESCO. Individual applications are not accepted by CSC. Application documents will not be returned.

SELECTION OF INSTITUTIONS AND SPECIALTIES

Applicants can choose one academic program and three institutions as their preferences from the Chinese HEIs designated by MOE. Please check the Directory of Chinese Higher Institutions Admitting International Students under Chinese Government Scholarship Program. Only the listed Chinese HEIs in the Directory are available to the applicants for their study in China.

APPROVAL AND NOTIFICATION

1. CSC will assess all the application documents and CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments on the proposed institutions, specialties and duration of study. The qualified applications will be forwarded to institutions for academic competence and they will forward their nominations to CSC for approval. The applications will be regarded as invalid and will not be accepted if applicants fail to meet the eligibility or the application documents are incomplete.
2. Applicants are required to enclose the admission notice from Chinese HEIs, if they have, in the documents submitted to CSC.
3. Scholarship applicants academically accepted by Chinese HEIs will be officially awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship with the approval from CSC.
4. Students are not permitted, in principle, to change their specialties, institutions, or the duration of study as specified in the Admission Notice.
5. CSC will send the Admission Notice and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201) to the candidates through dispatching authorities by July 31st, 2012.

UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers' Fellowships Programme

Overview

2012 Cycle - Reinforcing its belief in “people building the next era”, the Government of Japan offers 20 fellowships per year, for the twelfth consecutive year, to be awarded to deserving candidates from developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs), who are eager to undertake research on one or more of the topics listed below. The aim of the fellowships is to support innovative and imaginative post-graduate research in four areas of development of particular interest to UNESCO.

UNESCO designed the project “UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme” (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) in the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Capacity-Building of Human Resources which was established in November 2000 by the Government of Japan to enable UNESCO to give impetus to research in four areas under UNESCO’s Priority Programme Areas.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme (UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme) funded under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the capacity-building of Human Resources will aim, in particular, to impact on capacity-building and research activities in the following areas: Environment (with particular attention to Water Sciences); Intercultural Dialogue; Information and Communication Technologies; and Peaceful conflict resolution. No other research topics will be considered.

ELIGIBILITY Applicants, a maximum of TWO from each applying National Commission, must meet the following general criteria: 1. Candidates under this Programme must be post-graduate researchers, already holding either an M.A. or M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) and wishing to pursue research work abroad (preferably in their own region) with a view to enhancing knowledge in one of the four specific fields mentioned in paragraph D.1 below. Thus, those who are in the process of completing their Master’s degree must have completed it PRIOR to taking up their Fellowship. 2. Candidates must be persons of high intellectual promise who may be expected to make significant contributions to their country on return. 3. Candidates must be no more than 40 years of age. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1972 will not be considered under the Programme. 4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative. 5. Priority attention will be given to: * Women candidatures * Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs) * Palestinian researchers 6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research. 7. Applicants must be in good health (both physically and mentally). CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION 1. Domains of research: » Environment (with particular emphasis on Water Sciences, Water Issues, Climate Change, Engineering Capacity Building in the Developing World) » Intercultural Dialogue » Information and Communication Technologies » Peaceful Conflicts Resolution 2. Duration of proposed research: minimum: 3 months maximum: 9 months 3. Closing date for receipt of applications: 13 January 2012 4. Possible date of commencing research: Any time from September 2012 onwards 5. Deadline for termination of research: end of December 2013 6. Place of study: In one or two countries abroad It should be understood that at the end of the Fellowship, the beneficiary must agree to return to his/her home country so that knowledge acquired may be put to good use in local research and training programmes. 7. Study arrangements: Research must be carried out under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution 8. Application Procedures: All applications must be submitted with the required documentation on the UNESCO Fellowship Application Form. Each Member State may nominate a maximum of two (2) candidates. It is the National Commission’s responsibility to select the two candidates whose applications it wishes to submit to UNESCO. The application(s) should reach the Section of Participation Programme and Fellowships, UNESCO, 7, Place de Fontenoy 75352 Paris 07 SP before 13 January 2012 midnight and an advance copy may be sent by fax to: 33.1.45.68.55.03. The application must include the following attachments: (i) The UNESCO Fellowship application form duly completed in duplicate. Two recent photographs (obligatory) should be included with the form. (ii) Certified copies of degrees or diplomas (including transcript of grades) in duplicate. Proof of having obtained a Master’s Degree must be included. (iii) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate’s work. (iv) A host institute’s letter of acceptance (i.e. the institute that has accepted the candidate for work should she/he be selected for a Fellowship). This letter of acceptance must indicate that the host institute confirms its willingness to provide the relevant research facilities required by the candidate in the chosen field of specialization. (v) The certificate of language proficiency (on the UNESCO form) duly completed in duplicate for the language of the country of study (should this be different from the candidate’s mother tongue) issued by an official authority. (vi) A detailed description, one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French, of the research work for which the candidature is being put forward. The research proposal should cover the following points: • Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project’s contribution to the fields listed in paragraph D.1 above; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate the reasons the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host institution would be beneficial to her/his on-going research project. • What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken. • How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research. • Where? The proposed country where research will be undertaken (one to two countries maximum) and the name and address of the host institute. • When? The timeframe explicitly stating the proposed starting date and the suggested duration of research which should be of three months minimum and nine months maximum. • How much? A detailed budget estimate indicating the resources required for the candidate to undertake the proposed research. The amount should be determined according to the proposed duration and place of research (between US$6,000 to US$10,000). The amount should not exceed US$10,000. All figures must be shown in US dollars and must be included on a separate page. The amount indicated should cover, exclusively, the international or domestic travel costs for the approved itinerary and personal subsistence abroad, etc. (The object of this Programme is to provide research fellowships so it is considered that in most cases tuition fees will not apply). Applicants should be realistic in compiling their proposed budgets, and consider that an average of US$1,000/US$1,800 per month for accommodation and meals (including local transportation and incidentals) should not be exceeded. Applications where funds requested are judged to be excessive in relation to the objectives and importance of the project are likely to be considered for a smaller grant. (Note: The following costs are not eligible: computer or equipment purchases; publication costs; attendance at conferences, unless a case can be made that such attendance is an integral part of the research and would make a direct and significant contribution to the outcome of the development of the research project.) UNESCO and Japan attach the greatest importance to originality and quality. Consideration will be given only to well-planned research proposals which demonstrate innovation, imagination and relevance, and which promise to contribute to knowledge in the four specific areas mentioned in paragraph D.1 above. Files which are incomplete or which are received after the deadline for application, as well as applications that do not meet the requirements mentioned above, will not be taken into consideration. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO/JAPAN The Fellowships financed by Japan and administered by UNESCO will consist of the following: • A maximum amount between US$6,000 to US$10,000 will be awarded to selected candidates. The amount, to be paid in two or three instalments, is intended to cover research costs only, and will not be negotiable. • No other costs will be considered and grants will be neither extended nor renewed. SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES A Selection Committee made up of experts in the four areas listed above will make recommendations for the final decision of the Director-General of UNESCO. Applications will be judged on the basis of the merit of each application and of its pertinence to the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme Selected candidates will receive a Letter of Award. Candidates who have not been informed of their selection by 1 September 2012 should consider that their applications have not been approved in the selection process. DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN UNDER THIS PROGRAMME Once the Fellowship has expired, the beneficiaries will be encouraged to disseminate the results of their research. No prior approval of UNESCO will be required for publication of a scholarly paper resulting from research done while benefiting from the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme. However, the Fellow will be asked to acknowledge UNESCO, UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme and the Government of Japan in their paper as having provided support for the Fellowship and the Fellow will be required to send a copy of the report and/or printed article to the Organization for information. It should be emphasized that UNESCO has no obligation to publish the scholarly papers and no allowance will be provided for that purpose. Selected beneficiaries will be required to submit an interim and a final report describing the results of the research undertaken. Fellows will be required to send UNESCO a one-page summary with their report that will be reproduced later in a leaflet and disseminated widely by UNESCO. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1972 will not be considered under the Programme. 4. The selected Fellow must carry out the research under the auspices of an academic supervisor in a host institution. Confirmation of acceptance from the academic supervisor is imperative. 5. Priority attention will be given to: * Women candidatures * Candidates from least developed countries (LDCs) * Palestinian researchers 6. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study/research. 7. Applicants must be in good health (both physically and mentally). Application Procedures: All applications must be submitted with the required documentation on the UNESCO Fellowship Application Form. Each Member State may nominate a maximum of two (2) candidates. (ii) Certified copies of degrees or diplomas (including transcript of grades) in duplicate. Proof of having obtained a Master’s Degree must be included. (iii) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate’s work. (iv) A host institute’s letter of acceptance (i.e. the institute that has accepted the candidate for work should she/he be selected for a Fellowship). This letter of acceptance must indicate that the host institute confirms its willingness to provide the relevant research facilities required by the candidate in the chosen field of specialization. (v) The certificate of language proficiency (on the UNESCO form) duly completed in duplicate for the language of the country of study (should this be different from the candidate’s mother tongue) issued by an official authority. (vi) A detailed description, one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French, of the research work for which the candidature is being put forward. The research proposal should cover the following points: • Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project’s contribution to the fields listed in paragraph D.1 above; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate the reasons the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host institution would be beneficial to her/his on-going research project. • What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken. • How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research. • Where? The proposed country where research will be undertaken (one to two countries maximum) and the name and address of the host institute. • When? The timeframe explicitly stating the proposed starting date and the suggested duration of research which should be of three months minimum and nine months maximum. • How much? A detailed budget estimate indicating the resources required for the candidate to undertake the proposed research. The amount should be determined according to the proposed duration and place of research (between US$6,000 to US$10,000). The amount should not exceed US$10,000. All figures must be shown in US dollars and must be included on a separate page. The amount indicated should cover, exclusively, the international or domestic travel costs for the approved itinerary and personal subsistence abroad, etc. (The object of this Programme is to provide research fellowships so it is considered that in most cases tuition fees will not apply). Applicants should be realistic in compiling their proposed budgets, and consider that an average of US$1,000/US$1,800 per month for accommodation and meals (including local transportation and incidentals) should not be exceeded. Applications where funds requested are judged to be excessive in relation to the objectives and importance of the project are likely to be considered for a smaller grant. (Note: The following costs are not eligible: computer or equipment purchases; publication costs; attendance at conferences, unless a case can be made that such attendance is an integral part of the research and would make a direct and significant contribution to the outcome of the development of the research project.) UNESCO and Japan attach the greatest importance to originality and quality. Consideration will be given only to well-planned research proposals which demonstrate innovation, imagination and relevance, and which promise to contribute to knowledge in the four specific areas mentioned in paragraph D.1 above. Files which are incomplete or which are received after the deadline for application, as well as applications that do not meet the requirements mentioned above, will not be taken into consideration. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO/JAPAN The Fellowships financed by Japan and administered by UNESCO will consist of the following: • A maximum amount between US$6,000 to US$10,000 will be awarded to selected candidates. The amount, to be paid in two or three instalments, is intended to cover research costs only, and will not be negotiable. • No other costs will be considered and grants will be neither extended nor renewed. SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES A Selection Committee made up of experts in the four areas listed above will make recommendations for the final decision of the Director-General of UNESCO. Applications will be judged on the basis of the merit of each application and of its pertinence to the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme Selected candidates will receive a Letter of Award. Candidates who have not been informed of their selection by 1 September 2012 should consider that their applications have not been approved in the selection process. DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION REGARDING THE RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN UNDER THIS PROGRAMME Once the Fellowship has expired, the beneficiaries will be encouraged to disseminate the results of their research. No prior approval of UNESCO will be required for publication of a scholarly paper resulting from research done while benefiting from the UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme. However, the Fellow will be asked to acknowledge UNESCO, UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowship Programme and the Government of Japan in their paper as having provided support for the Fellowship and the Fellow will be required to send a copy of the report and/or printed article to the Organization for information. It should be emphasized that UNESCO has no obligation to publish the scholarly papers and no allowance will be provided for that purpose. L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Postgraduate Scholarship Supplements - Canadian Mentorship Program

Overview

Created in 1998, the international L'Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science program aims to improve the position of women in science by recognizing outstanding women researchers who have contributed to scientific progress, and young women scientists engaged in exemplary and promising projects.

As an extension of this program, L'Oréal Canada Inc., in collaboration with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, offers two postgraduate scholarship supplements to young Canadian women scientists involved in promising research projects.

The objective is to create a network of women who will act as role models to younger generations within the framework of a Canadian mentorship program for girls in science developed by L'Oréal Canada Inc.

Eligibility:

Eligible candidates must:

- have been awarded a NSERC PGS (Postgraduate Scholarship), NSERC CGS (Canada Graduate Scholarship) or a Vanier CGS (Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship) for the 2010-2011 or the 2011-2012 academic year;

- be willing to dedicate to the mentorship program three (3) days of the year during which the award is held;

- have obtained the support of their supervisor;

- be entering or currently enrolled in a doctoral program;

- be involved or will be involved in a research project in the life sciences field, including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology.

UNESCO/ISEDC Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme

Overview

The aim of this fellowships programme is to enhance the capacity-building and human resources development in the area of sustainable and renewable energy sources in developing countries and countries in transition. The training activities in the framework of these fellowships are tenable in specialized institutions in the Russian Federation. The medium of instruction will be Russian. UNESCO will solicit applications from the developing countries and countries in transition.

In line with the strategy and objectives of the approved UNESCO Programme and Budget for 2010-2011(35 C/5) for the Fellowships Programme Section, the UNESCO Category II International Center for Sustainable Energy Development (ISEDC) in Moscow (Russian Federation) is offering twenty (20) fellowships of four weeks (4) duration each.

FIELDS OF STUDY

The candidates may choose to study in the following fields of study, which are aligned with UNESCO’s objectives and programme priorities, as per approved 35 C/5 and in accordance with the decisions made by the Executive Board (161 EX/Decision 3.6.3 and 165 EX/Decision 8.6) :

(a) Energy and sustainable development;

(b) Ecological management of energy resources;

(c) Renewable energy;

(d) Sustainable and renewable energy power generation.

DURATION

One month duration: from October to November 2011.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

(a) Holder of at least a BSc degree or BA in Economics;

(b) Proficient in the Russian language;

(c) Not more than 45 years of age;

(d) Be in good health, both mentally and physically.

PROCEDURES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF APPLICATIONS (a) All applications should be endorsed by the National Commission for UNESCO and must be duly completed in English or French with the following attachments in DUPLICATE: • The prescribed UNESCO fellowship application form; • Six photographs; • Certified photocopies of Diplomas • Certificate of Russian Language proficiency – minimum of 500 hours of language training (if Russian is not the mother tongue or was the language of instruction for some years of study); • Subsequently, for those who have been selected, the UNESCO medical examination form duly completed by a recognized physician (not more than four months before the actual date of studies). The prescribed form of which will be sent along with the letter of award. Expenses incurred in the constitution of the medical dossiers will not be reimbursed. (b) Files which are incomplete or received after the deadline for the submission of applications and candidatures, and do not fulfil the requirements mentioned above, will not be considered. (c) Each invited Member State is requested to nominate not more than two (2) candidates. SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES (a) The final selection of beneficiaries lies with ISEDC. (b) The National Commission of selected fellows will be duly informed by UNESCO and the letter of award will immediately follow. (c) UNESCO will authorize the departure of beneficiaries who have completely complied with the requirements stipulated in the letter of award. (d) Candidates not informed of their selection by 1st September 2011 should consider that their applications have not been approved. FACILITIES OFFERED BY ISEDC i) Beneficiaries will be exempt of paying tuition fees for the entire duration of studies/training; ii) Fellows will undertake studies/training under the supervision of an advisor or study director that will be provided by the host institution; iii) The donor Government will pay stipends to beneficiaries on a monthly basis, in local currency. The stipend amounting to nine hundred (900) US dollars is intended to cover living expenses such as accommodation, meals, pocket expenses, and incidentals. The donor will determine the amount of the stipend to be granted to beneficiaries; iv) ISEDC will assist in obtaining modest housing for the fellows. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO (a) UNESCO will cover the cost of the round-trip international travel at the most economical rate and the most direct flight. (b) UNESCO will pay a one-time travel allowance amounting to US$100 (one hundred US dollars) prior to the fellows’ departure for the Russian Federation. (c) Health insurance. To avail of this entitlement, beneficiaries should be declared medically fit by the UNESCO Medical Service that examines the complete medical dossiers. OTHER CONDITIONS (a) No provisions can be made to finance or lodge the fellows’ family members. (b) Beneficiaries will be required to submit to UNESCO a short progress report co-signed with the academic supervisor at the end of the first month and a final report upon termination of the fellowship. These reports could be written in English or in French and copies of which will be furnished to ISEDC. VISA Selected fellows from countries where there are Russian Federation Embassies or Consulates must obtain their entry visa in their country prior to their departure. Fellows from countries where no such embassy/consulate exists must secure their visa through the nearest country where the Embassy or Consulate of the Russian Federation can be found. UNESCO and ISEDC provide no allowance to defray passport and visa expenses. UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science

Overview

The UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science is an international distinction created by UNESCO in 1951 following a donation from Mr Bijoyanand Patnaik, Founder and President of the Kalinga Foundation Trust in India.

The purpose of the Prize is to reward the efforts of a person who has had a distinguished career as a writer, editor, lecturer, radio/television programme director or film producer, which has enabled him/her to help interpret science, research and technology to the public. He/she is expected to be knowledgeable of the role of science, technology and general research in the improvement of the public welfare, the enrichment of the cultural heritage of nations and the solutions to the problems of humanity. The objective of the Prize is in conformity with UNESCO’s policies and is related to the Programme on the popularization of science. Many past Prize winners have been scientists in their own right, while others have been trained in journalism or have been educators or writers.

Candidates shall have made a significant contribution to the popularization of science. The Prize may be conferred only upon individuals. A work that has been produced by two or three persons shall not be considered.

The laureate will also be offered the Kalinga Chair established by the Government of India (Department of Science and Technology) which comprises a certificate and cash award of US$ 5,000. He/she will be invited to travel to India (travel and lodgings will be funded by the Government of India), for a two to four week period to interact with scientists and science communicators. He/she will be provided with appropriate facilities to familiarize him/herself with Indian life and culture, Indian research and educational institutions, and the development of India’s industry and economy. He/she will also be invited to visit Indian universities and attend meetings within India’s scientific societies, particularly those of the Indian Science Congress Association. While in India, the recipient will be asked to deliver lectures in English and to take part in meetings in order to present recent progress in science and technology as well as the social, cultural and educational impacts of modern science. Thus, he/she should preferably be proficient in English.

Who may apply?

• Writers, editors, lecturers, radio/television programme directors or film producers who have devoted their career to interpreting science, research and technology for the general public.
• The applicant does not need to have a science degree.
• This prize does not reward research.
• This prize does not reward formal teaching (in a school/university), nor curriculum development for the formal learning sector.
• Candidates are submitted by the government through the country’s National Commission for UNESCO.
• Each National Commission for UNESCO shall propose a candidate on the basis of recommendations from: national associations for the advancement of science or other science associations, and/or national associations of science writers or scientific journalists.
• Each Member State may propose a single candidature consisting of one individual only.
• Candidatures sent directly to UNESCO by individuals will not be accepted.

Do not apply directly to UNESCO; contact your country's National Commission for UNESCO to express your interest in being your country’s candidate for this prize.

If you belong to a national association for the advancement of science or any other science association, including science writers or scientific journalists, inform them of your interest in applying for this prize.

With a view to promoting human resource capacities in the developing countries and to enhancing international understanding and friendship among nations and the UNESCO Chair for Science, Technology and Engineering Education at the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, are placing at the disposal of UNESCO twenty-two (22) fellowships of six (6) months duration starting on 1st October 2011 for the benefit of Member States listed in Annex I. (i) Free tuition;
(ii) Monthly allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys (approximatively US$ 450) corresponding to the salary of a local junior research fellow. Thus, all living expenses in Poland are to be borne by the fellows with this allowance; and;
(iii) An installation allowance of 1350 PLN zlotys to be paid upon arrival.

No provision to finance or lodge family members is made.

At the end of the research studies, the beneficiaries will receive a certificate attesting to their attendance at the host institution.

D. FACILITIES OFFERED BY UNESCO

(i) International travel expenses: (at the most economical rate) from the beneficiary’s country to Poland and return will be covered by UNESCO under its Regular Programme Budget.

(ii) Health insurance for fellowship beneficiaries who are declared medically fit: UNESCO fellowship holders may be covered by a special accident/ health insurance policy, taken out by the Organization for the duration of the fellowship. The costs of the health insurance is subscribed to and covered by UNESCO* on behalf of the fellows.

* ONLY THE TWO SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO SEND TO THE FELLOWHIPS PROGRAMME SECTION A COMPLETE MEDICAL DOSSIER, THE PRESCRIBED FORM OF WHICH WILL BE SENT ALONG WITH THE LETTER OF AWARD.

E. VISA

Fellows, from countries where Polish Embassies or Consulates exit, will have to obtain their entry visa to the country of study prior to their departure. Fellows, from countries where no such Embassy or Consulate exists, must secure their visa through the nearest Embassy of the Republic of Poland.

UNESCO and the Government of the Republic of Poland provide no allowance to defray passport and visa expenses. Selected beneficiaries will have to secure their own visas themselves.

F. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FILES

One candidature per invited Member State. Original applications in duplicate must be channelled through the National Commission for UNESCO of the candidate’s country and Communicated to Mr. Ali Zaid, Chief, Fellowships Programme Section, by 30 April 2011 at the latest. An advance copy of the application may be sent by fax (33.1) 45.68.55.03. Applications should have imperatively the following attachments in DUPLICATE:

(i) UNESCO fellowships application forms, duly completed in English;
(ii) Two photographs attached to the applications (4x6 cm);
(iii) Certified copies (in English) of Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree obtained; and,
(iv) The UNESCO certificates of language knowledge, duly completed by a relevant authority, if the mother tongue of the candidate is not English.

Deadline: 30 April 2011 at the latest

IMPORTANT

It is the National authority’s responsibility to ensure that all candidates are duly informed of the above conditions prior to the submission of applications.

Files which are incomplete or which are received after the deadline as well as candidatures that do not fulfil the requirements will not be taken into consideration.

Only the selected candidates will receive a letter through their respective National Commissions for UNESCO.

UNESCO-L'OREAL International Fellowships Programme for Young Women in Life Sciences

Overview

Within the framework of the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Scheme, a joint programme has been launched with the L’ORÉAL Corporate Foundation with a view to promoting the contribution of young women - from all over the world – in research developments in the field of life sciences.

The UNESCO-L’ORÉAL fellowships scheme focuses on UNESCO’s premise that people are the world’s greatest resource and that innovation and excellence, especially among the young women community, deserve to be supported and encouraged through the concerted efforts of the international community. The award of the fellowships constitutes a key strategy through which impetus is being given to the enhancement of the role of women in devising scientific solutions to problems confronting humankind in the twenty-first century.

TARGET GROUP

The UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowships are designed to identify and reward fifteen deserving, committed and talented young women scientists, from all over the world, active in the field of life sciences. With a view to ensuring that a balanced geographical representation is made, a maximum of three young women, from each of the five geo-cultural regions of the world, will be awarded fellowships.

Candidates must already be engaged in pursuing research at the doctoral or post-doctoral level in one or allied fields of life sciences including biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and physiology. Projects involving animal models (i.e. experimentation using vertebrate laboratory animals) are rejected, and proposals in the area of cosmetics research are NOT encouraged; preference is given to non cosmetic research.

Special attention will be given to candidatures from the Least Developed Countries(LDCs).

ELIGIBILITY Applicants (maximum four from each applying National Commission) must meet the following general criteria: 1. The National Commission must endorse all applications. UNESCO cannot entertain applications from individuals. 2. Candidates must be no more than 35 years old. Thus, applicants born before 1 January 1977 will not be considered under this programme. 3. Preference will be given to candidates already possessing at the time of application a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in the field of the life sciences. However, candidatures from students pursuing studies/research leading to a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) will also be entertained. 4. Only candidates with the necessary qualifications, who demonstrate outstanding intellectual promise and personal qualities, will be considered under this programme. 5. Candidates must be proficient in reading and writing the language of instruction in the proposed country of study. 6. Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally. 7. Candidates may not be in receipt of another fellowship/grant for the project or for the period covered by the fellowship application. If the candidate receives another award, scholarship or fellowship for the proposed research project, she should inform UNESCO immediately to verify whether her application is still valid. CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATION: 1. Field of study: Life Sciences 2. Closing date for receipt of applications: 30 June 2011 3. The initial fellowship is for a maximum period of 12 months, for a maximum sum of $20,000. The fellowship can be extended for up to 12 additional months with up to $20,000 additional funding upon request of the Fellow and validation of the Selection Committee. 4. Duration of stay in the host country/laboratory: At least half of the period of the fellowship must be undertaken abroad.. All fellows are required to complete the research project in her own country for a minimum of two months. 5. Possible date of commencing the project: Any time between 1 March 2012 & 1 March 2013 6. Applications for extension may only be made for the project for which the original fellowship was granted. To request an extension and additional funding, the following documents should be submitted 3 months before the ending date of the fellowship: i. Three letters of recommendation issued by (a) the host institution, (b) the research supervisors at the host institution, and (c) the academic institution/laboratory in the fellow’s home country. ii. A research report on progress to date on the project and a proposal justifying the need for an extension with details of the work to be done. iii. A budget estimate specifying how the second grant will be utilized. 7. Upon termination of the fellowship, the beneficiary must agree to return to her country so that the knowledge acquired may be put to good use in local research and training programmes. THE RESEARCH PROJECT : The research proposal should cover the following points: • Why? The concrete nature of the proposed project’s contribution to the life sciences; its innovative, original aspects; and the scope and purpose of the research project. The candidate should demonstrate that the reasons of the theoretical and practical knowledge or training acquired at the host laboratory would be beneficial to her on-going research project. • What? The expected results or impact of the research project being undertaken. • How? Describe the proposed arrangements for conducting the research. • Where?The proposed country, where research will be undertaken and the name and address of the host institute/laboratory. • When?The time-framework explicitly stating the proposed starting date and the suggested duration of research which should be of twelve months maximum. Because the possibility for extension exists, it would be useful also to give an indication of further development of the project beyond the 1-year time frame. • How much?A detailed budget estimate indicating the resources required for the candidate to undertake the proposed research. The amount should not exceed USD20,000. All figures must be shown in US dollars and must be stated on a separate page. The total amount indicated should cover, exclusively, the international or domestic travel costs for the proposed itinerary and tuition fees, if any, including personal subsistence abroad, etc. Applicants should be realistic in compiling their estimated budgets, and consider that an average of USD1500 per month for accommodation and meals (including local transportation and incidentals) should not be exceeded. Applications where funds requested are judged to be excessive in relation to the objectives and importance of the project are likely to be considered for a smaller grant. The following costs are not eligible: computer or equipment purchases; publication costs; attendance at conferences, unless a case can be made that such attendance is an integral part of the research and would make a direct and significant contribution to the outcome of the development of life sciences. APPLICATION PROCEDURES: All applications must be submitted with the required documentation on the prescribed and enclosed application forms. Each Member State may nominate up to a maximum of four candidatures. It is the National Commission’s responsibility to select candidates that it wishes to submit to UNESCO. The National Commission is also invited to seek the cooperation of the local scientific community to ensure high standard candidatures that will then have more chances of being selected. The application(s) should reach the Fellowships Programme Section (ERC/RPO/FEL), UNESCO (7, Place de Fontenoy 75352 Paris 07P) before 30 June 2011. Proof either of having obtained a Ph.D. degree or of being in the process of studying for a Ph.D. degree must be included. d) A list of publications, if any. e) A letter of recommendation from someone familiar with the candidate’s work. f) A host institute’s letter of acceptance (i.e. the institute that has accepted the candidate for work should she be selected for a fellowship). This letter of acceptance must indicate the name of the academic supervisor, the date and duration, and the host institute’s willingness to provide the relevant training facilities required by the candidate in the chosen field of specialization. g) The certificate of language proficiency (on UNESCO form) duly completed in duplicate for the language of the country of study (should this be different from the candidate’s mother tongue) and signed by the competent authority. h) Detailed proposal for the research project: one to two page(s) (maximum), in either English or French. UNESCO-L’ORÉAL INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP The UNESCO-L’Oréal International Fellowships include the following: - The financial contribution specific previously. - Participation in the Fellowship Training Programme. - Round-trip travel for the selected beneficiaries from their country of residence to attend For Women in Science week in Paris, France, (date not yet determined) to attend an awards ceremony (sine qua non condition for the award of the fellowship). - Lodging and pocket money during the stay in Paris for For Women in Science Week and the Fellowship Ceremony. - A certificate attesting to the special award. SELECTION OF BENEFICIARIES A special Selection Committee made up of representatives of UNESCO, the L’ORÉAL Foundation, and Life Sciences research community or institutions will make the selection of the candidates. The International Basic Science Programme (IBSP) will be also consulted during the selection process. A member of the IBSP may take part in the selection. UNESCO and the L’ORÉAL Foundation allocate the greatest importance to originality and quality. Consideration will be given only to well-structured projects that demonstrate innovation, creativity and relevance, and which are likely to contribute to enhance knowledge in life sciences.
