The IWC Water Leader Scholarships offer full and partial tuition scholarships for Australian citizens, permanent residents and international applicants for the Master of Integrated Water Management program.

Master of Integrated Water Management

The Master of Integrated Water Management is custom-designed by leading practitioners and academics from a range of disciplines from International WaterCentre (IWC) member universities.

The programs equip students with the integration, leadership, managerial and technical skills to become part of an elite group of water leaders with sustainable and holistic solutions to global water and climate change challenges.

Scholarship value

Full-tuition fees* for full-time or part-time/distance** IWC Master of Integrated Water Management program.

Partial-tuition fees* for full-time or part-time/distance** IWC Master of Integrated Water Management program. *There is only one scholarship application. The selection committee will make a decision as to which recipients will receive a full or partial tuition scholarship.

** Part-time/distance study option in 2011 is available only to Australian/NZ citizens and permanent residents.

The scholarship does not include:
Travel, accommodation allowance, field work, living costs. These costs will be the responsibility of successful recipients.


Entry requirements

A completed undergraduate degree in a related field of study from an internationally-recognised institution.

Demonstrated English language proficiency
Two years practical experience in a related field is preferred but not required.

Scholarship selection criteria

Commitment to the whole-of-water cycle, integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to water management.

Leadership qualities: As demonstrated by professional, educational, community and other achievements. Leadership qualities include collaboration and team work, flexibility, initiative, communication skills, integrity and vision.

Overview

The Integration of Immigrants Masterate Scholarship is offered to encourage research on international migration at Massey University. Specifically, it is intended that the applicant's thesis focus on one of these subject areas: ethnic precincts; lifestyle migration or migrant networks and on migrants from one or more of the following source countries: China, Korea, India, the United Kingdom or South Africa.

Eligible Candidates

1. New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residents
2. Enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time for the thesis research component of their Masters Degree at Massey University
3. A full-time candidate will be expected to work 40 - 50 hours per week on their Masterate qualification

Term:

The Integration of Immigrants Masterate scholarship shall be tenable at Massey University for a maximum period of 12 months devoted to full-time research.

New Zealand: Socio-Technical PhD Scholarship Opportunity at Massey University

Overview

This PhD scholarship is based on a Grant. It is for tuition plus a full stipend (NZ$24,000) at Massey University, Albany, Auckland, New Zealand for one year, from August 2010 to July 2011, plus tuition and half stipend (NZ$12,000) for the second year with an academic work supplement. Tuition support for the third year is normal, but you may need other stipend support to finish in year 3, or go part time.

You will be working in the Institute of Information and Mathematical Sciences, with four other students in the Socio-Technical group. The project title is:
OKES: An Open Knowledge Exchange System to Support Ad-hoc Unconferences

It will develop a web-based knowledge exchange system (KES) based on socio-technical principles to support ad-hoc conferences, such as Foo and Bar camp "unconferences" which currently mainly use Twitter and Wikis. The system design details are discussed in this paper:

The international team supporting this project includes a NZ Masters student programmer and two US students. Applicants must have completed a first class Masters degree, be competent programmers, and able to start in Auckland in August, 2010. You need a GPA of 7.0 or better on a 9 point scale, an A average or better in graduate level papers. A GRE score is desirable. Your English language capability must also be evident by an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, with no band less than 6.0.

The CEI Fellowship for Writers in Residence - The Central European Initiative (CEI)

Overview

The CEI Fellowship for Writers in Residence is an award aimed at encouraging cross-border cooperation and promotion in the field of literature for young writers from Central European countries not yet part of the European Union. The fellowship is endowed with a cash award of EUR 5,000 for a three-month stay in any of the Central European Initiative Member States, selected by the candidate. The fellowship winner will be guest of the 25th Vilenica International Literary Festival which will take place from 1 to 5 September 2010 at various locations in Slovenia. At the opening of the festival the fellowship winner will be officially announced and presented at one of the festival events. The candidate is eligible for the fellowship from 1 September 2010 till 1 September 2011. Within 60 days after completion of the residency the candidate must submit a written report.

The Central European Initiative (CEI) is composed of 18 Member States: Albania, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine. They embrace a territory of 2.4 million square kilometres and a population of nearly 250 million. The CEI was the first regional co-operation forum on the political map of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and has among all regional groupings the longest tradition and covers the largest area. It was established in 1989 by Austria, Italy, Hungary and Yugoslavia with the aim of establishing a platform of mutual political, economic, scientific and cultural co-operation called Quadrangular Co-operation. From its very inception the CEI has promoted cohesion and solidarity among its Member States. In recent years it has emerged as one of the foremost platforms for regional co-operation. The Slovene Writers’ Association produces and carries out contemporary public programmes in the field of literature. With a wide array of programmes and activities, it represents the most active organisation and the main centre of literary activity in Slovenia. The role of principal operator of public programmes in literature is also recognised by the Ministry of Culture with its active support and regular financing. The beginnings of the association can be traced back to 1872, when authors started to organise, but it took the current name in 1968. It was presided by distinguished Slovene writers. The Vilenica International Literary Festival, a gathering of poets, prose writers, playwrights and essayists, but also translators, publishers, editors and critics from Central Europe and beyond is organised by the Slovene Writers’ Association in collaboration with the Cultural Society Vilenica from Sežana. Conditions of entry

Applicants eligible for the fellowship are writers from all genres under 35 (born after 1975) from CEI Member States which are not part of the European Union (Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine).

USA: Women PeaceMakers - the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ)

Overview

Four peacemakers are selected each year to participate in an eight-week residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ), located on the University of San Diego campus in San Diego, California. The program pairs each peacemaker with a Peace Writer and a documentary film team to document her story and best practices. Selected candidates give presentations on their work both at the IPJ and in the San Diego community and have opportunities to exchange ideas and approaches to peacemaking and justice, increasing their capacity to participate in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts and in post-conflict decision-making.

Qualifications

This is a program open to women who have been involved in either official or unofficial peace processes and who may be working at the grassroots, national or international level. We select women who have been active in efforts to secure a just peace, namely, through conflict resolution and civil society participation that is inclusive and honors human rights. Women PeaceMakers must:

•Have experience working directly in peacemaking and/or human rights efforts at a grassroots, national or international level.
•Speak sufficient English to relate personal experiences. Written English is not necessary.
•Be in a position to apply what is learned and/or to share with others at the conclusion of the residency program.

Documentation

Women PeaceMakers collaborate with Peace Writers and a film team to document personal stories through writing, video and audio recording.


Public Forums

Women PeaceMakers share their experiences of peacemaking and human rights advocacy with the local community through classroom presentations, visits to local governmental and nongovernmental organizations, small group discussions and other public engagements. Each Woman PeaceMaker participates in a formal presentation, in which her individual story is highlighted, as well as a group panel discussion. These talks are open to the general public.

Rest and Reflection

The program seeks to create a space for peacemakers to renew personal commitments to their work and to take time to reflect in a safe and nurturing environment that promotes new learning and an authentic exchange of ideas.

Program Cost

There is no cost for participation in the Women PeaceMakers Program. Airfare, visa expenses, lodging and health insurance are covered by the program. Peacemakers receive a stipend during their residency to cover living expenses and incidentals.

Lodging

Housing is provided at the Casa de la Paz, "The House of Peace," on the campus of the University of San Diego. The Casa de la Paz is a private residence adjacent to the Institute for Peace & Justice that overlooks Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Invited Women PeaceMakers have the opportunity to rest and reflect in this beautiful, peaceful and supportive setting.

The European Regional Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democracy in South

Overview

The European Regional Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democracy in South East Europe is an intensive one-year Master programme established through the joint efforts of the participating universities and coordinated by the Universities of Sarajevo and Bologna. At present it is in its ninth year of implementation. The Programme is co-financed by the European Commission and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Master's Programme is structured in three terms/two semesters - I) November 2010 - June 2011: Lecturing period at the University of Sarajevo (semester I); II) June - July 2011: Internship work across South East Europe and III) September - October 2011: Master's Theses writing-up period at the University of Bologna (semester II). The teaching activities involve renowned Faculty members coming from more than 25 European and other countries. Internships take place at various regional NGOs, IGOs, think-tanks and research institutes dealing with issues of human rights and democracy in South East Europe. The third term is hosted by the University of Bologna Residential Centers in Italy.

Each academic year the Programme enrolls 30 students from the countries of South East Europe and the European Union. The university degree of the applicants must be earned during studies lasting either 4 or 5 years within the former undergraduate studies provisions, or 5 years (3+2) within I and II cycle studies provisions in accordance with the Bologna process.

Cuban Undergraduate Scholarships 2010 for Sri Lankans

Applications are invited from eligible Sri Lankan Students for the award of 5 Undergraduate Scholarships in Medicine offered by the Republic of Cuba for the year 2010.

01. General Eligibility requirements:-

(a) Should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
(b) Age should be less than 25 years on 03.05.2010
(c) Should have passed the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka with subjects relevant to the field applicant intends to apply.
(d) Should possess a high proficiency in English.
(e) Should be in good health and ready to live in Cuba during the period of study.
(f) Should not be employees under the Government or a statutory body.
(g) Should not be a student already registered or following an undergraduate course at any University or a full time course of study in a state sector Higher Educational Institution in Sri Lanka.

(a) Government of Cuba will pay for the Education of the Scholar, Apprentice Studies, Lodging, Food and Medical Care.
(b) The cost of air ticket to Cuba and back should be borne by the students. However the Ministry will bear the cost of the air ticket in case of students from Samurdhi recipient families or deserving students of low income families on case by case basis.

Note: Selected candidates must arrive in Cuba between 23rd & 30th August 2010 in order to do the preparatory studies in Spanish Language.

6. Nominations & Final Selections

(a) Nominations will be made through an interview after short listing of applications received as per this Notification. These nominations will be sent to the relevant Selection Authority of the Republic of Cuba through the Embassy in Colombo.
(b) The originals of following documents should be submitted at the Interview.

Certificate of the G.C.E. O/L Examination
Certificate of the G.C.E. A/L Examination (including the Z Score)
Birth Certificate
National Identity Card/ Postal Identity Card or valid Passport
Evidence for extra curricular activities

(c) The final selections will be made by the Republic of Cuba accordingly. Therefore, candidate should not treat nomination for the scholarship as an acceptance for an award.

USA: World Summit Youth Award: A global contest for best practice to support a better world

Overview

The WSYA selects and promotes best practice in e-Content and technological creativity, demonstrates young people’s potential to create outstanding digital contents and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together in the efforts to reduce poverty and hunger, and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation.

WSYA is therefore both a showcase to the world for young e-content creators, journalists and writers, application designers, technologists and as well as a contribution on a global scale to adressing poverty, protecting the environment, sharing knowledge and empowering young people.

The WSYA is promoted in all UN member states through the networks of the World Summit Award (WSA) the UN Global Alliance for ICT, other participating UN Organisations and Agencies, governments and NGOs, youth organisations and all those committed to making a real difference in the achievement of the MDGs.

The WSYA will be organised in 2010 as a follow up activity of the World Summit on Information Society and its action plan towards the year 2015 and with a special focus on the MDG Review of the heads of state and government in September 2010.

It will be conducted in five plus one categories. The finalists and category winners will be invited to the WSA Events in September 2010 in New York City and at the UN Headquarters.


CONTEXT – A young world with a challenging future

Youth under the age of 30 are a majority of the world’s population. If accessible and affordable, they use electronic technologies for communication and information as an integral part of their way of living. These technologies are interactive, multimedia-based, fast, instant and potentially global.

The problems addressed by the MDGs are those issues young people will have to address if the earth should become a better place and if human kind should have a chance to survive without major catastrophes and cataclysms.

Youth are often portrayed in mass media as apathetic, distrustful or angry. The WSYA addresses another world of youth – one with technological expertise, dynamic energy, journalistic zest and innovation in applications. Whether it is young leadership in new development projects, students eager to study, teens at the cutting edge of social change, teenagers building their relationships by instant messaging, or youth running telecentres or media blogs to bridge the rural digital divide – young people have made ICT their own.

MISSION

The World Summit Youth Awards mission is to empower youth by creating digital opportunity. In spite of their technological expertise, young people remain marginalized, unemployed and lacking voice in the decisions that affect them each day. We believe that if youth are given a space to showcase their skills, ideas and projects, they will be empowered as agents for social change and creativity. In addition, the networking and skill-sharing between award winners and WSIS delegates can open new doors to the information society.

WSYA Voluteer Team is based at the International Centre for New Media (ICNM), an independent non-profit organisation based in Salzburg, Austria.
WSYA GOALS – e-Contents for Change

- The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) wishes to showcase the skills, ideas and projects of young people to create e-Contents and applications which address the MDGs.
- The WSYA will network best-practices and allow idea- and skill-sharing between the best and most innovative content creators and producers, writers, application developers and designers.
- The WSYA will celebrate the achievements in local content creation and offer the projects to UN for the support of the MDGs
