International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH) Postdoctoral Fellowship

Overview

UNU-IIGH is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship in support of its postgraduate education programme. This programme serves as a complement to the Ph.D. Fellowship Programme. We are targeting scholars from various countries especially from the developing region of the world with opportunities based on gender equity.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme targets five fellowship positions each year for a period of twelve months. The Fellowship Programme has four core aims:

  1. young scholars conduct research at a postdoctoral level, particularly those from developing countries
  2. scholars participate in and contribute to the research activities of UNU-IIGH
  3. scholars interact with Malaysians and provide a conduit between the host country, their home country, developing country researcher and the UN system.
  4. provide UNU-IIGH and its academic community with an opportunity to benefit from the diverse knowledge, background, and experience

Research proposals should relate clearly to one of the above current research areas of UNU-IIGH.

Responsibilities

Each fellow is expected to help strengthen the intellectual capacity of UNU-IIGH and enhance the spirit of the academic community. Under the supervision and general direction of the Programme/Research Fellow, each fellow will work on specific research projects, or initiatives, and may be responsible for activities in one or more issue areas.

Responsibilities may include: general research and writing activities, contributing to the development of research agendas, assisting in the definition of methodologies and advanced research approaches, assisting in the design and development of course materials, developing and managing scientific networks, organizing conferences and seminars, developing promotional materials, formulating funding proposals, preparation and presentation of research within the UNU-IIGH community, contribution to the UNU-IIGH Working Paper Series, and preparation of other possible in-house and external publications.





Eligibility


Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. (or at least successfully defended his/her Ph.D. thesis) in an area broadly associated with the UNU-IIGH thematic directions described above prior to 18th June 2011 the application deadline. Language proficiency in English is essential. Applicants from developing countries and women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Conditions

The period of the Postdoctoral Fellowship is twelve months. Fellows will be provided with their own desk within a dedicated study area in the Institute, a networked PC, and full Internet access.

The fellowship provides for a monthly stipend of USD3,000. Eligibility for a second 12-month appointment may be considered based on the Fellow’s performance.

Accommodation

Postdoctoral Fellows will be responsible to look their own accommodation. Limited assistance to locate suitable accommodation maybe acquired from the Institute.

Travel Arrangement

UNU-IIGH provides fellows with return air tickets between his/her country of residence and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Admission Procedures

Interested applicants should submit their applications, preferably by email postdoc_application@unu.edu or mail as per below address, and must include the following documents in English or with English translation:

i. Completed and signed United Nations University Personal History form (P-11) downloadable from United Nations University website at www.unu.edu/employment. Please avoid using similar forms provided by other United Nations organizations;

ix. Certified copies of academic transcripts (Master’s and Ph.D. courses if applicable) and a copy of the doctoral degree certificate.

x. Two publication samples (if unavailable, please send two chapters from your dissertation).

xi. Two original supporting letters of reference (Please ensure the letter is signed by the referees.).

xii. Evidence of English Language proficiency (only required if PhD. dissertation was not submitted in English) eg. TOEFL score, certificate of proficiency.

Note: When the document is in another language, please be sure to attach an English translation.

Application Deadline

The deadline for applications for the fellowship is 18th June 2011

Starting Dates

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme begins on 1st August 2011 and selected fellows are required to be in Kuala Lumpur by this date.
