New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship

Overview

Universities New Zealand has invited the CSC to nominate eight candidates for Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study in New Zealand starting in February 2012. (Please note that Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s study in New Zealand are no longer available.)

The following universities in New Zealand are offering to fund one Commonwealth Scholarship each at varying values:

Please note the terms and conditions for levels of funding offered by each university. More information on eligible subjects and supervisors is available on individual university websites.

Please note that participation in this scholarship scheme is the choice of the university and that a university may withdraw at any time. The granting of a scholarship under this programme is at the discretion of the university.

Eligibility
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United Kingdom (applicants with dual New Zealand/British nationality are ineligible)
  • Applicants must have at least an Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree (by the time of taking up an award)
  • Applicants are expected to have thoroughly researched the research programmes and capabilities of their preferred universities in New Zealand and must demonstrate that they have made contact with and can show some degree of support from a potential doctoral supervisor. An indication that an applicant has received an offer of a place at their preferred New Zealand university would assist the assessment process, but is not mandatory.

How to apply

Please read the rules and regulations supplied by Universities New Zealand before starting your application – these notes contain important information on the application process.

Each applicant must submit:

  • one original application form and four copies (five in total)
  • five copies of a letter or email from your prospective supervisor in New Zealand offering support for your application
  • five certified copies of any undergraduate or postgraduate transcripts. (It is very important that these list the subjects passed and the grades of pass in each subject; academic records excluding such information cannot be assessed by the universities.) Those candidates who have yet to graduate should submit five copies of a letter from the university at which they are currently registered giving the details of their grades so far
  • five copies of a covering letter, no longer than two sides of A4, setting out why you should receive a Commonwealth Scholarship, taking note of the selection criteria outlined at the front of the application form and stating why you wish to study in New Zealand
  • one copy of a certified birth certificate, and, if necessary, other proof of UK citizenship attached to the original application
  • Reports from your three referees can be submitted direct to the CSC at the address below. The reports should be submitted on the supporting statement form, which should also include a summary of your plan of study. (This form is an interactive PDF which can be downloaded and completed.)

All applications must be sent in hard copy with supporting documents to:

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (MB)
c/o The Association of Commonwealth Universities
Woburn House
20-24 Tavistock Square
London
WC1H 9HF

The closing date for receipt of applications is 24 June 2011.
