IE - Brown International Teaching Fellowship

Overview

IE University and Brown University are pleased to invite candidates from the humanities to apply for the International Teaching Fellowship (ITF) for the academic year 2012-13. The ITF provides the opportunity to teach in Spain at IE University in Segovia, Spain as a fellow of the School of Arts and Humanities. The fellow will also be affiliated with the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown University. The fellowship offers the opportunity to develop and implement innovative curricula in one of Europe’s foremost professional degree-granting institutions while also providing time for research and career development.

IE University is the undergraduate affiliate institution of IE Business School, based in Madrid. The IE International MBA is regularly ranked in the top-ten worldwide and its specialized Masters programs are recognized globally. The undergraduate program, launched in 2009, has been designed to bring the excellence of the graduate school to undergraduate teaching. IE’s undergraduate student body is extremely diverse, with no single dominant national or linguistic group.

IE University offers a unique liberal arts model of education in the heart of Europe, with an emphasis on small class sizes and student-faculty exchange. The School of Arts and Humanities is at the very heart of IE's mission, as the courses it offers form part of all the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University.

In addition to the faculty life found within the University, fellows may also profit from IE’s connections to the wider academic environment in Madrid, including important libraries (e.g. Biblioteca Nacional), leading museums (e.g. Thyssen, Prado), Foundations (e.g. Juan March), Research Centres (e.g. CSIC), and neighbouring Universities (e.g. Universidad Complutense).

TEACHING
Fellows will join the IE claustro (faculty) to teach the equivalent of two courses in a blended seminar/lecture format. The course curriculum should reflect the interests and strength of the fellow, as well as the pedagogical aims of IE´s undergraduate program; curricula will be developed in collaboration with the IE School of Arts and Humanities. Because of the diverse nature of IE’s degree programs, fellows will likely have the opportunity to teach either two standard, semester-length undergraduate courses, or one such class combined with short, structured courses in the graduate program. In total, the fellow will be responsible for 130 contact hours and no more than two curricula. The language of instruction is English and knowledge of Spanish is not required. ELIGIBILITY
The IE-Brown International Teaching Fellowship is a post-doctoral position open to all candidates from the humanities who:

expect to receive the Ph.D. from Brown University in 2012 or have received the Ph.D. from Brown University in the last 3 years, i.e. no earlier than May 2009; or
who have received their Ph.D. from other institutions but currently hold a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown University.

Applicants may be from any area of the Humanities, including, but not limited to, history, philosophy, modern languages, East Asian studies, comparative literature, classics, Islamic studies, art history, anthropology, African American studies, music, and Judaic studies. For doctoral candidates, applicants should expect to have received the Ph.D. by September 1, 2012.

TERMS
The terms of the fellowship are as follows:

The fellowship stipend is €40.000 and lasts for a term of eleven months, from September 1, 2012 – July 31, 2013.
The fellow will be expected to be resident in either Madrid or Segovia, Spain for at least 10 months of the fellowship’s term.
The fellow may, at his/her discretion, spend up to one month at the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown University.
The fellow will be responsible for the design and implementation of one or two courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
The fellow will be expected to provide 130 contact teaching hours over the term of the fellowship.
The fellow will be supported with the academic resources of both IE and Brown Universities. While in residence at each, the fellow will be expected to participate in and contribute to the academic and intellectual activities offered by the School of Arts and Humanities at IE and the Cogut Center for the Humanities at Brown.
The fellowship is renewable for a second year, at the discretion of the IE School of Arts and Humanities.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The deadline for application is January 15, 2012.

Applications must include:

A full CV, including relevant teaching experience.
A statement of teaching philosophy.
A description of existing and/or future academic research.
A sample (c. 20 pages) of academic work (e.g. books, articles, dissertation chapter).
One or two sample course syllabi.

In addition, applicants will need to submit directly to IE three (3) letters of recommendation. Where possible, these should include support for the candidate’s pedagogical skills.

Candidates are free to include any additional material they feel is germane to their applications.
