Erasmus Mundus (FAME) Scholarships

Overview

The Erasmus Mundus FAME Masters course provides a two-year education programme in Advanced Materials Science within 7 universities of 4 European countries (Germany, France,
Belgium and Portugal) that host world-renowned leading research laboratories in the field of Advanced Materials Science. Mandatory and optional courses are integrated and taught by distinguished professors and researchers, who already interact closely through the European Research Network of Excellence FAME, launched in October 2004. The Master Course ensures an intensive and innovative training for 15 non-EC students + 25 European students. This Master allows applying for PhD programmes in Europe and/or working as scientist or R&D engineer in industry.


The FAME Erasmus Mundus Master of Science degree in Functionalized Advanced Materials and Engineering (FAME) is specialized in :

Hybrid Materials and Ceramics
Materials for Micro- and Nanotechnologies
Nanomaterials and Hybrids
Engineering of Materials and Nanostructures
Nanomaterials and Modelling
Functional Ceramics
Materials Interfaces

After achievement of the curriculum, students will graduate with a double Master degree in Materials Science awarded by the two Consortium universities where the students have studied and recognised in each partner country.

Who can apply?

Students and scholars both from European and non-European countries are welcome to apply for the Master program.

Students apply to follow the Master Course.

Teachers ("Scholars") apply to carry out teaching and research assignments and scholarly work in the institutions participating in the Master Course.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarship

Third-country students can apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarship (max 48.000 € for 2 years, awarded by the Master consortium). This request procedure is included in the FAME Master Application Form.

European students are also eligible for Erasmus Mundus scholarships as of 2010 (Up to 20.000 € for 2 years, provided the student spends 2 years in 2 countries different from his/her home university country.

Those who do not get this grant can apply for other grants such as Erasmus/Socrates. This action should be done separately from the FAME Erasmus Mundus application procedure.

Third-country scholars can apply for Erasmus Mundus scholarship (from 2400 € for a 2-week stay to 14.400 € for a 3-month stay). Please contact the FAME Master Project Manager for any general question and the local university partner for specific questions.

Admission criteria

The admission criteria are highly competitive. To be selected as a regular student, an applicant must have earned a Bachelor's degree in Science (Physics, Chemistry, Metallurgy, Materials Science, Electrochemistry) or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of high standing.

Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their Bachelor's degrees are awarded before they enroll the program in Sept/Oct.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their prior performance and professional promise, as evidenced by academic records and letters of reference from individuals familiar with their capabilities. In addition, they will have to explain their career goals and reasons for coming to Europe for education.

English Level: All the courses will be taught in English. Students from English speaking countries must provide an official letter from the university attesting English is the media of instruction. Students whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL* or IELTS** English examination prior to applying to the Master. For TOEFL, a min. of 550, 213 or 79 points respectively for paper-based, computer-based and Internet-based TOEFL test is required. Marks of at least 6 (of a total of 9) are required for IELTS test. GPA (Grade Point Average) must be of at least 75% of the scale maximum.
